  • Despite the growing attention on artificial intelligence-based automated scoring technology as a support method for the introduction of descriptive items in school environments and large-scale assessments, there is a noticeable lack of foundational research in mathematics compared to other subjects. This study developed an automated scoring model for two descriptive items in first-year middle school mathematics using the Random Forest algorithm, evaluated its performance, and explored ways to enhance this performance. The accuracy of the final models for the two items was found to be between 0.95 to 1.00 and 0.73 to 0.89, respectively, which is relatively high compared to automated scoring models in other subjects. We discovered that the strategic selection of the number of evaluation categories, taking into account the amount of data, is crucial for the effective development and performance of automated scoring models. Additionally, text preprocessing by mathematics education experts proved effective in improving both the performance and interpretability of the automated scoring model. Selecting a vectorization method that matches the characteristics of the items and data was identified as one way to enhance model performance. Furthermore, we confirmed that oversampling is a useful method to supplement performance in situations where practical limitations hinder balanced data collection. To enhance educational utility, further research is needed on how to utilize feature importance derived from the Random Forest-based automated scoring model to generate useful information for teaching and learning, such as feedback. This study is significant as foundational research in the field of mathematics descriptive automatic scoring, and there is a need for various subsequent studies through close collaboration between AI experts and math education experts.

  • In Korea, the traces of Mongolian history and culture are often found in Korean life and customs. Under these perceptions, this study has attempted to develop the learning contents using the Mongolian historical and cultural heritages in Korea. For this, the perspective on Mongolia in Korean History and Social Studies textbooks and the exhibition of Mongolian cultural materials in a museum have been analyzed. In addition, this study has researched a plan to develop learning contents for exhibition and education using the Mongolian historical & cultural heritage and folklore materials in Korea and people's perspective on Mongolia in the ancient western maps as a way of understanding the historical and cultural heritage between Korea and Mongolia. In addition, a way of taking advantage of the Mongolian historical and cultural heritage in Korea from the view of world history has been proposed to share historical views and promote cultural exchanges between the two countries. Furthermore, the development of learning contents of the museum using the historical and cultural heritage between Korea and Mongolia could be grounds for humanistic studies from the view of understanding multiculture and characteristics of international culture.

  • Sea-surface temperature (SST) is one of the most important oceanic variables for understanding air-sea interactions, heat flux variations, and oceanic circulation in the global ocean. Extremely low SSTs from 0℃ down to -2℃ should be more important than other normal temperatures because of their notable roles in inducing and regulating global climate and environmental changes. To understand the temporal and spatial variability of such extremely low SSTs in the global ocean, the long-term SST climatology was calculated using the daily SST database of satellites observed for the period from 1982 to 2018. In addition, the locations of regions with extremely low surface temperatures of less than 0℃ and monthly variations of isothermal lines of 0℃ were investigated using World Ocean Atlas (WOA) climatology based on in-situ oceanic measurements. As a result, extremely low temperatures occupied considerable areas in polar regions such as the Arctic Ocean and Antarctic Ocean, and marginal seas at high latitudes. Six earth science textbooks were analyzed to investigate how these extremely low temperatures were visualized. In most textbooks, illustrations of SSTs began not from extremely low temperatures below 0℃ but from a relatively high temperature of 0℃ or higher, which prevented students from understanding of concepts and roles of the low SSTs. As data visualization is one of the key elements of data literacy, illustrations of the textbooks should be improved to ensure that SST data are adequately visualized in the textbooks. This study emphasized that oceanic literacy and data literacy could be cultivated and strengthened simultaneously through visualizations of oceanic big data by using satellite SST data and oceanic in-situ measurements.

  • In the early 20th century, Yeomjae Song Tae-hoe (念齋 宋泰會, 1872-1941), a disciple and onetime adopted son of teacher Song Su-myeon(宋修勉, 1847-1916), moved to Gochang and laid the foundation for Gochang calligraphy and painting, and it can be seen that a full-fledged flow began. Yeomjae Song Tae-hoe was a scholar and calligrapher of the late Joseon Dynasty and modern period from Hwasun, Jeollanam-do. He is a person who created the foundation of Gochang calligraphy and painting while working as an educator in Chinese literature, calligraphy, and painting, mainly in his hometown of Hwasun and Gochang, while engaging in creative activities. He was intelligent from a young age and showed an extraordinary talent for calligraphy. At the age of 16, he passed the Jinsa exam (童蒙進士) and became the youngest student to study at Sungkyunkwan. He was active by holding exhibitions nationwide based in Gochang and Jeonju, and was also an educator who fostered younger students by establishing Gochang High School (currently, Gochang Middle and High School) to cultivate national spirit and history. Yeomjae drew strong and healthy landscape paintings under the absolute influence of the painting style of Saho Song Su-myeon, and dealt with various materials of southern school literati paintings such as flowers and birds and four plants. In particular, he is a representative calligrapher who encompasses the early modern era and the modern era in that he expressed his interest in new cultural artifacts as well as the realization of a modern-oriented realistic landscape based on Korean natural beauty. He laid the foundation for modern and contemporary calligraphy and painting. Goam Lee Eung-no (顧菴 李應魯, 1904-1989), a world-renowned painter, learned the basics of ink painting from Yeomjae in his late teens. However, compared to his various artistic and social activities, it is regrettable that he is limited and evaluated as a local writer.

  • The number of professionals in the science and engineering fields decreases all over the world. Especially in Korea, the declining rate of both the laborable and economically active population, aging of the population at the fastest level, and the declining birth rate make it tougher to secure the core brains of the future. After speculation of all programs above, some common factors have been derived and every program appeared to have the support for each level of inducing, caring, and utilizing. And the means of support could be categorized into the financial, legal, and social aspects. Lastly, a logical tool called Systems Thinking has been applied to the FLS Conditions and the Brain Internalization Process to assure the efficacy and applicability of the models. This is to minimize any de facto side effects by analyzing all 'feedback loops' stemming from the models. And the 'causal loop diagrams' have been utilized to come with the complementary measures. Such series of verification could convince the virtue of the models. Governments and universities can make use of the FLS Conditions and the Brain Internalization Process so the policies or plans about the foreign brains can be built in a uniformized and consistent framework. I hope, as a result, the international competency of Korea to induce and utilize the foreign brains be raised with the constant and standardized formality.
