  • Large eddy simulation is used to investigate the compressible flow over a open cavity, The sub-grid scale stresses are modeled using the dynamic model. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the sixth order accurate compact finite difference scheme in the space and the 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme in the time. The results show a typical flow pattern of the shear layer mode of oscillation over the cavity. The votical disturbances, the roll-up of vorticity, and impingement and scattering of vorticity at the downstream cavity edge can be seen in the shear layer. Predicted acoustic resonant frequency is in good agreement with that of the empirical formula. The mean flow streamlines are nearly horizontal along the mouth of the cavity. The pressure has its minimum value in the vortex core inside the cavity.

  • A 2 stage 6-pole bandpass filter (BPF) is designed and implemented by using K-band triple-mode cavity. The BPF has an 100MHz bandwidth at the center frequency of 18.5GHz and the response of the filter is Chebyshev function. The cavity filter uses two orthogonal $TE_{113}$ modes and one $TM_{012}$ mode. To obtain a Chebyshev response, the intercavity coupling between the adjacent cavities is accomplished by H-field component of TE modes parallel to slot plate. In this paper, the size and location of intercavity slot are determined by the detailed coupling equation from H-field of TE resonant modes in circular cavity. The measured results agree well with the theoretical one.

  • This paper is the first step to study on the acoustic characteristics of the Haegeum, a Korean traditional bowed-string instrument. We measured acoustic transfer functions of a Haegeum body using impulse response method. All the measurements are performed in anechoic chamber, INMC, SNU. We examined resonant characteristics of the Haegeum body with obtained transfer functions. Then we performed additional studies which are the Chladni pattern experiments and calculations of air cavity resonances to verify relations between the resonant peaks on the transfer functions and the resonances of each component, such as top plate, air cavity and so on. As a result, we can explain the acoustic characteristics of a Haegeum body and its components.

  • The activity of the seismic wave propagation around the cavity is investigated for the exact inversion of the crosshole tomography data, in order to understand the possibility of the existence inside the underground cavity. It is found that the adequate frequency range for the tunnel investigation is about 2 kHz to 5 kHz, and the grid space should be set up to 1/10 of the wavelength. The propagation of the seismic wave near the cavity may go through or detour the cavity according to the seismic velocity inside the cavity. The detouring wave propagates with the seismic velocity of mother rock in spite of the velocity of inside of the cavity. The smaller the velocity difference is between the mother rock and cavity, the more frequent penetration of the seismic wave through the cavity appears.

  • The leakage of water under sewer pipelines is one of main sources of sinkholes in urban areas. We performed laboratory model tests to investigate the presence of cavities using impact-echo method, which is a nondestructive test method. To simulate a concrete sewer pipe, a thin concrete plate was built and placed over container filled with sand. The cavity was modeled as an extruded polystyrene foam box. Two sets of tests were performed, one over sand and the other on cavity. A new impact device was developed to apply a consistent high frequency impact load on the concrete plate, thereby increasing the reliability of the test procedure. The frequency and transient characteristics of the measured reflected waveforms were analyzed via fast Fourier transform and short time Fourier spectrum. It was shown that the shapes of Fourier spectra are very similar to one another, and therefore cannot be used to predict the presence of cavity. A new index, termed resonance duration, is defined to record the time of vibration exceeding a prescribed intensity. The results showed that the resonance duration is a more effective parameter for predicting the presence of a cavity. A value of the resonance period was proposed to estimate the presence of cavity. Further studies using various soil types and field tests are warranted to validate the proposed approach.

  • Shotcrete is one of the main support materials in tunnelling. Its bonding state on excavated rock surfaces controls the safety of the tunnel: De-bonding of shotcrete from an excavated surface decreases the safety of the tunnel. Meanwhile, the bonding state of shotcrete is affected by blasting during excavation at tunnel face as well as bench cut. Generally, the bonding state of shotcrete can be classified as void, de-bonded, or fully bonded. In this study, the state of the back-surface of shotcrete is investigated using impact-echo (IE) techniques. Numerical simulation of IE technique is performed with ABAQUS. Signals obtained from the IE simulations were analyzed at time, frequency, and time-frequency domains, respectively. Using an integrated active signal processing technique coupled with a Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) analysis, the bonding state of the shotcrete can be evaluated accurately. As the bonding state worsens, the amplitude of the first peak past the maximum amplitude in the time domain waveform and the maximum energy of the autospectral density are increasing. The resonance frequency becomes detectable and calculable and the contour in time-frequency domain has a long tail parallel to the time axis. Signal characteristics with respect to ground condition were obtained in case of fully bonded condition. As the ground condition worsens, the length of a long tail parallel to the time axis is lengthened and the contour is located in low frequency range under 10 kHz.

  • Radar method can be effective in probing concrete structures damaged by earthquake. Data analysis is usually performed in time domain, by considering time delay of the wave due to the dielectric constant of concrete. In this study, improved data analysis has been performed using signal processing scheme of spectra analysis and filtering. Three antenna with 900MHz, 1㎓, and 1.5㎓ center frequency were used to detect a steel bar or delamination in specimens for obtaining data, Frequency spectrum was filtered in low pass, high pass, and band pass varying cutoff frequency with 1/3 octave in frequency domain. The most effective cutoff frequency for each frequency has been determined as the range for 2 octave lower to 1 octave higher and 2 octave lower to 1 octave lower. This result provided a basis in improving data analysis capability using frequency domain filtering.
