Entomopathogenic fungi can be used to control a variety of sucking and chewing insects, with little effect on beneficial insects and natural enemies. Approximately 170 entomopathogenic fungal insecticides have been registered and used worldwide, with the recent focus being on the mode of action and mechanism of insect-fungal interactions. During the initial period of research and development, the industrialization of entomopathogenic fungi focused on the selection of strains with high virulence. However, improvement in productivity, including securing resistance to environmental stressors, is a major issue that needs to be solved. Although conidia are the primary application propagules, efforts are being made to overcome the limitations of blastospores to improve the economic feasibility of the production procedure. Fungal transformation is also being conducted to enhance insecticidal activity, and molecular biology is being used to investigate functions of various genes. In the fungi-based pest management market, global companies are setting up cooperative platforms with specialized biological companies in the form of M&As or partnerships with the aim of implementing a tank-mix strategy by combining chemical pesticides and entomopathogenic fungi. In this regard, understanding insect ecology in the field helps in providing more effective fungal applications in pest management, which can be used complementary to chemicals. In the future, when fungal applications are combined with digital farming technology, above-ground applications to control leaf-dwelling pests will be more effective. Therefore, for practical industrialization, it is necessary to secure clear research data on intellectual property rights.

Locusts, Locusta migratoria (Orthoptera: Acrididae) are periodical unpredictable agricultural pests worldwide and cause serious damage to crop production; however, little consideration has been given to the management of this pest. Herein, we constructed a locust-pathogenic fungal library and confirmed that some fungi could be used as resources for locust management. First, the entomopathogenic fungi were collected from sampled soils using a Tenebrio molitor-based baiting system. For the locust assay, a locust colony was obtained from the National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology. A total of 34 entomopathogenic fungal granules, which were produced by solid cultures, were placed in the plastic insect-rearing boxes (2 g/box) and nymphs of locust were contained in the box. In 3-7 days, mycosis was observed on the membranous cuticles of the head, abdomen, and legs of locusts. In particular, Metarhizium anisopliae, M. lepidiotae, and Clonostachys rogersoniana exhibited high virulence against the locust. Given that the 34 isolates could be used in field applications, their conidial production and stability (thermotolerance) were further characterized. In the thermotolerance assay, Paecilomyces and Purpureocillium isolates had higher thermotolerance than the other isolates. Most of the fungal isolates produced ca. >$1{\times}10^8conidia/g$ on millet grain medium. In a greenhouse trial, the granular application of M. anisopliae isolate on the soil surface resulted in 85.7% control efficacy. This work suggests that entomopathogenic fungi in a granular form can be effectively used to control the migratory locust.
To develope a microbial pesticide for the control of agricultural and forestal pests in Korea, the mass culture system of entomopathogenic fungi was studied. Previously, we have developed the mass culture system which was adaptable for the culture of Beauveria bassiana. In this study, we determined the efficacy of this mass culture system for other entomopathogenic fungi, B. bassiana, Beauveria brongniartii, Metarhizium anisopliae, and Verticillium lecanni. To determine the efficacy of mass culture system, we examined the growth rate of entomopathogenic fungi in this system which was composed of 1st liquid media for growth of blastospore and 2nd pellet media for growth of conidia. As the result, we obtained that the blastopore numbers increased 103-104 times in liquid media at 72 hrs post inoculation. The results showed that this mass culture system for the growth of entomopathogenic fungi was effective.

In June 2023, at the oat field on Kongju National University's Yesan Campus, flies infected with an entomopathogenic fungus were discovered. The flies were hanging with their wings folded backward. Fungal mycelia had sprouted on the abdomens of the flies. An analysis of the 28S ribosomal RNA sequence confirmed that the fungus was Entomophthora muscae. Moreover, cytochrome oxidase sequence analysis of the host insect identified it as Delia platura.
Entomopathogenic fungi are one of the microorganisms distributed worldwide, and they inhabit not only insects but also soils of various regions such as agricultural land and forest areas. In this study, entomopathogenic fungi distributed in the soil of forest areas in Korea were isolated using the insect-baiting method, and the relationship between the distribution and diversity of entomopathogenic fungi and the physical/chemical characteristics of the soil was analyzed. The soils were collected from five forest areas in Korea, and a total of 42 entomopathogenic fungal isolates were isolated from the collected soils. Among them, Beauveria bassiana (42.9%) and Metarhizium anisopliae (45.2%) were mainly isolated. In particular, it was confirmed that the distribution of M. anisopliae varies depending on the total nitrogen (g/kg) and organic matter content (%) of the soil. The soils in forest areas in Korea have a low pH of 4-5. Among all isolates, >50% of entomopathogenic fungi were isolated from silt loam. This study suggests that it will be helpful in understanding the relationship between the distribution and diversity of entomopathogenic fungi and the physical and chemical characteristics of soil.
Entomopathogenic fungus, Paecilomyces japonicus, has been commercially used as medicinal purpose . The silkworm, Bombyx mori, as an optimal host for the fungi, has been selected and used for the production of the fungal fruit bodies. In current method, newly molted fifth instal larvae should be exposed to the adverse stress environment of high temperature (3$0^{\circ}C$), high relative humidity ( 90%), and starvation for 24h for better fungal inoculation to the host insects. In this study, an alternative method using chemical agent, dexamethasone (DEX: an eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitor), was tried to get the immunodepressive effect on the larvae to elevate the inoculation rate of the fungi to the silkworm without any harsh rearing environment. DEX (100$\mu\textrm{g}$) showed significantly synergistic effect on the hemocyte lethality of the fungus, and was effective to decrease cellular immune responses measured by the number of hemocyte microaggregation and phenoloxidase activity of the fifth instar larvae in response to the fungal injection. A detergent of 0.05% Triton-X was effective to increase the in- oculation rate of the fungi to the larvae and used in all fungal spraying solutions. Without any environ- mental stress treatment, only DEX (100$\mu\textrm{g}$) injection to the fifth instar larvae followed by the fungal spray was effective to get the inoculation rate equivalent to the current fungal spray method requiring harsh rearing environment. These results suggest that the inoculation of P. japonicus can be elevated by the help of DEX and that the silkworms use eicosanoids to elicit cellular immune response against fungal pathogen.

