  • In order to evaluate groundwater movement and the infiltration of contaminants, such as petroleum products, the determination of porosity and effective porosity is very important. Porosity and effective porosity are important physical parameters that determine the transfer and movement of water and solutes in porous media. Various methods of determining these parameters have been developed, with varying degrees of accuracy and applicability. Most of the existing methods produce static results. They do not produce instantaneous and real time of porosity and effective porosity in a porous media. In this study, we used a new permittivity method called Frequency Domain Reflectometry with Vector analyzer (FDR-V) to determine the porosity and effective porosity of some sand samples in the laboratory. The advantage of the FDR-V method is that it instantaneously determines the temporal variation of dielectric constants of porous media. Then, the porosity and the effective porosity of porous media are computed using well established empirical equations. Results obtained from the FDR-V method compared favorably with results from other permittivity methods such as gravimetric, injection and replacement tests. The ratio of effective porosity to porosity was 85 - 92 %, when FDR-V was used. This value compared favourably with 90 %, which has been usually quoted in previous studies. Considering the convenience and its applicability, the EDR-V permittivity holds a great potential in porous media and contaminant transport studies.

  • This study presents the numerical results of soil-water characteristic curve for sandy soil by pore network model. The Jumunjin sand is subjected to the high resolution 3D X-ray computed tomographic imaging and its pore structure is constructed by the web of pore body and pore channel. The channel radius, essential to the computation of capillary pressure, is obtained based on the skeletonization and Euclidean Distance transform. The experimentally obtained soil-water characteristic curve corroborates the numerically estimated one. The pore channel radius defined by minimum radii of pore throat results in the slightly overestimation of air entry value, while the overall evolution of capillary pressure resides in the acceptable range. The relative permeability computed by a series of suggested models runs above that obtained by pore network model at high degree of saturation.

  • In order to estimate the uranium flux from seawater to sediments, we took pore water samples and deployed benthic chambers on seafloor of Chonsu Bay, Korea. The uranium flux across the sediment-water interface was estimated from the pore water to be 0.112-0.566 mg/$m^2yr$, corresponding to a removal flux of $4.3-21.5{\times}10^7$ gU/yr for the entire Yellow Sea. Nutrient fluxes from sediment to bottom water were estimated to be 135.6 mmol/$m^2yr$ for ammonia, 228.2 mmol/$m^2yr$ for nitrate, 36.8 mmol/$m^2yr$ for phosphate and 23.9 mmol/$m^2yr$ for silicate. The redox boundary, based on the distribution of pore water nitrate and solid phase manganese, was located at 3-5 cm below the sediment surface. Phosphate flux obtained by benthic chambers was 28.S mmol/$m^2yr$. On the other hand, estimates of uranium and silicate fluxes were orders of magnitude greater than those based on pore water profiles. Flux estimates on the basis of pore water concentration is believed to have greater reliability than those obtained from benthic chamber data.

  • This paper presents a comprehensive laboratory study that examines the effects of porosity, water content, density and grain size distribution on the thermal conductivity of soils which were sampled from 16 synoptic stations of Korea. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that porosity and water content are important parameters which strongly affect the thermal conductivity of soils. Soils with lower porosities and higher water contents have higher thermal conductivities. On the contrary, increase of the matrix density slightly increases the thermal conductivity, and grain size distribution hardly affects the thermal conductivity. Dry soils with the same porosity tend to have more scattered values of thermal conductivity than wet soils. Based on the experimental results, a multiple linear regression model and a nonlinear regression model, having two regression variables of porosity and water content, were presented to predict thermal conductivity. Both models show a high accuracy of prediction with $R^2$ values of 0.74 and 0.82, respectively. Thus, it is expected that the suggested empirical models can be used for predicting thermal conductivity of soils by measuring porosity and water content.

  • It is necessary to measure the direct current with a non-contact methodology for the liquid or gas phase, as welt as the conducting metals. This paper described a theoretical consideration and experimental verification for a non-contact quantitative direct current measurement system using the Faraday effect and magnetic flux leakage. The leakage of magnetic flux occurs around a gap when a ferromagnetic core including the discontinuous gap is magnetized. Two large anisotropic domains in a magneto-optical film are occurred by the vertical component of leaked magnetic flux and the domain walls are paralleled to the center of the gap. Here, the symmetrical arrangement of domains are deflected when a vertical magnetic field is applied to the magneto-optical film. The domain wall of the magneto-optical film are relocated when a measuring current passes through the ferromagnetic core. Therefore, a direct current passing through the core can be determined quantitatively by the measurement of moving distance of the domain wall.

  • This study was carried out to examine the forest fire effect on water storage characteristics in the forests. Water storage capacity of the burned area was analyzed by several major factors, such as soil pore, maximum water content, effective water storage, and percolation rate. The results obtained from the analysis of major factors are as follows; The deeper soil depth, the less total pore, coarse pore, effective water storage, and percolation rate. However, fine pore increased slightly in both burned area and control plot. As compared with control plot, burned area showed lower percolation rate, coarse pore, and effective water storage, but higher values of fine pore. Directly after forest fire, the soil pore is little affected. But as the time passes, top soil structure changes and soil pore also is affected even in a deep soil. Estimated effective water storage was lower at top soil of Namcheon and at deep soil of Namha in all the burned areas, but slowly decreased in deep soil compared to control plots. Therefore it was concluded that forest water storage capacity was greatly affected by the forest fire.
