  • This driving simulation study examined the effect of driver's state driving anger(SDA) on collision avoidance(CA) and situation awareness(SA), as well as the moderating effect of driver's positive and negative affect(PA and NA) on the relationship between the driver's SDA and SA. The results showed the followings. First, high SDA group collided with the leading vehicle more frequently than low SDA group. Second, neither the driver's trait driving anger(TDA) nor PA/NA yielded significant changes in SA after SDA was induced. Third, high SDA tended to lower SA but this tendency was observed only when the driver's NA was high. These results suggested that SDA than TDA is a significant deteriorating factor of the driver's SA, and more importantly, SDA should be considered with other affect-relating variable such as NA in explaining the effect of SDA on driver's SA and CA.

  • Previous emotion studies revealed the two core affective dimensions of valence and arousal using affect-eliciting stimuli, such as pictures, music, and videos. Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), a type of stimuli that has emerged recently, produces a sense of psychological stability and calmness. We explored whether ASMR could be represented on the core affect dimensions. In this study, we used three affective types ASMR (negative, neutral, and positive) as stimuli. Auditory ASMR videos were used in Study 1, while auditory and audiovisual ASMR videos were used in Study 2. Participants were asked to rate how they felt about the ten adjectives using five-point Likert scales. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and classification analyses were performed. The results of the MDS showed that distinctions between auditory and audiovisual ASMR videos were represented well in the valence dimension. Additionally, the results of the classification showed that affective conditions within and across individuals for within- and cross-modalities. Thus, we confirmed that the affective representations for individuals could be predicted and that the affective representations were consistent between individuals. These results suggest that ASMR videos, including other affect-eliciting videos, were also located in the core affect dimension space, supporting the core affect theory (Russell, 1980).

  • The purpose of this study empirically examined relationship among affectivity(positive affectivity vs. negative affectivity) and organizational commitment on job satisfaction and work performance of information security professionals. To this end, we conducted a questionnaire survey on 174 information security professionals and analyzed the collected data using structural equation modeling (SEM). It was found that positive affectivity had a positive influences on organizational committment. But negative affectivity was not significantly related to organizational committment. In addition, organizational committment had a positive relationship with job satisfaction and work performance. The results of the empirical study are meaningful to understand the effects of the positive affective aspect of information security professionals on job satisfaction and work performance.

  • This study purported to empirically examine joy expression and its cognitive and social contexts in children's play. The following question was asked: 1) What kind(s) of emotional expression(s) can be considered as a defining feature of play? 2) What cognitive/social play contexts are associated with joy expression. 30 children aged 3, 4, and 5 years were observed in terms of the length of each emotional expression at play/nonplay, and at cognitive/social play categories. The findings of this study showed that regardless of children's age and gender only joy expression could be considered as a defining feature of play, and that R&T play and chase games, or associative and cooperative social play were strongly related to joy expression. The findings were discussed in reference with existing assertions and perspectives, emphasizing the importance of joy expression in defining children's play despite of the predominance of interest expression in play. The findings were also discussed in reference with metacommunication functions and social construction of joy, considering cognitive/social contexts of joy. Implications for play researchers and practitioners were described in terms of developing playful learning strategies for childhood. Limitations of this study, and suggestions for further research were also provided.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effect of perceived parental empathy in the relationship between self-esteem and adolescent depression. A sample of 437 adolescents completed self-report measures of self-esteem, depression and parental empathy. The collected data were analyzed by hierarchical regression analysis. As a result, parental empathy moderated relationship between self-esteem and depression. And awareness of emotion, empathic emotional reaction, and cold emotional reaction of father had moderating effect on the relationship between self-esteem and depression. In case of mother's empathy, cold emotional reaction and excessive emotional reaction had moderating effect on the relationship between self-esteem and depression. The significance of this study is to find out the important of parental empathy for depressive adolescents who are experiencing self-esteem of low level.

  • The regulation of emotion is known to mediate the relationship between emotion-relevant differences in individuals and their life outcomes. This study attempted to include a situational factor in addition to the mediation model and investigated whether this conditional component changed the patterns of indirect effects. The researchers recruited 180 emotional laborers working in diverse domains and used a questionnaire to ascertain their negative affectivity, cognitive reappraisal, emotional exhaustion, and the intensity of negative comments they usually received from customers. The results of the conditional indirect effect analysis revealed the positive indirect influence of negative affectivity on emotional exhaustion through cognitive reappraisal when emotional labors receive highly negative comments from customers (high intensity of the situation). Similarly, negative indirect effects were found when emotional labors receive slightly negative comments from customers (low intensity of the situation). The outcomes of this study suggest that cognitive reappraisal can mediate to decrease emotional exhaustion in contexts that arouse more intensive negative emotions; it can also mediate to increase emotional exhaustion in contexts that arouse less intensive negative emotions. The implications of this study include the importance of integrating individual differences with situational factors. The study also provides information about the distinctiveness of groups of emotional laborers.
