  • Recently, the use of crushed sand produced by the crushing of stone is continuously increasing to reach an utilization rate of about 20% of the whole fine aggregates that is foreseen to grow larger in the future. However, the lack of recognition concerning quality during the production of crushed sand results in the use of crushed sand that do not satisfy the KS F 2527 standard during the manufacture of concrete. And, studies investigating the effects of such crushed sand on concrete are still neglected. Therefore, this study intends to provide data that can be exploited for concrete using crushed sand through the analysis of the effects of the grain shape of crushed sand on the quality of concrete. Results revealed problems in the workability, air entraining and durability for a value of 53% for the solid volume percentage for shape determination specified by the current KS F 2527. Analysis showed that the adjustment of the solid volume percentage for shape determination from the currently specified 53% to 55% will improve the quality of concrete using crushed sand in high strength concrete particularly.

  • This paper presents mechanical properties and chloride diffusivity of the recycled aggregate concretes(RAC) in which natural coarse aggregate was replaced by recycled coarse aggregate(RCA) by compressive strength levels(20, 35, 50 MPa). A total of 9 RAC were produced and classified into three series, each of which included three mixes designed with three compressive strength levels of 20 MPa, 35 MPa and 50 MPa and three RCA replacement ratios of 0, 50 and 100%. Engineering properties of RAC were tested for slump test, air content, compressive strength, chloride penetration depth and chloride diffusion coefficient. The test results indicated that the workability of RAC could be improved or same by RCA replacement ratios, when compared with that containing no RCA. This is probably because of the RCA shape improving the workability of RAC. Also, the test results showed that the compressive strength was decreased by 9~10% as the RCA replacement ratios increase. Furthermore, the result indicated that the measured chloride diffusion coefficient increases by 144% with the increase of the RCA replacement. In the case of the concrete having low level compressive strength, the increase of chloride diffusion coefficient tends to be higher when using the RCA. However, the trend of chloride diffusion coefficient in high level compressive strength concrete is similar to that obtained in general concrete. This is because that the effect of the RCA replacement could be a decrease with increase of compressive strength. Therefore, an advance on the admixture application and mix ratio control are required to improve the chloride resistivity when using the recycled aggregate in large scale.

  • Lightweight aggregate for concrete was manufactured from recycling the waste PET bottles (PET Bottle Lightweight Aggregate, LAPET). The qualities of LAPET and its mortar were investigated. Specific gravity and unit weight of LAPET was very low in comparison with river sand like as 1.39, 844 kg/㎥ respectively. In addition, compressive strength of concrete significantly decreased because of specific gravity of aggregate decreased with increases in containing ratio. When LAPET was contained to 25% and 50% of river sand, compressive strength of concrete at 28 days was indicated more 30MPa. Most of LAPET was generally showed to round shape and fluidity of mortar increased significantly due to sleeking the surface texture of LAPET. On the other hand, capillary absorption of mortar with LAPET was greatly increased in comparison with that of mortar without LAPET because of LAPET was composed of singular gradation. Absorption of LAPET was 0% because the interior structure of LAPET consists of PET like as organic high polymer. Therefore the fault of normal lightweight aggregate, absorption, will be improved. It could expect several advantages that the pollution of environment will be previously prevent and the waste resources could be recycled if LAPET is reused as aggregate for Lightweight concrete.

  • Recently, porous concrete has been used for the purpose of decreasing the load of earth environment. It consists solely of cement, water and uniform-sized coarse aggregate. And its fundamental properties will be considerably affected by the physical properties of aggregate because the aggregate occupies for the most part in its mix proportion. For such a reason, this study was carried out to investigate the influence of the sizes and kinds of aggregate for the fundamental properties of porous concrete. It showed that the fundamental properties of porous concrete were the similar value in all sizes of aggregate except in the case of using the 2.5∼5㎜ aggregate and were varied according to the kinds of aggregate. In particular, compressive strength of porous concrete using 2.5∼5㎜ aggregate was more higher than that using other aggregate, and its void ratio and coefficient of permeability was lower. And the maintenance capacity of permeability of porous concrete was varied by the sizes and the kinds of aggregate. In particular, it was greatly decreased in case of using the 2.5∼5㎜ aggregate. And unlike dynamic modulus of elasticity of ordinary concrete, that of porous concrete was very high value in early ages and was slowly increased after that time.

  • Recently, with the increase in the number of high rise and huge scaled buildings, ultra-high strength concrete with 80~100 MPa has been used increasingly to withstand excessive loads. Among the components of concrete, the effects of the kinds and properties of fine aggregates on the performance and economic advantages of ultra-high strength concrete need to be evaluated carefully. Therefore, this study examined the effects of the type of fine aggregates and mixing methods on the engineering properties of ultra-high strength concrete by varying the fine aggregates including limestone fine aggregate (LFA), electrical arc slag fine aggregate (EFA), washed sea sand (SFA), and granite fine aggregate (GFA) and their mixtures. Ultra-high strength concrete was fabricated with a 20 % water to binder ratio (W/B) and incorporated with 70 % of Ordinary Portland cement: 20 % of fly ash:10 % silica fume. The test results indicate that for a given superplasticizer dose, the use of LFA resulted in increases in slump flow and L-flow compared to the mixtures using other aggregates due to the improved particle shape and grading of LFA. In addition, the use of LFA and EFA led to enhanced compressive strength and a decrease in autogenous shrinkage due to the improved elastic properties of LFA and the presence of free-CaO in EFA, which resulted in the formation of C-S-H.

