  • In this study, the bisphenol-based DGEBA/GEBS blend systems were studied in cure kinetics, thermal stabilities, and fracture toughness of the casting specimen. The content of DGEBA/DCEBS was varied in 100 : 0, 90 : 10, 80 : 20, 70 : 30, and 60 : 40 wt%. The cure activation energies ($E_a$) of the blend systems were determined by Ozawa's equation. The thermal stabilities, including initial decomposed temperature (IDT), temperatures of maximum rate of degradation ($T_{max}$), and integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) of the cured specimen were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). For the mechanical interfacial properties of the specimens, the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) test was performed and their fractured surfaces were examined by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result, $E_a$, IPDT, and $K_{IC}$ show maximum values in the 20 wt% DGEBS content compared with the neat DGEBA resins. This was probably due to the fact that the elevated networks were farmed by the introduction of sulfonyl groups of the DCEBS resin.

  • The demand for cold-resistant cable material is increasing due to the rapid increase in the development of devices that operate in a low temperature environment. Cold tolerance of a thermoplastic polymer largely depends on the type and content of about 20 or more additives used to make the polymer. The phenomenon of polymer hardening at low temperature can be classified into hardening by simple temperature effect, embrittlement at the glass transition temperature, and hardening by crystallization of polymers that tend to crystallize. In this study, a thermoplastic polymer having a low glass transition temperature, a flame retardant, and an additive were mixed to evaluate the mechanical properties of a thermoplastic polymer composite material for electric wires. It has been confirmed that mechanical properties and processability are determined depending on the additives and compatibilizers added, and this study is considered to be useful as basic data for optimization to meet the performance requirements of wires developed for low-temperature use.

  • The effects of 1 wt.% N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) as a thermal latent initiator and blend compositions composed of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 wt.% of phenol-novolac resin to epoxy resin were investigated in terms of cure kinetics, thermal stabilities and rheological properties. Thermal latent properties of BPH were measured from the conversion as a function of reaction temperature on a dynamic DSC. This cationic BPH system turned out to be an effective thermal latent initiator in the epoxy-phenol curing system. And the increase of phenol-novolac resin concentration led to the decrease in the latent temperature and to the increase of cure activation energy ($E_a$) of the blend system. The thermal stability and activation energy ($E_t$) for decomposition, gel-time and activation energy ($E_c$) for cross-linking from rheometer increased within the composition range of 20~40 wt.% of phenol-novolac resin. This implies that the three-dimensional cross-linking may take place among hydroxyl group within phenol resin, epoxide ring within epoxy resin and BPH.

  • In this work, the cure kinetics and rheological and mechanical properties of diglycidylether of bispheonol A (DGEBA, EP)/polyurethane (PU) blends were investigated. The 1 wt% N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantiminate (BPH) was used as a latent thermal catalyst. Latent properties were performed by measurement of the conversion as a function of reaction temperature using DSC. And the rheological properties of the blend systems were investigated under isothermal conditions using a rheometer. Crosslinking activating energies (Ec) were also determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. The impact strengths were measured as mechanical properties of the casting specimens. The BPH in the blend systems could be an excellent latent thermal catalyst without any co-initiator. The rheological results showed that Ec was highest when PU content was 30 wt% which was in good agreement with the impact strengths. This was probably due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl group in PU and EP, resulting in increasing the crosslinking density.

  • Reactivity and rheological behavior of highly concentrated polymer bonded explosives (PBX) simulant was studied. As a binder, thermosetting hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) was used. By using bimodal $CaCO_3$ (size ratio 10:1) and sugar particles (size ratio 25:1) as fillers, maximum 75 v% filling was possible during melt mixing. The relative viscosities of bimodal suspension were much lower than those of unimodal one and showed minimum values at 0.25 of fine particle fraction. In curing experiment, as curing temperature increased, the time of initiation and completeness of curing reaction became shortened, the torque kept low, and the change of internal temperature decreased.

  • In the present study, the effect of milled glass powder and liquid-type nitrile rubber (NBR) on the thermal stability of phenolic resin and the dynamic mechanical properties of glass braid/phenolic composites has been investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis and dynamical mechanical analysis. It was found that both milled glass power and NBR filled in the waterborne phenolic resin significantly influenced the thermal stability of phenolic resins and the storage modulus and tan delta of the composites. The presence of glass powder increased the thermal stability of the phenolic resin, whereas the presence of NBR resulted in the weight loss in the specific temperature range. The thermal stability of the phenolic resins without and with the fillers was dependent not only on the cure temperature but also on the cure time. The variation of the storage modulus and tan ${\delta}$ of strip-type glass braid/phenolic composites was also influenced with the introduction of glass powder and NBR to the phenolic matrix as well as by the cure conditions given.

  • In this study, the porosity and electrical resistivity of the formed coke produced by sintering the mixture of domestic anthracite and phenolic resin were mainly investigated, when the effect of the amount of binder, the hydration temperature and time, the hardening temperature and time, sintering temperature and time, the particle size of anthracite, the grade of anthracite, and the mixing ratio of phenolic resin on the physical properties of the coke were studied. As a result, It was found that the electrical resistivity and porosity of the formed coke are varied in the range of $0.3\sim1.2\Omega{\cdot}cm$ of $10\sim30%$, respectively, in accordance with the variation of factors.

  • In this study, the fabrication conditions of CFRP rebar were controlled to derive the correlation between flexural strength and pore characteristics. The fabrication conditions of CFRP rebar were adjusted for presence or absence of rib, resin temperature, and curing furnace temperature. Flexural strength and pore characteristics of fabricated CFRP rebar were analyzed. The flexural strength of CFRP rebar was changed depending on the fabrication condition, such as the presence or absence of rib, the resin temperature, and the curing furnace temperature. It was confirmed that the flexural strength of CFRP rebar was significantly lowered when the rib was not wound. As a result of Nano X-ray CT analysis, the max. pore diameter was shown in CFRP rebar prepared at a resin temperature of 60℃. According to optical microscopic analysis, the maximum porosity was 6.89% in No. 1, and the minimum porosity was 2.88% in No. 7. The correlation coefficient between porosity used optical microscopy and flexural strength was -0.64, which was higher than the correlation coefficient between porosity or pore size used Nano X-ray CT and flexural strength.

  • During the curing process of thick glass/epoxy laminates, a substantial amount of temperature lag and overshoot at the center of the laminates is usually experienced due to the large thickness and low thermal conductivity of the glass/epoxy composites. Also, it takes a longer time for full and uniform consolidation. In this work, temperature, degree of cure and consolidation of a 20 mm thick unidirectional glass/epoxy laminate were investigated using an experiment and a 3-dimentional numerical analysis. From the experimental and numerical results, it was found that the experimentally obtained temperature profile agreed well with the numerical one, and the cure cycle recommended by the prepreg manufacturer should be modified to prevent a temperature overshoot and to obtain full consolidation.
