  • The purpose of this study was to explore the elementary school teachers' perceptions about making a model of volcanic activity. Thirty elementary teachers participated in the study after they in which they conducted the experiment of "Making a Model of Volcanic activity". A questionnaire was used to investigate how the teachers understood the strengths and weaknesses of the experiment in terms of the goals of school science inquiry. The results showed that 50-60% of the teachers were able to conduct the experiment as guided in the textbook regardless of their career or area of concentration. The teachers perceived that the experiment of current textbook was safe and useful for students to develop their creativity. However, they pointed out three major weaknesses of the textbook experiment: First, the textbook experiment does not clearly present the main purpose of the activity. Second, it does not appropriately reflect the natural volcanic activity. Third, it is a merely simple craft activity. In addition, the teachers agreed that the main goals of school science inquiry are the application of scientific knowledge, development of inquiry skills and cultivation of student's curiosity. However, the teachers perceived that the experiment of current textbook did not meet these three goals. They suggest that the experiment reflect the nature of real volcanic activities.

  • This study investigated the effectiveness of the Developmentally Appropriate Instruction Model for Science(DAIM-S) on increasing scientific curiosity and problem solving in young children. Subjects were 60 5-year-old middle class children, randomly assigned to one of two groups: either the DAIM-S group or the direct instruction group. For 2 months, the children in both groups took part in 21 science activity sessions. Both before and after treatment, subjects were tested on curiosity and scientific problem solving. The DAIM-S group showed higher achievement than the direct instruction group in the acquisition of curiosity and scientific problem solving. From these results, the researchers suggest application of the DIAM-S to the science teaching of young children.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to help university professors for making their systematic design of instruction easily and scientifically. To increase of learner's studying ability, the systemic instructional design is imperative. But most of university professors could not get proper experiences to know develop instructional design system, specially to develop web-based system. This new system made it possible to select the proper instructional methods and the media type suitable for the corresponding data. And also every professor who is involved to know this system, can put informations for the target learners, learning contents and learning objectives, and present the proper media types and the many different conditions in the process of the each instructional design process. Finally, the results of the learner's study will be effective and professors showed their positive opinions for the using of the system.

  • An increasing number of educators emphasize the affective domain in learning. Affective and cognitive objectives interact and can not be separated from each other. Good emotions and feelings assist students achieving optimally in the cognitive domain. Emotional intelligence harmonizes well with an affective science curriculum. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of EQ(Emotional quotient) improvement program on students' EQ, science achievement, the science related attitudes, and science anxiety. A pretest-posttest control group design was employed. Subjects were 168 male and female first grade students in a middle school. A control group was instructed with a traditional teaching method, and an experimental group was instructed using EQ improvement program. Two groups were treated for 42 hours during 14 weeks. Two way ANCOVA and correlation analysis was performed using the SPSS. The results indicated that students who received EQ program got higher EQ and their science anxiety was lowered than students who were in a control group(p<.05). EQ program was not significantly effective on science attitude than the traditional instruction but, in the domain 'the enjoyment of science class' it was effective(p<.05). EQ program was significantly effective on students' achievement than the traditional instruction(p<.05).

  • The knowledge-information-processing competency is the most essential competency in a knowledge-information-based society and is the most fundamental competency in the new problem-solving ability. Data-driven science inquiry, which emphasizes how to find and solve problems using vast amounts of data and information, is a way to cultivate the problem-solving ability in a knowledge-information-based society. Therefore, this study aims to develop a teaching-learning model and strategy for data-driven science inquiry and to verify the validity of the model in terms of knowledge information processing competency. This study is developmental research. Based on literature, the initial model and strategy were developed, and the final model and teaching strategy were completed by securing external validity through on-site application and internal validity through expert advice. The development principle of the inquiry model is the literature study on science inquiry, data science, and a statistical problem-solving model based on resource-based learning theory, which is known to be effective for the knowledge-information-processing competency and critical thinking. This model is titled "Exploratory Scientific Data Analysis" The model consisted of selecting tools, collecting and analyzing data, finding problems and exploring problems. The teaching strategy is composed of seven principles necessary for each stage of the model, and is divided into instructional strategies and guidelines for environment composition. The development of the ESDA inquiry model and teaching strategy is not easy to generalize to the whole school level because the sample was not large, and research was qualitative. While this study has a limitation that a quantitative study over large number of students could not be carried out, it has significance that practical model and strategy was developed by approaching the knowledge-information-processing competency with respect of science inquiry.

  • Deeper understandings of school library-assisted instruction from teachers are required to develop students' self-directed learning skills which can improve their learning capabilities, problem solving techniques and learning attitudes. The objective of this study was to examine whether there is difference in subject teachers' perception of the necessity and effectiveness of the group type, class model, and collaborative class of class utilizing the school library and to apply and activate class utilizing the school library constructively in the field of education. For this purpose, this study inquired into the concept, necessity, type and process of class utilizing the school library, etc. and conducted a questionnaire survey of 278 subject teachers sampled from 30 high schools in 10 areas of Gyeonggido.

  • This study aims to apply a maker education program in an online class for a unit in elementary science entitled "Life of a Plant." Furthermore, it aims to investigate the effect of the program on the interest of students in science and creative problem-solving. The theme of the proposed maker education program is "Making a fairy tale audio book with the theme: the life cycle of a plant." The program consists of activities intended to produce creative audiobooks using concepts learned from the TMI maker education model stage. The result points to the positive effect of maker education on the interest of elementary school students in science and creative problem-solving. Therefore, applying the maker education program to online classes for elementary science is effective in improving the interest of students. In addition, further research is required to effectively apply the maker education program to online classes in science.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the educational context variables on students' science achievement and interest in TIMSS 2015. TIMSS 2015 science data and questionnaire results were used to fit the Hierarchical Linear Model (HLM) in this study. According to the results, books at home, parents' level of education, and students' views on science lessons have significant influence on science achievement of above-high level 4th-grade students, and books at home on below-intermediate level 4th-grade students. Books at home, students' views on science lessons, and school composition by student economic background have significant influence on science achievement of above-high level 8th-grade students, and books at home and students' views on science lessons on science achievement of below-Intermediate level 8th-grade students. In all grade levels, books at home, and students' views on science lessons have significant influence on science achievement and interest. Discussed in the conclusion are ways to improve science teaching and learning including offering systematic reading programs for all students, reinforcement of student-participation in science classes, connecting science hands-on activities with science concepts for below-Intermediate level elementary students, and so on.

  • The purposes of this study were to develop teaching strategy enhancing creative problem solving skills and to examine the instructional influences on studints' creative thinking skills, critical thinking skills, creative personality and academic self-regulation. In this study, a model using inter-disciplinary analogies(PDCA model) was designed and applied to the existing 'Teaching model for the enhancement of the creative problem solving skills'. And it was implemented to preservice science teachers for the one semester. Results indicated that the experimental group presented statistically meaningful improvement in creative thinking skills, especially in the originality of identifying a problem, making hypothesis, and controlling variables (p<.05). In addition, the strategy contributed to improving critical thinking skills, especially in inquiry process of recognizing problems, making hypothesis, interpreting and transforming of data (p<.05). This strategy also helped students' academic self-regulation (p<.05). But there was no significant improvement in creative personality(p<.05).
