  • The o/w emulsions were prepared with saccharide surfactants which were sucrose monostearate(S160), sucrose distearate(S110), and POE(20) methyl glucose stearate(SSE20). And for emulsion the oils used were n-hydocarbon, squalane(SQ), liquid paraffin(LP), octylpalmitate(OP), octylstearate(OS), alkyl benzoate(AB), isostearyl benzoate(ISB). The structures of o/w emulsion droplet were investigated by laser light scattering and the fractal dimensions were calculated from light intensity curves. Increasing of concentration, chain length, and nonpolarity of oils, fractal dimensions of emulsion droplets were found greater. In general fiactal dimensions were varied from 1.7 to 2.8 and its structures were fractal But the fractal dimensions of octadecane( $C_{18}$), 50, and LP emulsified with S110 and S160 were varied from 3.0 to 3.2 and its structures were more dense. The overall fractal dimensions of S110 and S160 were varied from 2.1 to 2.6, that of SSE20 were varied from 1.5 to 2.1. So it was found that the structures of SSE20 system were less compact than that of S110 and S 160 system, because the hindrance effect of polyoxyehtylene group of SSE20 was stronger than that of sucrose of S160. The strucures of emulsion droplets changed according to the nature of emulsifiers and to compositions of oil substances which they contained, and the structures were found similar when the hydophilic moiety of emulsifiers was same.

  • Interfacial interactions and interphases played a key role in multicomponent materials irrespectively of the number and type of their components or their actual structure. They were equally important in particulate filled polymer, polymer blends, fibers-reinforced advanced composites, nanocomposites or biomimetic materials. Recognition of the role of the main factors influencing interfacial adhesion and proper surface modification could lead to significant progress in many fields of research and development, as well as in related technologies. Although the role and importance of interfaces and interphases were the same for all multicomponent materials, the surface modification could be always selected according to the objectives targeted, as well as to the characteristics of the particular system. In this wort therefore, several types of surface modification were performed to improve the interfacial interactions between two components in composite system and their results for the composites were investigated.

  • Present investigation shows the analysis results for ceramic reinforced metal matrix composite under uniaxial transverse tensile loading. The resulting deformation, the projected damage type, and stress-strain behavior were computed depending on microstructure details such as the type of periodic reinforcement array, and the type of interface bonding. A two-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted based on the unit-cell of square, hexagonal, or diagonal periodic away For composite with strong interface bonding, the transverse stress vs. strain curve was generally increased with the increase of the ceramic volume fraction. For the composite with weakly bonded interface, however, the transverse stress vs. strain curve was reduced against the ceramic volume fraction. The decrease was caused by the interface debonding-induced stiffness reduction of the composite. For the composite of weakly bonded interface, the relative reduction rate in the final limit stress for hexagonal array was larger than that for square array. Outcome of the present study was compared favorably with the published literature data.

  • Hot-pressure sintered laminar composites with alumina/zirconia or mullite/zirconia as an outer layer and alumina/zircon (resulting in reaction-bonded mullite/zirconia during sintering) as an inner layer were fabricated by tape casting and lamination. Various forms of crack were observed in sintered laminar composites, these cracks included channel cracks in the outer layer, transverse cracks in the inner layer and interface cracks debonding interlayer. Based on detailed microscopic observations, the cracks were attributed to thermal expansion mismatch between the oxides consisting of the each layer. In particular, the interlayer and transverse cracks were confirmed in the laminates consisted of the mullite/zirconia system as the outer layers, however, those cracks were not observed in the alumina/zirconia system used. In addition, the crack propagation did not exhibit same behavior in the two kinds of outer layer when the indentation load was applied.

  • In soldering of electronic packaging, the research on substituting lead-free solder materials for Pb-Sn alloys has become active due to environmental and health concerns over the use of lead. The reliability of the solder joint is very important in the development of solder materials and it is known that it is related to wettability of the solder over the substrate and microstructural evolution during soldering. It is also highly affected by type and extent of the interfacial reaction between solder and substrate and therefore, it is necessary to understand the interfacial reaction between solder and substrate completely. In order to predict the intermetallic compound (IMC) phase which forms first at the substrate/solder interface during the soldering process, a thermodynamic methodology has been suggested. The activation energy for the nucleation of each IMC phases is represented by a function of the interfacial energy and the driving force for phase formation. From this, it is predicted that the IMC phase with the smallest activation energy forms first. The grain morphology of the IMC at the solder joint is also explained by the calculations which use the energy. The Jackson parameter of the IMC grain with a rough surface is smaller than 2 but it is larger than 2 in the case of faceted grains.

