  • Optimal design and proper operation are important to get aimed output power of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. An air cooling fuel cell stack is widely used in sub kW PEMFC systems. The purpose of this study is to analyze operating conditions affecting the performance of the air cooling PEMFC which is designed for portable application. In portable applications, air cooling stack is difficult to maintain well balanced operating conditions. The importart parameters are the relative humidity, the temperature of the stack, the utilization of reactant gas and so on. in this study, a 500W air cooling PEMFC was fabricated and tested to evaluate the design performance and to determine optimal operating conditions. Moreover, basic modeling also is carried out. These results can be used 3s design criteria and optimal operating conditions for portable PEMFCs

  • A conceptual study of an air-cooled heat exchanger is conducted to achieve the long-term passive cooling of an integral reactor. A newly designed air-cooled heat exchanger is introduced in the present study and preliminary thermal sizing is demonstrated. This study mainly focuses on feasibility of an innovative air-cooled heat exchanger to extend the cooling period of the passive residual heat removal system(PRHRS) only in passive manners. A vertical shell-and-tube air-cooled heat exchanger is installed at the top of the emergency cooldown tank(ECT) to collect evaporated steam into condensate, which enables water inventory of the ECT to be kept. Finally, thermal sizing of an air-cooled heat exchanger is presented. The length and the number of tubes required, and also the height of a stack are calculated to remove the designated heat duty. The present study will contribute to an enhancement of the passive safety system of an integral reactor.

고속 CNC선반용 공랭식 오일 냉각기 개발 (Development of a Oil-Cooler for High-Speed CNC Lathe)

  • Recently, CNC lathe is in need of higher speed for precision works. So more intensive and compact heat exchanger is necessary to cool down the heat in short time from drills and works during high speed working. In this study, to increase heat transfer coefficient per unit volume, inner groove tube is designed and compact oil cooler, 57% volume of conventional type, is manufactured. The heat transfer performance is experimented and is compared with the performance of conventional type.

  • 본 논문에서는 고출력 LED 투광등의 방열 기술 동향을 살펴본다. 이를 위해 LED 방열에 사용되는 대표적 기술로서 LED 패키지 방열 기술, 공랭식 방열 기술, 수냉식 방열 기술, 열전 소자 방열 기술에 대한 기술적 특징을 분석하고 각각의 국내외 관련 기술 개발 현황을 제시한다.

공기 유로 형상에 따른 공랭식 전기자동차 배터리 시스템의 냉각 성능 예측 (Predictions of the Cooling Performance on an Air-Cooled EV Battery System According to the Air Flow Passage Shape)

  • 본 논문은 전기자동차 배터리 시스템에 공기를 이용한 직접 냉각 방식을 적용하여, 공기 유로 형상에 따른 냉각 성능을 비교 연구하였다. 이를 위해, 배터리 냉각 시스템에서 모듈의 배치 형상과 발열량을 고정하고, 입 출구 면적 및 외부 Case 형상을 변경하여, 이에 따른 냉각 성능 결과를 수치 해석적으로 비교 분석하였다. 해석 결과는 배터리 내부의 공기 유동 유선(Stream line), 속도장 분포(Velocity field), 온도 분포(Temperature distributions)를 정리하여 제시하였다. 해석 결과, 외기온도 $25^{\circ}C$에서 안정적인 배터리 작동온도인 $50^{\circ}C$ 이하를 만족하기 위해서는 공기의 유입 체적이 $400m^3/h$ 이상이 되어야 함을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 출구 부근의 Diffuser 형상을 가지는 해석 조건에서 냉각이 끝난 공기의 배출이 원활히 진행되면서 냉각 성능이 향상되는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • Experimental study on a cross-flow air-cooled plate heat exchanger (PHE) was performed. Two types of PHEs were manufactured either with single-wave plates or with double-wave plates in parallel. Cooling air flows through the PHEs in a crosswise direction against internal hot water. The heat exchanger aims to substitute open-loop cooling towers with closed-loop water circulation, which guarantees cleanliness and compactness. In this study, prototype single-wave and double-wave PHEs were designed and tested in a laboratory scale experiments. From the tests, the double-wave PHE shows approximately 50% enhanced heat transfer performance compared to the single-wave PHE. However, the double-wave PHE costs 30% additional pressure drop. For the commercialization, a wide channel design for air flow would be essential for performance and reliability.

  • The air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) stacks, which is widely used in small-sized PEMFC, have a problem in that durability is weaker than that of the water-cooled type. Because the cathode is open to the atmosphere and the structural problem of the air-cooled stack, which is difficult to maintain airtightness, is highly likely to form a hydrogen/air boundary during start-up/shut-down (SU/SD). Through the accelerated durability evaluation of the 20 W air-cooled PEMFC stack, the purpose of this study was to find out the cause of the degradation of the stack and to contribute to the improvement of the durability of the air-cooled PEMFC stack. In this study, it was possible to evaluate durability in a relatively short time by reducing 20-30% of initial performance by repeating SU/SD 1,000 to 1,200 times on an air-cooled PEMFC stack. After disassembling the stack, each cell was divided into two and the performance analysis showed that the electrode degradation was more severe in the anode outlet membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which facilitates air inflow as a whole, than in the inlet MEA. It was shown that the cathode Pt was dissolved/precipitated to deteriorate the polymer ionomer inside the membrane.

  • Proper cooling of PEM fuel cell stack is essential for the high-performance operation of fuel cell system. Insufficient cooling of the stack can cause significant damage to components due to overheating and also can decrease cell performance by dehydration of the polymer electrolyte. In the present study, we performed a computational analysis to assess the condition of the cooling system to secure the proper temperature in fuel cell stack system for high altitude long endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
