Ni/CGO cermets were fabricated as the anode for SOFC which uses CGO as the electrolyte. And their electrical conductivity, electrochemical reactivity, and thermal expansion coefficient were optimized through the variation of NiO/CGO particle size ration and their composition. The electrical conductivity of the cermet was increased abruptly at a certain Ni content and the percolation concentration was decreased with the decreasing particle size ratio. Anodic overpotential was also decreased with the decreasing particle size ratio. For a fixed ratio it showed a minimum value at 50 wt.%. Thermal expansion coefficient was increased monotonically with increasing Ni contents, however it did not depend on the size ratio. With three properties taken into account, the cermet of particle size ration of 0.03 and composition of 50 wt.% was judged to be optimal as the anode.
Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) have attracted much attention due to clean, efficient and environmental-friendly generation of electricity for next-generation energy conversion devices. Recently, many studies have been reported on improving the performance of SOFC electrodes and electrolytes by applying atomic layer deposition (ALD) process, which has advantages of excellent film quality and conformality, and precise control of film thickness by utilizing its unique self-limiting surface reaction. ALD process with these advantages has been shown to provide functional ceramic interfaces for SOFC electrodes and electrolytes. In this article, recent examples of successful functionalization and stabilization on SOFC electrodes and electrolytes by the application of ALD process for realizing high performance SOFC cells are reported.
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising eco-friendly energy conversion system due to their high efficiency, low pollutant emission and fuel flexibility. High operating temperatures, however, leads to the crucial drawbacks such as incompatibility between the components and high thermal stress. Proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) with proton-conducting oxide (PCO) materials are new types of fuel cells that can solve the problems of conventional SOFCs. Many studies have been proceeded to improve the performance of electrolytes and electrodes, and triple conductive oxides (TCOs) have attracted significant attention as high performance PCFC electrodes.
Recently, the hybrid system combining fuel cell and gas turbine has drawn much attention owing to its high efficiency and ultra low emission. It is now on the verge of world wide development and various system configurations have been proposed. A national project funded by Korean government has also been initiated to develop a pressurized hybrid system. This work aims at presenting design performance analysis for various possible system configurations as an initial step for the system development. Study focuses are given to major design options including the power ratio between gas turbine and fuel cell, reforming method (internal or external), reforming heat source (reforming burner, cathode hot air, fuel cell heat release) and steam supply method for reformer (anode gas recirculation, external steam generator). A wide variation in performance among different configurations has been predicted.
Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) operates at high temperatures in range of 600-800℃. Since layers of SOFC are composed of different substances, different thermal expansion in SOFC can result in defects under high temperature conditions. For understanding relation between temperature field and the thermal deformation in SOFC, temperature and strain field were simultaneously estimated using thermographic phosphors by optical measurement. Temperature fields were obtained by the life-time method, and the temperature differences of one specimen was checked with thermocouple. The thermal deformation was estimated by digital image correlation (DIC) method with extracted phosphorescence images. To investigate the deformation accuracy of DIC measurement, thermographic phosphors were coated with and without grid pattern on aluminum surface. Simultaneous measurement of temperature fields and thermal deformation were carried out for YSZ. This study will be helpful to multi-sensing of temperature field and thermal deformation on SOFC cells.