  • Manufacture of nancomposites has simple process for developing nanocomposites due to the increasing applications using nanofillers. This work studied nanofiller coated glass fiber for reinforcing material with good wetting and conductivity and the morphology of nanofiller coated glass fiber was analyzed by FE-SEM. The durability of reinforced glass fiber was investigated with different shapes of nanofillers using sonication rinsing method. Fatigue test was performed to evaluate the adhesion of reinforcing interface and stability of nanofiller coating layer for single fiber reinforced composites. Apparent modulus and conductivity of nanofiller coating layer were evaluated to realize multifunctional of nanocomposites. Fiber type of nanofiller was better than plate type due to better cohesion between fiber and nanofillers. At last, the stability of fiber type nanofiller of coating layer has better durability and conductivity than plate type case.

  • A new evaluation method for the interfacial properties of fibrous composites based on a fragmentation technique is proposed by using the gradual multi-fiber composite, in which the inter-fiber spacing is gradually changed. The results showed that as the inter-fiber distance increased, the aspect ratio of broken fibers decreased while the interfacial shear strength between the fiber and matrix increased. When the reciprocal of the inter-fiber destance was taken for the above relations, both the aspect ratio and interfacial shear strength showed a saturated value. This means that the gradual multi-fiber composite indicates an upper bound in aspect ratio and an upper bound in interfacial shear strength. It was concluded that this fragmentation test could be a new method for composite evaluation, since reducing a difference between these two bounds is effective for composite strengthening. In addition an elastoplastic finite element analysis was carried out to relate the above results with fiber stress a distribution around fiber breaks. It was proved that the bound obtained in the gradual multi-fiber composite test is closely related to stress concentrations caused by a group of multi-fiber breaks.

  • In this work, the electrode far fuel cell was fabricated by mixing carbon blacks with activated carbon fibers (ACFs) in order to form the proper three phase distribution, and then the change of electrode in three phase distribution was investigated. Pt loading yield with ACF content and Pt particle size were determined by AAS and XRD measurements, respectively. And the pore structures, including specific surface area ($S_{BET}$), microporosity, and pore size distribution (PSD) for each electrode were systematically investigated by BET volumetric measurement. The morphology of electrode in three phase distribution was determined by SEM. As an experimental result, it was observed that Pt loading yield was not influenced on the content of ACF. While, the electrode in three phase distribution was largely improved in the case of 30% ACF addition on carbon blacks. These results were probably explained by the increase of the portion of micropores, resulting in increasing the active sites of catalyst.

  • This study evaluated the influence of the type of restoration and the amount of interdental spacing on the stress distribution in maxillary central incisors restored by means of porcelain laminate veneers and direct composite resin restorations. Three-dimensional finite element models were fabricated to represent different types of restorations. Four clinical situations were considered. Type I, closing diastema using composite resin. Labial border of composite resin was extended just enough to cover the interdental space; Type II, closing diastema using composite resin without reduction of labial surface. Labial border of composite resin was extended distally to cover the half of the total labial surface; Type III, closing diastema using composite resin with reduction of labial surface. Labial border of the preparation and restored composite resin was extended distally two-thirds of the total labial surface; Type IV, closing diastema using porcelain laminate veneer with a feathered-edge preparation technique. Four different interdental spaces (1.0, 2.0. 3.0, 4.0 mm) were applied for each type of restorations. For all types of restoration, adding the width of free extension of the porcelain laminate veneer and composite resin increased the stress occurred at the bonding layer. The maximum stress values observed at the bonding layer of Type IV were higher than that of Type I, II and III. However, the increasing rate of maximum stress value of Type IV was lower than that of Type I, II and III.

  • This paper aims at examining the effects of sustained load and elevated temperature on the time-dependent deformation of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets bonded to concrete as well as the pull-off strength of single-lap shear specimens after the sustained loading period using digital images. Elevated temperature during the sustained loading period resulted in increased slip of the CFRP composites, whereas increased curing time of the polymer resin prior to the sustained loading period resulted in reduced slip. Pull-off tests conducted after sustained loading period showed that the presence of sustained load resulted in increased pull-off strength and interfacial fracture energy. This beneficial effect decreased with increased creep duration. Based on analysis of digital images, results on strain distributions and fracture surfaces indicated that stress relaxation of the epoxy occurred in the 30 mm closest to the loaded end of the CFRP composites during sustained loading, which increased the pull-off strength provided the failure locus remained mostly in the concrete. For longer sustained loading duration, the failure mode of concrete-CFRP bond region can change from a cohesive failure in the concrete to an interfacial failure along the concrete/epoxy interface, which diminished part of the strength increase due to the stress relaxation of the adhesive.
