  • Since existing constitutive models developed for confined normal strength concrete overestimate ductility when they are applied to confined high strength concrete, these models cannot be directly applied to confined high strength concrete. In an effort to solve this problem, an accurate stress-strain relationship of the hihg strength concrete needs to be formulated by examining the confinement effects due to increase of the concrete strength. In this study, a constitutive model is developed to express the stress-strain relationship of confined high strength concrete by carrying out regression analysis of the main parameters affection strength and ductile behavior of reinforced high strength concrete columns. Twenty-five test specimens were chosen from the reported experimental studies in the literature. The experimental results of stress-strain relationships of show a good agreement with results of the stress-strain relationships of suggested high strength concrete, covering a strength range between 60 and 124 MPa.

  • To improve fire-resistance of a high strength concrete against spalling under elevated temperature, fibers can be mixed to provide flow paths of evaporated water to the surface of concrete when heated. In this study, the experiment of a column under fire and mechanical loads is conducted and the material model for predicting temperature of reinforcement steel bar and mechanical behavior of fiber-mixed high strength concrete is suggested. The material model in previous studies is modified by incorporating physical behavior of internal concrete and thermal characteristics of concrete at the elevated temperature. Thermo-mechanical analysis of the fiber-mixed high strength concrete column is conducted using the calibrated material model. The performance of the proposed material model is confirmed by comparing thermo-mechanical analysis results with the experiment of a column under fire and mechanical loads.

  • The application of 40MPa high strength concrete was accepted as a goal for improving durability and reducing column's section in concrete bridge piers. As a result of applying 40MPa high strength concrete, it could be achieved that column diameter and coping height were reduced into 0.6m, 0.4m, respectively. And crack by heat evolution of hydration did not generate, because of a careful quality and curing control of high strength concrete.

  • Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFT) system is advantageous because it increases the load-carrying capacity without increasing the size of column. However CFT system has many benefits, it is not applied to field generally because of its heavyweight and difficulty of concrete filling method. As a solution to these problems, we proposed concrete filled steel tube column with hollow made by factory-manufactured PC method. The hollow concrete filled steel tube system is expected to obtain the high strength and high capacity of deformation despite it is a lightweight. This study deals with mechanical properties, strength and deformation, of hollow concrete filled steel tube subjected to axial load. 9 specimens were tested to examine mechanical properties closely, and the following results were obtained: All specimens basically showed higher initial rigidity and maximum strength with increased concrete filling rate. And most specimens showed almost linear behavior until around 80% of maximum strength regardless of filling rate, it is estimated that the elastic range is up to a half of the maximum strength which is the yield strength level.

  • In this study, a prediction model for the effective compressive strength of corner columns with intervening normal strength concrete slabs was developed. A structural analogy between high-strength concrete column-normal strength concrete slab joint and brick masonry was used to develop the prediction model. In addition, the aspect ratio of slab thickness to column dimension was considered in the models. The reliability of the new prediction model was evaluated by comparison with experimental results and its superiority was demonstrated by comparison with previous models proposed by design codes and other researchers. As a result, with average test-to-predicted ratios of 1.09, a standard deviation of 0.15, the newly developed equation provided superior predictions in terms of accuracy and consistency over all of the existing effective strength prediction approaches including KCI structural concrete design code (2012).

  • Recent researches of the fire resistance in concrete focus on how to secure relevant functions in the high strength concrete. However, the demand of normal strength concrete less than 40 MPa takes most of the total concrete demand. Therefore, fire resistance study needs to cover not only high strength concretes but also normal strength concretes. This study evaluated the fire resistance performance of 40 MPa concrete columns, taking the concrete covering thickness and the size of section as variables. Consequently, the fire resistance performance improved as the section size and the covering thickness became larger.

  • In this paper, 18 square CFT columns filled with high-strength concrete were tested under concentric or eccentric axial loading. Two parameters of the experimental program included the buckling length-section depth ratio ($L_K$/D) and the eccentricity of the appled compressive load (e). In additon, mechanical properties such as the compressive concrete strength and compressive and tensile steel strength were measured and incorporated into the material models for the stress-strain relationships of concrete and steel. This model was used in an elasto-plastic analysis in order to predict the behavior of the slender CFT columns. Observtions of the failure mode during the tests under axial loadig were also presented. The strengths obtained from the analysis. Recommendations for Design, and Constructions of CFT structures were presented, as verified by the experimental results.