  • The purpose of this study is to present basic data for developing concrete with EMP shielding as the structure materials when constructing an EMP shielded building structure. In order to use metal-based recycled aggregates with excellent conductivity and easy procurement for EMP shielding concrete, an evaluation of the stability evaluation and EMP shielding performance was performed. Through the stability evaluation, it was found that the coarse aggregate stability criterion was satisfied, but the oxidized slag did not satisfy the fine aggregate stability criterion, the oxidized slag is not satisfied. In addition, as a result of fresh concrete, the workability is increased and the air volume is decreased. The compressive strength is increased due to the high density and coarse granularity of the recycled aggregates, which increased the cement paste and adhesion, thereby increasing the compressive strength. The results of an EMP shielding test show that aggregates with high shielding performance are electronic arc furnace(EAF) Oxidizing Slag and Cooper Slag. The shielding performance is expected to increase if the average particle size of aggregate is small or uniformly distributed.

  • This paper was evaluated the rheology properties according to each step of paste, mortar and HPFRCC as a part of the basic study to development of sprayed high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCC) for protection and blast resistant. Rheology test results in step of paste, in case of GGBFs and FA, it showed that the plastic viscosity and yield stress reduced gradually according to the increase of mixing rate, and in case of SF, the plastic viscosity and yield stress increased radically starting from the mixing rate of 10%. Rheology test results in step of mortar, type of aggregates, it showed that particle shape and grading of aggregate is influence on plastic viscosity and yield stress, and change of volume ratio is influence on plastic viscosity than yield stress. Fluidity and rheology test results in step of HPFRCC, if after a fiber mixed, it showed that viscosity agent is more effective to improve the fluidity and fiber dispersion than superplasticizer.

  • The exposed aggregate PCC(EAP) pavements have been successfully used in Europe and Japan as low-noise pavements. Coarse aggregate are exposed on the pavement surface texture of EAP by removing mortar of surface. The pavement surface texture should maintain not only low-noise characteristic but also adequate skid resistance level during the performance period. Skid resistance decreased with wearing and polishing of tire and pavement surface due to the repetition of tire-pavement contact. Since the tires mainly contact the exposed coarse aggregate, the shape and rock type of coarse aggregate significantly influence wearing and polishing of EAP pavements. The test for resistance to abrasion coarse aggregate by use of the Los Angeles machine(KS F 2508) and the method of test for resistance to abrasion coarse aggregate by use of the Accelerated Polishing Machine(ASTM D 3319-90) are generally used to evaluate polishing characteristics of aggregate. In this study, polishing of coarse aggregate of different five rock types were evaluated by KS F 2508(LA abrasion test) and ASTM D 3319-90(PSV method). The results of LA abrasion test and PSV method were contrary to each other. Since LA abrasion test is estimated the quantity of abrasion by the impact of aggregate, it may not be adequate to evaluate the polishing of aggregate by the repetition of tire. In the case of PSV method, the resistance of polishing is estimated the skid resistance variation of polished aggregate after repetition of tire. The PSV method is adequate for the evaluation on polishing of coarse aggregate. From the test results of PSV method, it was founded that rock type, specific gravity, coarse aggregate angularity, flat or elongated particles in coarse aggregate are significant to the resistance characteristic of coarse aggregate.

  • This study aims to examine the influence of the unit powder content of concrete and the fine aggregate ration of high flowing concrete after the improvement of grain shape of the coarse aggregate. According to the experimental results, flowbility and compating of concrete presents the best states in the S/a which has the smallest void ratio. The coarse aggregate after improvement of grain shape has been changed from 0.68 circular ratio of disc shape to 0.73 circular shape. It lead to be down 6% of fine aggregate ratio (from 47% to 41%), which is satisfactory to compacting. Also, the improvement of grain shape of the coarse aggregate lead the lowest unit powder content to be down 60kg/㎥ from (530kg/㎥ to 470kg/㎥). And about 11% unit water content can be reduced as unit powder conent is down.

  • This study, as a research for using crushed sand as a fine aggregate of concrete for nuclear structures, we improved the performance of impact crusher in the existing crushed sand production process and adjusted grain size to conform to ASTM C 33 The shape and grain size characteristics of a crushed sand were examined and concrete was prepared according to the substitution ratio of the sand to investigate the properties of fresh concrete and hardened concrete. The experimental results show that most of the concrete characteristics are equivalent to those of concrete using only heavy sand. However, when the substitution rate of steel sand exceeds 50%, the amount of air, compressive strength and tensile strength are somewhat reduced.
