  • Natural fiber reinforced composites are emerging as low-cost, lightweight, recyclable, and eco-friendly materials. These are biodegradable and non-abrasive. Due to eco-friendly and biodegradable characteristics of natural fibers, they are being considered as potential candidates to replace the conventional fibers. The chemical, mechanical, and physical properties of natural fibers have distinct features depending upon the cellulose content of the fibers which varies from fiber to fiber. The mechanical properties of composites are influenced mainly by the adhesion between matrix and fibers. Several chemical and physical modification methods of fiber surface were incorporated to improve the tiber-matrix adhesion resulting in the enhancement of mechanical properties of the composites. This paper outlines the works reported on natural tiber reinforced composites with special reference to the type of fibers, polymer matrix, processing techniques, treatment of fibers, and fiber-matrix interface.

  • As electronic devices become more advanced and smaller, one of the biggest problems to solve is the heat affecting the efficiency and lifetime of instruments. High thermal conductivity materials, in particular, metal or ceramic ones, have been used to reduce the heat generated from devices. However, due to their low mechanical properties and high weight, thermally conductive composites composed with polymers having a light-weight and good mechanical properties as a matrix and carbon materials having high thermal conductivity as a thermally conductive filler have been attracting great attention. To improve the thermal conductivity of the composites, a phonon scattering must be suppressed to move phonon effectively. In this review, we classified researches related to phonon migration and scattering inhibition of carbon/polymer composites, and discussed various methods to improve thermal conductivity.

  • Polymer composites are materials in which various fillers are uniformly dispersed on the basis of organic resin. They have excellent processability and diversity for industrial products. Recently, as carbon nanomaterials are developed, there is a great deal of effort to use them as reinforcing fillers to fabricate high performance composite materials. In order to transfer the inherent properties of fillers into composite materials as much as possible, the good dispersion and orientation of fillers, and favorable interfacial interaction between fillers and matrix are considered to be very important. In this review article, we intent to derive and explain the relationship between surface chemical structure of fillers and physical properties of composites as a strategy of high strength and toughness of graphenebased polyimide composites.

  • Cure shrinkage during cure process of polymer matrix composites develope residual stress that cause some structural deformation, such as spring-in, spring-out and warpage. The carbon/epoxy prepreg used in this study is Hexply M21EV/34%/UD268NFS/IMA-12K supplied by Hexcel corp. Cure shrinkage and degree of cure measured by TMA(thermomechanical analyzer) and DSC(differential scanning calorimetry). Cure shrinkages are measured by TMA within a temperature range of $140{\sim}240^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere, and degree of cure determined by the heat of reaction using dynamic and isothermal DSC runs in argon atmosphere. As a result, the cure shrinkage is increased dramatically in a degree of cure range between 27~80%. the higher the cure temperature, the lower the degree of cure occurring to begin cure shrinkage.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely investigated as reinforcements of CNT/polymer nanocomposites to enhance mechanical and electrical properties of polymer matrices since their discovery in the early 90's. Furthermore, the number of studies about incorporating CNTs into carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) to reinforce their polymer matrices is increasing recently. In this study, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were dispersed in epoxy with 0.2 wt.% and 0.5 wt.%. Then, the SWNT/epoxy mixtures were processed to carbon fiber composites by a vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) and a wet lay up method. The processed composite samples were tested for the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). The relationship between the interlaminar shear strengths and processing, and the reinforcement mechanism of carbon nanotubes were investigated. CNT/epoxy nanocomposite specimens showed the increased tensile properties. However, the ILSS of carbon fiber composites was not enhanced by reinforcing the matrix with CNTs because of processing issues caused by increased viscosity of the matrix due to addition of CNTs particularly for a VARTM method.

  • In this study, the mechanical behavior and interface properties of boron nitride nanotube-poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites are predicted using the molecular dynamics simulations and the double inclusion model. After modeling nanocomposite unit cell embedding single-walled nanotube and polymer, the stiffness matrix is determined from uniaxial tension and shear tests. Through the orientation average of the transversely isotropic stiffness matrix, the effective isotropic elastic constants of randomly dispersed microstructure of nanocomposites. Compared with the double inclusion model solution with a perfect interfacial condition, it is found that the interface between boron nitride nanotube and polymer matrix is weak in nature. To characterize the interphase surrounding the nanotube, the two step domain decomposition method incorporating a linear spring model at the interface is adopted. As a result, various combinations of the interfacial compliance and the interphase elastic constants are successfully determined from an inverse analysis.

  • Self-sensing and interfacial evaluation of Ni nanowire/polymer composites were investigated using electro-macromechanical technique, which can be used fur a feasible sensing measurement on tensile and compressive loading/consequent unloading, temperature, and humidity. Mechanical properties of Ni nanowire with different aspect ratio and adding contents in either epoxy or silicone composites were measured indirectly using electro-pullout test under uniform and non-uniform cyclic loadings. Comparing apparent modulus with the conventional mechanical tensile modulus of Ni nanowire/epoxy composites, the trends were consistent with each other. Ni nanowire/epoxy composites showed the sensing response on humidity and temperature. Self-sensing on applied tensile and compressive loading/unloading was also responded for Ni nanowire/silicone composites via electrical contact resistivity showing the opposite trend between tension and compression. It can be due to the different electrically-interconnecting mechanisms of dispersed Ni nanowires embedded in silicone matrix.
