  • Quick lime made from limestone that are deposited abundantly in Korea has excellent potentials for stabilization of clayey soils. If Korea is able to take advantage of its abundant supply, economical efficiency could be achieved through mass production as well as being able to take advantage of utilization of natural resources. For stabilizing of clayey soil with lime, it is necessary to determine the required quantities of lime firstly and to evaluate the degree of stabilization with lime content. In this test, the quantity of lime required for 2 clayey soils which located in Seunggok and Bugok province respectively, and for 2 clay minerals-kaolinite and montmorillonite-were determined by ASTM C 977-92 and were evaluated for solidification of each samples with changing lime contents by Atterberg limit test and pH test. It was also evaluated for the improvement of each sample with lime content and curing time. The sample which added lime content determined by ASTM C 977-92 increased plastic limit, unconfined compression strength, and decreased pH in increasing trend.

  • The method of using organic acid is more environment-friendly for it improves the strength of the ground. The method of proliferating microbes makes soil particle bonded, finally improves the strength of the ground and decreasing permeability. Although there has been the research on the effect of strength increasing, there has never been a research on the evaluation of field application. In this paper, through the light drop weight test, the dynamic cone penetration test, the field density test, the variation of strength was investigated in the mixed ground with organic acid for 56 days. As the results of the field test, it was found that the strength and stiffness of the ground increased with organic acid, and that through SEM-EDS, the precipitation of calcium carbonate made by specified microbe obviously increased with organic acid material and so the ground was improved. Therefore, the sustainable development of this method needs to be analysed more in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm strength and effectiveness of grouting of the sand treated with bacteria. In order to analyze the cementation of sand treated with bacteria, five types of specimens(Not treated, Cement 2% treatment, Cement 4% treatment, Cement 2% + $CaCO_3$ 2% treatment and $CaCO_3$ 4% treatment) were made. Unconfined compressive strength tests were done on $D\;5cm{\times}H\;10cm$ specimens and biogrouting tests were performed on $D\;6cm{\times}H\;12cm$ specimens to observe the effectiveness of grouting with bacteria. As a result, Cement 2% + $CaCO_3$ 2% treatment was found to be the most effective in terms of the unconfined compressive strength.

  • In order to understand the mechanism of cementation of soft soils treated with bacteria, three types of specimens(untreated, normal bacteria concentration treated, and high bacteria concentration treated) were made. Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM), EDX and X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses were performed on the soft silt and loose sand specimens. Compared with the untreated specimen, a clearer cementation between particles was observed in the high bacteria concentration treated specimen. Based on the scanning electron microscope(SEM) EDX analyses, more calcium carbonate was observed in the specimen treated with high bacteria concentration than other specimens. On the basis of the preliminary results, it appears that microbial cementation can occur in the soft soil. Further study on the cementation of soils using bacteria is necessary to validate this result.

  • In this study, the objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of calcium carbonate powder, produced by the microbial reactions, on the strength of soft ground (sand). To analyze the cementation effects of calcium carbonate powder produced by microbial reactions on the strength of the sand, six different types of specimens (untreated, calcium carbonate, cement, carbonate+cement (1:9, 3:7, 5:5)) were made. The specimen were tested after curing (7 and 28 days). Uniaxial compressive strengths were measured on $D5cm{\times}H10cm$ specimens. Based on the test results, as both the weight ratio and the curing period increase, calcium carbonate, cement, and calcium carbonate+cement specimens showed an increase in the strength. In addition, compared with the strength of the specimen with cement, the strengths of the specimens with mixing ratios of 1:9, 3:7, and 5:5 (carbonate : cement) were found to be 93.5~95.8%, 825.%, 65.2~70.6%.

  • In this study, a blast furnace slag with latent hydraulic property is used to cement granular soils without using Portland cement. When the blast furnace slag reacts with an alkaline activator, it can cement soils. The effect of amounts of blast furnace slag and types of alkaline activator on soil strength was investigated for resource recycling. Four different amounts of slag and six different activators (two naturals and four chemicals) were used for preparing specimens. The specimens were air-cured for 3 or 7 days and then tested for unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The UCS of cemented sand with slag increased, in the order of specimens mixed with potassium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Chemical alkaline activator was better than natural alkaline activator. The maximum UCS of 3-days cured specimens was 3 MPa for 16% of slag with potassium hydroxide, which corresponded to 37% of one with 16% of high-early strength portland cement. As the amount of slag increased, the UCS and dry density of a specimen increased for all alkaline activator cases. As the curing time increased from 3 days to 7 days, the UCS increased up to 97%. C-S-H hydrates were found in the cemented specimens from XRD analyses. Cement hydrates were more generated with increasing amount of slag and they surrounded sand particles, which resulted in higher density.

  • The mechanical behavior of granular soils is affected by particle bonding including natural cementation. This study addresses a simple model of small strain stiffness and salt concentration based on wave measurements of salt-cemented particulate media. Published models of artificially cemented soils with different curing methods and several types of cementation agents are reviewed. Glass beads with the median diameter of D50 = 0.5mm are prepared in rectangular cells using the water-pluviated method in salt water with different concentrations. Piezo disk elements and bender elements embedded in the cell are used for the measurements of compressional and shear waves. The relationships between elastic wave velocities and salt concentration show an exponential function. The measured small strain stiffness matches well the predicted small strain stiffness based on micromechanics for simple cubic monosized sphere particles. This study demonstrates that the salt concentration in salt-cemented specimen may be evaluated by using elastic wave velocities.

  • The physical method used to prevent a landslide has the risk of environmental pollution. Calcite forming bacteria (CFB) have been received increasing attention as a novel and environmental friendly strategy for the soil improvement. In this study, we selected 11 CFB strains with high calcite production. We also examined survivability and calcite productivity of the strains under various stress conditions to select strains with high resistance to various stresses. Two strains was selected by environment stress. Sphingobacterium sp. KJ-32 and Viridibacillus arenosi B-25 precipitate calcite more than other strains at pH 5 and $15^{\circ}C$ respectively. Bio-consolidated soil cakes were made using various calcium salts (calcium chloride, calcium acetate, calcium lactate, calcium gluconate) with mixed culture of 2 strains. Among them, the calcite made using calcium chloride was the largest. These observations demonstrate that this bio-consolidation technology has the potential for eco-friendly prevention of landslide and soil improvement.
