Effect of Multiple Injection on the Performance and Emission Characteristics of Lean Burn Gasoline Direct Injection Engines (다단분사가 초희박 GDI 엔진의 성능 및 배기에 미치는 영향)

  • Currently, in order to meet the reinforced emissions regulations for harmful exhaust gas including carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) as a greenhouse gas, technologies for reducing $CO_2$ emission and fuel consumption are being developed. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) systems have the advantage of improved fuel economy and higher power output than port fuel injection gasoline engine systems. The aim of this study is to examine the performance and emission characteristics of a lean burn GDI engine equipped with spray-guided-type combustion system. Stable lean combustion was achieved with a late fuel injection strategy under a constant operating condition. Further improvement in specific fuel consumption is possible with the introduction of multiple fuel injection strategies, which also increases hydrocarbon (HC) and nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) emissions and decreases carbon monoxide (CO) emission.

Construction of a High-Altitude Ignition Test Facility for a Small Gas-turbine Combustor (소형 가스터빈 연소기 고공환경 점화 시험 설비 구축 및 검증 실험)

  • A small high altitude test facility has been developed to investigate ignition performance of a small gas-turbine combustor under high altitude conditions. Supersonic diffusers and a heat exchanger were used to perform a low pressure and a low temperature condition, respectively. Experimental results showed that the low pressure environment could be controlled by upstream pressure of primary nozzle flow and low temperature environment by mixture ratio of cooled air and ambient air. Ignition performance tests were performed to verify the performance of the facility under simulated high altitude conditions. Conclusively, it was proven that the test facility could be used for ignition performance test of a small gas-turbine combustor under high altitude condition of approximately 6,100m.

Combustion Characteristics of Premixed Burner for Domestic Condensing Gas Boiler Using Metal Fiber and Throttle Body (Metal Fiber와 Throttle Body를 적용한 가정용 응축보일러용 예혼합 버너의 연소특성)

  • Premixed combustion has many advantages, including low CO and NOx emissions and a small combustor volume. These characteristics allow a compact design and wide application to condensing boilers with high thermal efficiencies. This study focused on the combustion characteristics in a premixed combustion burner using metal fiber and a throttle body. The results showed that a blue flame was found to be very stable at a heating load of 6,250-25,000 kcal/h when implementing the proper metal fiber, baffle plate, and throttle body. The NOx emission was less than 11 ppm under an equivalence ratio of 0.724-0.795, and the CO emission was less than 50 ppm under the same equivalence ratio. The thermal efficiency, which is a very important index when condensing a gas boiler, was observed to be above 96.3% under an equivalence ratio of 0.750.

Experimental Investigation on Combustion Characteristics of Liquid Kerosene and Gelled Kerosene Using Shear Coaxial Injector (전단동축인젝터를 이용한 액상 케로신 및 젤 케로신의 연소특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, a hot-firing test of a lab-scale gel rocket motor using liquid kerosene and gelled kerosene as fuel was performed in order to analyze the discrepancy of the static and dynamic pressure between the two fuels. The static pressure, characteristic velocity, and characteristic velocity efficiency of the liquid kerosene and gelled kerosene did not show any significant difference. However, in the case of dynamic pressure characteristics, the pressure oscillation amplitude in a specific high frequency region of the gelled kerosene demonstrated a significantly higher amplitude than liquid kerosene case. This is considered to be the effect of an intrinsic combustion mechanism of the gel propellant, and it can be postulated that this may act as a dominant factor influencing the high frequency combustion instability of the gel rocket motor.

  • The problem of non-ideal detonation propagation velocities in heterogeneous hybrid mixtures is studied in the case of a high explosive with suspended fine aluminum (Al) particles. Since there exist difference in the time scales of the characteristic induction and combustion of High Explosives and solid particles, the process of energy release behind the leading shock front occurs over an extended period of time. The problem is analyzed by the theory of the mechanics of multiphase media with mass, momentum and heat exchanges between particles and gases. The numerical results match the available experimental results of heavily aluminized (5~25% Al weight) HMX explosive obtained previously.

Controlling Low Frequency Instability in Hybrid Rocket Combustion With Swirl Injection and Fuel Insert (스월 분사와 삽입연료에 의한 하이브리드 로켓 연소의 저주파수 연소불안정 조절)

  • In hybrid rocket combustion, the oxidizer swirl injection is frequently used to stabilize the combustion as the rotational velocity component affects the boundary layer flow. However, as the swirl strength increases, a problem arises where the combustion performance changes too much. Thus, this study attempts to control the low frequency instability while minimizing the change in combustion performance by adapting attenuated swirl injection with fuel insert used in reference [7]. To this end, a series of experimental tests were performed by varying swirl intensity and the location of the fuel insert. In the tests, the occurrence of combustion instability and combustion performance were closely monitored. The results confirmed that combustion instability was successfully suppressed at the condition of the swirl angle 6 degree and the location of fuel insert 310 mm. And, the changes in combustion pressure, O/F ratio, and fuel regression rate were found as minimal compared to the baseline case. Also the results reconfirmed that the formation of positive coupling between two high frequency oscillations in 500 Hz band, combustion pressure(p') and heat release oscillation(q'), is the necessary and sufficient condition of the occurrence of low frequency instability.

  • The main objective of this study was investigation of natural gas flames in a lean premixed swirl-stabilized dump combustor with an attention focused on the effect of the various fuel-air mixing section geometry on the combustion instability characteristics. The multi-channel dynamic pressure transducers were located on the combustor and inlet mixing section region to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference phase at each dynamic pressure measurement results. Dynamic pressures were also measured to investigate characteristics of combustion at the same time. The combustor and mixing section length was varied in order to have different acoustic resonance characteristics from 800 to 1800 mm in combustor and 470, 550, 870 mm in mixing section. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of coupled with the combustor and mixing section. In this instability characteristics, pressure oscillation of mixing section part was larger than pressure oscillation of combustor. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.

  • Laser-induced combustions and explosions generated by high laser irradiances were explored by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) in rich, and stoichiometric conditions. The laser used for target ablation is a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with 7 ns pulse duration at wavelength of 1064 nm laser energies from 40 mJ to 2500 mJ ($6.88{\times}10^{10}-6.53{\times}10^{11}\;W/cm^2$). The plasma light source from aluminum detected by the echelle grating spectrometer and coupled to the gated ICCD(a resolution (${\lambda}/{\Delta}{\lambda}$) of 5000). This spectroscopic study has been investigated for obtaining both the atomic signals of aluminum (fuel) - oxygen (oxidizer) and the calculated ambient condition (plasma temperature and electron density). The essence of the paper is observing specific electron density ratio which can support the processes of combustion and explosion between ablated aluminum plume and oxygen from air by inducing high power laser.

  • We developed the carbon fabric/EPDM chamber insulation in order to protect motor case with high intensity gas flow. A six-inch simulation motor connected with extension tube was designed to test ablation characteristic of insulation. High intensity gas flow was induced by a FRP disc with hole between motor and extension tube. After ground test, ablation depth of the carbon fabric/EPDM insulation was decreased compared to another insulations after ground static test.
