  • The interlaminar fracture behavior of woven laminates under static and cyclic loadings has been studied using DCB(double cantilever beam) specimens. The effects of surface treatment and stiching on the fracture behavior of composite laminates are investigated experimentally. Fracture toughness has been improved by surface treatment because the surface treatment can change the fracture mechanism of laminates. SCB(stitched cantilever beam) model has been proposed to quantify the effect of through-thickness resinforcement(stiching) in improving the delamination crack growth resistance. Distributed loads which are transfered to through-thickness fibers can be calculated by the SCB model. And fracture energy increase due to the distributed load can be predicted by a power function of the distributed load. A new parameter agreed well proposed predict fatigue crack growth rate. The predictions using this parameter agreed well with the experimental data.

  • Fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) and polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are formed in various ways. In particular, FMLs in which aluminum is laminated as a reinforced layer are widely used. Also, glass fiber-reinforced plastics (GFRPs) are generally applied as fiber laminates. The bonding interface layer between the aluminum and fiber laminate exhibits low strength when subjected to hot press fabrication in the event of delamination fracture at the interface. This study presents a simple method for strengthening the interface bonding between the aluminum metal and GFRP layer of FML composites. The surfaces of the aluminum interface layer are engraved with three kinds of patterns by using the laser machine before the hot press works. Furthermore, the effect of the laser patterns on the interfacial toughness is investigated. The interfacial toughness was evaluated by the energy release rate (G) using an asymmetric double cantilever bending specimen (ADCB). From the experimental results, it was shown that the strip type pattern (STP) has the most proper pattern shape in GFRP/Al FML composites. Therefore, this will be considered a useful method for the safety assessment of FML composite structures.

  • The strength of adhesive joints employed in composite structures under cryogenic environments, such as LNG tanks, is affected by thermal residual stress generated from the large temperature difference between the bonding process and the operating temperature. Aramid fibers are noted for their low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and have been used to control the CTE of thermosetting resins. However, aramid composites exhibit poor adhesion between the fibers and the resin because the aramid fibers are chemically inert and contain insufficient functional groups. In this work, electrospun meta-aramid nanofiber-reinforced epoxy adhesive was fabricated to improve the interfacial bonding between the adhesive and the fibers under cryogenic temperatures. The CTE of the nanofiber-reinforced adhesives were measured, and the effect on the adhesion strength was investigated at single-lap joints under cryogenic temperatures. The fracture toughness of the adhesive joints was measured using a Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) test.

  • Graphite and $MoS_2$ were added respectively to the Cu/Sn bond materials of the same composition as a lubricant in order to find out the effect of lubricants on the mechanical properties and the increase in density of the sintered products for microblades. The addition of $MoS_2$ as a lubricant was more beneficial to strength, fracture toughness, and hardness as well as densification than graphite. $MoS_2$ seemed to be more effective in reducing the friction between the metallic powders and die wall during hot pressing process. Due to the better wettability of MoS2 with bond metal alloy, less amount of interfacial defects which is detrimental to mechanical properties use observed.

  • A method of strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics in the adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials was investigated in this paper. Various shapes of adhesively bonded Al/Steel scarf joints focussing on fracture criterion of mixed mode crack were prepared for the static tests. Also, stress intensity factors of the interface cracks in adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials were analyzed with 2-dimensional elastic program of boundary element method(BEM), and the experiment of fracture toughness were carried out under various mixed mode conditions. From the results, the fracture criterion and method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials were proposed.

  • The interfacial zone in concrete materials is extensive, geometrically complex, and constitutes inherently weak zones that limit the concrete performance. Motar-aggregate interfaces play a major role in the fracture processing in concrete composites. Also, the interfacial bond considerably influence mechanical properties of concrete such as modulus of elasticity, strength, and fracture energy, Characterization of the interfacial properties is, therefore, essential to overcome the limitations associated with the interfaces. an objective of this paper is to investigate the corelationship between the fracture toughness of mortar-aggregate interface and the concrete properties such as strengths and elastic moduli. It is observed from the test results that interface fracture toughness is closely related with the compressive strength rather than other properties. At early ages, the development of both tensile strength and elastic modulus are much greater thatn that of both interface fracture toughness and compressive strength.

  • Application of bonded dissimilar materials in various industries are increasing. When these materials are used in structures, it needs to investigate strength evolution applying fracture mechanics. Al/Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials with an interface crack and an interface crack emanating from an edge semicircular hole were prepared for the static tests so that experiment of fracture toughness were carried out. Stress intensity factors of interface cracks in bonded dissimilar materials were computed with boundary element method(BEM) and the fracture criterion of mixed mode crack were analyzed. From the results, the fracture criterion and the method of strength evolution by the fracture toughness in Al/Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials were proposed.

  • Interfacial crack problems between fiber and matrix in composite materials are discussed. A series of interfacial crack initiation and propagation experiments are conducted using the biaxial loading device for various mode-mixes. Normal crack opening displacement (NCOD) is measured near crack front by a crack opening interferometry and used for extracting fracture parameters. From mixed mode interfacial crack initiation experiments, large increase in toughness with shear components is observed. Initial velocity of crack propagation is very dependent upon the mode-mixes. It increased with positive mode-mix due to the increase of stress singularities ahead of crack front and decreased with negative mode-mix resulting from the increase of the degree of compressive stress behind the crack front. Crack propagation was less accelerated with positive mode-mix than the negative mode-mix.

  • The test specimen proposed in this study, named the bimaterial eccentric compression specimen, is a rectangular prism of two dissimilar materials with a notch at their interface. Normalized energy release rates and phase angles were calibrated with the finite element method. The normalized energy release rate increases with notch ratio but decreases with E2/E2, loading point, and phase angle, Bimaterial specimens consisting of mortar and ploymer as well as mortar and rock were prepared and tested to simulate fracture behavior ar the interface. Test results have confirmed that initial notch has significant effect on the apparent interfacial toughness.
