  • A method to estimate damage of bridge structures is developed using system identification approach. Dynamic behavior of damaged structures is represented by a non-linear hysteretic moment model. Structural properties can be evaluated through system identification. To incorporate variability of the structural properties and uncertainties of structural response, damage is represented as random quantities. Numerical example is shown for the bridge structure under different ground excitation.

  • The existence of grooves on the surface of bond coat has significant effect on the instability of thermal barrier system. In this work, the thermal-mechanical fatigue experiments were performed under various thermal and mechanical loads for FeCralloy specimens with and without yttrium dopant to observe the deformation of surface grooves. The effect of temperature, fatigue load and the ratio of curvature on the deformation of grooves were investigated. As the results, it has been found that the higher load level and the higher curvature ratio induces the larger deformation near the grooves. However, the addition of yittrium dopant induces the adverse results.

  • Analysis of the aerodynamic performance of a bobsleigh has been performed for various types of bobsleigh body shape. To analyze the aerodynamic performance of the bobsleigh, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stoke equations were used with the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model as a turbulence closure. Grid structure was composed of unstructured tetrahedral grids. The radii of curvature of cowling, and height and length of front bumper at the tip on the drag coefficient were selected as geometric parameters. And, the effects of these parameters on the aerodynamic performance, i.e., the drag coefficient, were evaluated. The results shows that the aerodynamic performance is significantly affected by the height of front bumper and radius of curvature.

  • Flame propagation velocity is the one ofmainmechanismof the stabilization of triple flame. To quantify the triple flame propagation velocity, Bilger presents the triple flame propagation velocity depending on the mixture fraction gradient, based on the laminar jet flow theory. However, in spite of these many analyses, there was not presented any relation of these variables, triple flame propagation velocity, radius of flame curvature and scalar dissipation rate indirectly. In the present research, we have checked the results of numerical simulation with experiment and numerical analysis and verified the flame propagation velocity with a scalar dissipation rate proposed by Bilger through the numerical simulation. Also we have clarified that flame propagation velocity was depended on the radius of flame curvature and scalar dissipation rate.

  • Most of mechanical structures are composed of many substructures connected to one another by various types of mechanical joints with various shapes of cutouts. It is important to study these connected structures under dynamic forces for evaluation of stress concentration. In this paper, a FQI(fatigue quality index) analysis using the concept of SF(severity factor) is performed to various shape of elliptical hole. The SF is affected by the location of cutout in plate and radius ratio, static SF is analyzed with finite element analysis and the equation of FQI for predicting a dynamic SF is formed.

  • The shear stress on a surface due to the thin film fluid flow is an important issue. In case of a rotating disk, the fluid is delivered to the edge of the disk by centrifugal force, which acts as a body force on the fluid. Wear of a surface is affected by the shear stress acting on the surface and curvature. In this study, we utilize computational fluid dynamics software to model the ratio of curvature and local shear stress on solid surfaces. The key goal of the study is to determine an optimized curvature for the thin film fluid flow on a solid surface in order to minimize the local shear stress affecting the wear of this surface. Our results on the effects of curvature will be utilized for the design of devices that utilize thin film fluid flow on a solid surface, such as rotating-disk spray systems and thin film coating.

  • A parametric study for varying the radii of curvature is performed with a curved tub girder bridge having three continuous spans. The bracing forces of top lateral bracings from the results of numerical equations are compared to those of 3-dimensional finite element analyses. New modifying factors applicable in computing the nominal member forces of top lateral bracings were suggested. The numerical equations were derived based on one girder system, and it is shown that the numerical equations exhibit some errors compared with 3D FEA results. The main reason for this phenomenon lies on the number of girders. The twin girder system has an external cross-beam between inner and outer girder. It also has larger lateral stiffness than the single girder system. Finally, the distributions by the torsion, bending, distortion, and lateral loading of the top lateral bracing forces were presented in this paper.

  • Automatic magnetic abrasive polishing (MAP), which can be applied after machining of a mold on a machine tool without unloading, is very effective for finishing a free-form surface such as a complicated injection mold. This study aimed to improve the efficiency of MAP of a non-ferrous mold surface. The magnetic array table and control of the electromagnet polarity were applied in the MAP of a free-form surface. In this study, first, the magnetic flux density on the mold surface was simulated to determine the optimal conditions for the polarity array. Then, the MAP efficiency for polishing a non-ferrous mold surface was estimated in terms of the change in the radius of curvature and the magnetic flux density. The most improved surface roughness was observed not only in the upward tool path but also in the working area of larger magnetic flux density.
