  • The effects of barley tea concentration and atomizing air pressure on the size, homogeneity and distribution of the sprayed droplets were investigated. An equation relating mean diameter (${\overline{D}}$) with the concentration where the coefficient a and b were determined empirically. As the operating air pressure was increased, the mean diameter of the droplets decreased and finally reached the limiting mean diameter, $36{\mu}m$ at 15.7% barley tea concentration. The homogeneity of the droplets increased with the operating air pressure, increase and it was decreased steadily as the soluble solid concentration increased up to 20% and markedly over 20% at every operating air pressure. The distribution ($P_D$) of sprayed droplets related with the droplet size as the following exponential equation; $P_D$ = e 1nD + f where e and f are empirical constants.

  • This study was performed to investigate the formation and mass production of resting eggs by freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus as influenced by different aeration supplements and exchange intervals of culture water in 15-L culture vessels and 500 L culture tanks. The maximum densities and mixis rates of the rotifers were not different between experimental group exposed to air or oxygen supplements. However, the fertilization rate and formation of resting eggs of the rotifers in the air-supplemented group were significantly higher than those in the oxygen supplemented group. In the experiment concerning exchange interval of culture water, the maximum density of the rotifers and formation of resting eggs in the batch culture were significantly higher than those in the semi-continuous culture with exchange of water every day. The formation of resting eggs per Chlorella dry weight was highest in the semi-continuous culture with exchange of water every day. The resting eggs of rotifers were produced at a density of $51.8{\sim}57.9{\times}10^6$ eggs in 500-L culture tanks. In this study, the batch culture with air is an effective method for mass production of resting eggs by the freshwater rotifer, B. calyciflorus, and the efficiency of mass production of resting eggs by this rotifer was similar to that of the seawater rotifers, B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis.

  • The group effect of inclined ground anchor should be considered in design, but it has been hardly studied due to the difficulties of experimental or theoretical study. In this study, the model tests for the inclined ground anchors are made, and the displacements and strain fields of ground around anchor surface are analysed. As the results of this study, the group effect of the inclined ground anchor in air dried sand ground does not show even though two anchor surfaces are very close(10.7cm, surface to surface). That is to say, ,in the case that the final failure surface by pullout of anchor shows on the anchor surface, the pullout resistances of single anchors are almost same as those of the group anchors in these model tests.

  • In this work, chemical-solution derived silicate fibers were prepared by mixing tetraethyl orthosilicate, ethanol, distilled water, and hydrochloric acid in order to investigate surface roughness of fiber. Silicate fibers were drawn by using a viscous solution after evaporation at $80^{\circ}C$. The dried gel fibers were finally annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$, $1100^{\circ}C$, $1200^{\circ}C$ and $^1300{\circ}C$ for 60 min in dried air (flow rate = ∼200 ml/min). The crystallinity of the heat-treated silica fiber was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction $\theta$-2$\theta$ scan. A field emission-scanning electron microscope and an atomic force microscope were used to evaluate surface properties. The silicate fiber annealed at $1300^{\circ}C$ showed high value of root mean square roughness and had a relatively inhomogeneous surface structure.

  • The objective of this paper is to obtain the basic data in order to develop an eco-friendly concrete through evaluation on the properties of polymer cement mortar and concrete using PVAc (Polyvinyl Acetate), as a kind of water-soluble polymer. For this purpose, the physical properties of cement mortar and concrete which does not contain the PVAc as the control batch were compared and analyzed with those using the PVAc. And then, the replacement amount of the PVAc was 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% by binder, respectively. And also, the properties of concrete using the PVAc were evaluated, by adding an antifoaming agent in order to control the air contents increasing with an increase of amount of polymer usage. As a result, in the case of polymer cement mortar using the PVAc, it presented that the compressive strength reduced, while the performance of flexural strength and drying shrinkage increased. When the replacement of the PVAc was 6% within concrete, the compressive, tensile, flexural strength and elastic modulus were increased.

  • High performance concrete is prone to large autogenous shrinkage due to its low water to binder ratio (W/B). The autogenous shrinkage of concrete is caused by self-desiccation as a result of water consumption by the hydration of cement. In this study, the autogenous shrinkage of high performance concrete with and without fly ash was Investigated. The properties of fresh concrete, slump loss, air content, and flowability as well as the mechanical properties, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, were also measured. Test results was shown that the autogenous shrinkage of concrete increased as the W/B decreased. For the same W/B, the autogenous shrinkage of high strength concrete with fly ash was considerably reduced although the development of its compressive strength was delayed at early ages. Furthermore, the autogenous shrinkage and compressive strength of high strength concrete were more rapidly developed than those of normal strength concrete. It was concluded that fly ash could improve the quality of high strength concrete with respect to the workability and autogenous shrinkage.

  • Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb.et Zucc.) boards of 30 mm thickness were treated by steaming and four different drying methods. Small specimens were taken from the sapwoods of the treated boards and their longitudinal liquid permeability was measured according to Darcy's law. The specimens were also extracted with alcohol and aceton solutions to examine the mechanism of liquid flow in wood. It was observed that specific permeability drastically decreases with measurement time, resulting in violation of Darcy's law. It may be due to that air bubbles formed under vacuum block flow paths in resin canals. The average specific permeabilities of non-extracted and extracted specimens are different from one treatment to another. It is supposed that the properties of residual resin in resin canals change depending on the conditions of treatments. Anatomical examination was conducted with a scanning electron microscope.

  • A total of 7039 strains of filamentous fungi are preserved in Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC). The 4065 strains (58%) of them, which produce many spores in cultivation on proper media, are preserved with freeze-drying method. They are also preserved with liquid nitrogen and deep-freezer storage in order to minimize loss by death. Aspergillus, Penicillium, Lichtheimia, Mucor, Rhizopus, etc. which are common in surrounding environments, are included in this category. The others which do not produce spores, or produce few spores in vitro, are preserved with liquid nitrogen, deep-freezer and mineral oil storage. Phytophthora, Pythium, Cercospora, Septoria, Rhizoctonia, etc. are included in this category. The authors also introduced various fungal preservation methods and provided detailed preservation procedures that are used in KACC.

  • As a promising method to address global water scarcity, sorbent-assisted water harvesting from air has shown great potential to deliver drinking water for inlands lacking traditional water sources. In this article, the recent studies of using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents to harvest atmospheric water will be introduced. Compared to the other sorbent materials such as zeolites or silica-based materials, MOFs have shown prospective properties such as the water isotherm inflection points as low as ~10%, which are suitable for harvesting water at dry regions. Due to this property, recently, MOFs have been extensively adopted to develop practical water harvesting devices that can harvest water. Since atmospheric water is accessible anywhere and anytime in the world, this technology is expected to open a new avenue in terms of securing safe water for the future.
