  • The conventional reliability based design optimization(RBDO) methods require high computational cost compared with the deterministic design optimization(DO) methods. To overcome the computational inefficiency of RBDO, single loop methods have been proposed. These need less function calls than that of RBDO but much more than that of DO. In this study, the approximate reliability method is proposed that the computational requirement is nearly the same as DO and the reliability accuracy is good compared with that of RBDO. Using this method, the 3-D viscous aerodynamic shape design optimization with uncertainty is performed very efficiently.

  • Characteristics of vertical and horizontal axis wind turbines are explained. The speed and direction of wind on the blade of the Darrieus type turbine changes very severely. Therefore dynamic stall happens periodically and the wake from the front blade deteriorates the performance of rear blades. Blade element momentum theory(BEMT) is widely utilized for aerodynamic design and performace prediction of horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT). Computation analysis and wind tunnel test are also performed for the performance prediction.

  • A multi-level design optimization framework for aerodynamic design of rotary wing such as propeller and helicopter rotor blades is presented in this study. Strategy of the proposed framework is to enhance aerodynamic performance by sequentially applying the planform and sectional design optimization. In the first level of a planform design, we used a genetic algorithm and blade element momentum theory (BEMT) based on two-dimensional aerodynamic database to find optimal planform variables. After an initial planform design, local flow conditions of blade sections are analyzed using high-fidelity CFD methods. During the next level, a sectional design optimization is conducted using two dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis and a gradient based optimization algorithm. When optimal airfoil shape is determined at the several spanwise locations, a planform design is performed again. Through this iterative design process, not only an optimal flow condition but also an optimal shape of an EAV propeller blade is obtained. To validate the optimized propeller-blade design, it is tested in wind-tunnel facility with different flow conditions. An efficiency, which is slightly less than the expected improvement of 7% predicted by our proposed design framework but is still satisfactory to enhance the aerodynamic performance of EAV system.

  • The low speed aerodynamic characteristics of modified sonic arc airfoil which is developed to fit the transonic regime are investigated. This airfoil is designed by using the shape function of sonic arc proposed by Schwendenman, the data of NACA0012, and commercial program Maple. In order to investigate the low speed aerodynamic characteristic of sonic arc airfoil, the numerical analysis is conducted below Mach number 0.3 and the results are compared and analyzed with it of NACA0012 airfoil. At each Mach number, the drag of modified sonic arc airfoil is less 1.5% than NACA0012's drag and the lift of modified sonic arc airfoil is less 2% than NACA0012's lift. The moment coefficient of modified sonic arc airfoil is also less 1.4% than it of NACA0012 at each Mach number.

  • This study aims to analyze the aerodynamics when the geometry of the turbine rotor is modified. The turbine used in this study is a small engine used in the APU of a helicopter. It is difficult to improve the performance of small engines owing to the structural weakness of the blade tip. Therefore, the improvement of the hub geometry is investigated in many ways. The working fluid of a turbine is a high-temperature and high-pressure gas. The heat transfer rate of the turbine surface should be considered to avoid the destruction of blade owing to the heat load. The SST turbulence model gives an excellent prediction of the aerodynamic behavior and heat transfer characteristics when the numerical simulations are compared with the experimental results. In conclusion, the aerodynamic efficiency is improved when a bulbous design is applied to the leading edge near the hub. The endwall loss is reduced by 15%.

  • Course correction munition is a smart projectile which improves its accuracy by the control mechanism equipped in the fuze section with canard. In this paper, various aerodynamic configurations of the fuze section were analysed by utilizing a semi-empirical method and a CFD method. A final canard configuration showing the least drag was then determined. During the CFD simulation, it was found that the k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model combined with O-type grid base is suitable for the prediction of the base drag. Finally, the aerodynamic characteristics of the smart munition and the change of drag due to the canard installation were analysed.

  • Optimal aerodynamic design for the pitch-controlled horizontal axis wind turbine and its aerodynamic performance for various pitch angles are performed numerically by using the blade element momentum theory. The numerical calculation includes effects such as Prandtl‘s tip loss, airfoil distribution, and wake rotation. Six different airfoils are distributed along the blade span, and the special airfoil i.e. airfoil of 40% thickness ratio is adopted at the hub side to have structural integrity. The nonlinear chord obtained from the optimal design procedure is linearized to decrease the weight and to increase the productivity with very little change of the aerodynamic performance. From the comparisons of the power, thrust, and torque coefficients with corresponding values of different pitch angles, the aerodynamic performance shows delicate changes for just $3^{\circ}$ increase or decrease of the pitch angle. For precisive pitch control, it requires the pitch control algorithm and its drive mechanism below $3^{\circ}$ increment of pitch angle. The maximum torque is generated when the speed ratio is smaller than the designed one.

  • A general program of three dimensional profile design of impellers for centrifugal/fixed-flow compressors is successfully commercialized using Bezier curves and quasi-3D flow analysis methods. Control points for meridional hub and shroud contours and blade camberline angles are arbitrarily changed to give smooth Bezier curves. With specified blade normal thicknesses, contructed geometry is instantly analyzed using flow analysis methods to be checked.