Entomopathogenic fungi were isolated from Bemisia tabaci in an Oriental melon field, and their growth characteristics, factors related to a natural outbreak, and infectivity against Bemisia tabaci, Tetranychus urticae, and Frankliniella intonsa were investigated. The isolates had erect conidiophores bearing whorls of 4-6 phialides with a swollen base where cylindrical conidia of $3.0-3.4{\mu}m$ were attached. The isolates were identified as Isaria fumosorosea on the basis of morphological characteristics and an ITS sequence with 99% similarity. I. fumosorosea IFs-08 grew well on Sabouraud dextrose agar+yeast extract medium(3.2 mm/day/$24^{\circ}C$); it grew better at $35^{\circ}C$ than at $15^{\circ}C$. The isolates of I. fumosorosea-IFs were highly infective and killed 93.9-96.7% B. tabaci, 84.9-92.0% T. urticae, and 81.5-84.4% F. intonsa in bioassay, whereas three isolates (Isaria tenuipes, Isaria farinosa, and Isaria fumosorosea) from KACC showed a low infectivity of 10-20%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of I. fumosorosea isolated from B. tabaci in Korea.
This study was conducted to investigate the total phenol contents, antioxidative activities and antibacterial activities of twenty species of entomopathogenic fungi. The total phenol content was highest in Aspergillus flavus ($553.0{\pm}52.15{\mu}g/g$) and A. parasiticus ($529.9{\pm}60.10{\mu}g/g$). On the other hand those in other strains were within the range of $26.6{\sim}121.9{\mu}g/g$. The antioxdative activity was shown in the most of strains and the highest DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity was observed in A. flavus ($90.9{\pm}2.90%$) and A. parasiticus ($77.9{\pm}4.13%$). This result indicated that the antioxidative activities were very correlated with the total phenol contents. The antibacterial activitiy was found in the every tested pathogenic bacteria. Especially, the antibacterial activity was strongest against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherchia coli.

Benzylideneacetone (BZA) is a compound derived from culture broth of an entomopathogenic bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophila (Xn). Its immunosuppressive activity is caused by its inhibitory activity against eicosanoid biosynthesis. This BZA is being developed as an additive to enhance control efficacy of other commercial microbial insecticides. This study was focused on the enhancement of the immunosuppressive activity of BZA by generating its chemical derivatives toward decrease of its hydrophobicity. Two hydroxylated BZA and one sugar-conjugated BZA were chemically synthesized. All derivatives had the inhibitory activities of BZA against phospholipase $A_2$ ($PLA_2$) and phenoloxidase (PO) of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, but BZA was the most potent. Mixtures of any BZA derivative with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) significantly increased pathogenicity of Bt. BZA also inhibited colony growth of four plant pathogenic fungi. However, BZA derivatives (especially the sugar-conjugated BZA) lost the antifungal activity. These results indicated that BZA and its derivatives inhibited catalytic activities of two immune-associated enzymes ($PLA_2$ and PO) of P. xylostella and enhanced Bt pathogenicity. We suggest its use to control plant pathogenic fungi.
Alternaria sesami, A. sesamicola, A. tenuis, A. longissima, Cercospora sesami, Cephalosporium sp., Corynespora cassiicola, Fusarium equiseti, F. moniliforme, F. oxysporum, F. semitectum, Macrophomina phaseolina and Myrothecium roridum were detected from 40 seed samples of sesame. A sesami, A. sesamicola, A. tenuis and C. cassiicola were the predominant fungi. Except C. cassiicola, all fungi were almost completly reduced and wiped out the infection by pretreatment with chlorine. Plating components also indicate that C. cassiicola was well-established infections. Seedborne infection of C. cussiicola caused heavy seed rot and seedling mortality. Detailed description has been given on the habit character of C. cassiicola under stereoscopic microscope and the variation in colony character and spore morphology have been taken into account. In inoculation experiments, C. cassiicola produced severe leaf and stem spots and blights on sesame plants resulted in ultimate death of the plants. A. sesami, A. sesamicola A. longissima and C. sesami also produced mild to severe leaf spotting and leaf blight when suspension of their conidia were sprayed on to plants. In soil inoculation experiments, F. oxysporum and M. phaseolina were the most pathogenic causing seed rot and seedling blight.
