  • Effect of loop seal geometry on solid circulation characteristics was investigated with two different types of upper loop seals and lower loop seals in a gas-solid fluidized bed system. Upper loop seal which has a wide gap between solid intake and outlet parts requires more fluidization gas to maintain smooth solid circulation. Moreover, the lower loop seal which has a wide gap requires more fluidization gas to achieve the same solid circulation rate. These results can be explained by results of minimum fluidization velocity in the lower loop seals. Consequently, if a loop seal has a wide gap between solid intake and outlet parts, more fluidization gases should be fed to ensure enough solid circulation rate and smooth solid circulation.

  • Effects of operating variables on solid circulation rate were measured and discussed using two-interconnected circulating fluidized bed system at ambient temperature and pressure. OCN 706-1100 particles were used as oxygen carrier. The measured solid circulation rates increased as the lower loop seal gas flow rates and the solid height in the fuel reactor increased. Suitable operating conditions to avoid choking of the air reactor were confirmed. Continuous long-term operations of steady-state solid circulation were also demonstrated at two different conditions based on the operating window.

  • The fluidized solid particles not only increase heat transfer rates but have a cleaning function eliminating contaiminated substances caused from condensate water. An experiment was performed to measure heat transfer rates and pressure drops in a fluidized heat exchanger with circulating solid particle for constant heat transfer rate. As a results, the heat transfer rate increased by 26.9~2.6%, heat transfer coefficient by 11.9~2.7%, and pressure drop by 79.1~10.9% at the gas velocity of 6.1 ~12.1 m/s and solid particle flow rate of 100~50 kg/h with the heat exchanger of H: 50 mm, $D_p=2 in,\; and\;D_{BP}$=30 mm.

  • The commercial viability of heat exchanger is mainly dependent on their long-term fouling characteristics because the fouling increases the pressure loss and degrades the thermal performance of a heat exchanger. An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of fluid flow in a fluidized bed heat exchanger with circulating various solid particles. The present work showed that the drag force coefficients of particles in the internal flow were higher than in the external flow, in addition, they were lower with the shapes of particles being closer to the spherical geometries.

  • New experimental method to measure solid descending velocity in a vertical downcomer was presented and effects of downcomer diameter and particle properties on descending velocities for Geldart group A, B, and D particle have been measured and investigated. The effect of initial solid inventory on solid descending velocity was negligible. However, solid flow rate, solid circulation rate and solid descending velocity increased as the downcomer diameter increased. Moreover, solid descending velocity increased linearly as the downcomer diameter increased and showed distinguishable trend for Geldart group D particle from Geldart group A and B particles. Empirical correlations of solid descending velocity for Geldart group D and Geldart group A and B particles have been derived based on the measured values. The correlations could predict well the solid descending velocities.

  • The intrinsic $CO_2$ separation and hydrogen production system is a novel concept using oxidation and reduction reactions of oxygen carrier for both $CO_2$ capture and high purity hydrogen production. The process consists of a fuel reactor (FR), a steam reactor (SR) and an air reactor (AR). The natural gas ($CH_4$) is oxidized to $CO_2$ and steam by the oxygen carrier in FR, whereas the steam is reduced to hydrogen by oxidation of the reduced oxygen carrier in SR. The oxygen carrier is fully oxidized by air in AR. In the present study, the chemical looping moving bed reactor having 200 L/h hydrogen production capacity is designed and the hydrodynamic properties were determined. Compared with other reactors, two moving bed reactors (FR, SR) were used to obtain high conversion and selectivity of the oxygen carrier. The desirable solid circulation rates are calculated to be in the range of $20{\sim}100kg/m^2s$ from the conceptual design. The solid circulation rate can be controlled by aeration in a loop-seal. To maintain the gas velocity in the moving beds (FR, SR) at the minimum fluidization velocity is found to be suitable for the stable operation. The solid holdup in moving beds decrease with increasing gas velocity and solid circulation rate.

  • To develop SEWGS (sorption enhanced water gas shift) system using dry $CO_2$ absorbent for pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture, hydrodynamic characteristics of $CO_2$ absorbents were measured and investigated. The minimum fluidization velocity of $CO_2$ absorbent was measured and the effects of the operating conditions were investigated to operate the system at bubbling fluidized bed condition. The minimum fluidization velocity decreased as pressure and temperature increased. Moreover, the minimum fluidization velocity decreased as column diameter increased. The effects of operating conditions on the solid circulation rate were measured and investigated to select appropriate operating conditions for continuous $CO_2$ capture and regeneration. The measured solid circulation rates were ranged between 10 and 65 kg/h and increased as the solid injection velocity, gas velocity in the regeneration reactor, and solid height increased.

  • To develop an ash separator for the solid fuel chemical looping combustion system, effects of operating variables such as solid injection nozzle velocity, diameter of solid injection nozzle, gap between solid injection line and vent line, vent line inside diameter, and solid intake height on solid separation rate and solid separation efficiency were measured and discussed using heavy and coarse particle and light and fine particles mixture as bed material in an acrylic fluidized bed apparatus. The solid separation rate increased as the solid injection nozzle velocity and the diameter of solid injection nozzle increased. However, the solid separation rate decreased as the gap between solid injection line and vent line, the vent line inside diameter, and the solid intake height increased. The solid separation efficiency was in inverse proportion to the solid separation rate. In this study, we could get high solid separation rate up to 2.39 kg/hr with 91.6% of solid separation efficiency.
