The Collaboration between University and Industry: A Case Study of Chonnam National University focusing on the Technology Transfer (대학과 기업 간의 협력: 기술이전을 중심으로 한 전남대학교의 사례 분석)

  • In the knowledge-based economy the innovation through continuous research and development(R&D) is crucial for the economic development and competitiveness of the region or country. The role of university as an institution which creates and diffuses new knowledge and technology should be highly emphasized these days in that context. This study explores the university-industry collaboration. More specifically, technology transfer and knowledge exchange between a university and external industrial partners are examined and the influences of such activities are, then, evaluated in the aspects of innovation and competitive advantages of the industrial partners. The case study on the Chonnam National University indicates that the considerable amount of knowledge and technology developed within the university tended to transferred to local areas, namely Gwangju and Jeonnam region. It can be claimed that the university, at least Chonnam National University, has positive impacts on the regional economy through technology transfer and knowledge share.

  • Some spread-effects and their dynamics accruing to regional community from the new location of large firms would be an interesting theme in economic geography On the assumption that all firms not only should. have cooperative relations with their regional communities but also try to realize such cooperations in case of locating their facilities, some rationale for their philanthropic activities will be discussed in this paper. The focus of this paper is on the community contributions or philanthropy which are executed as the non-profit motivated activities of firms. Why and how should firms respond to the growing requirements of their communities, and what type of philanthropic activities could be good for their social behavioral contexts are the questions to be solved in this study. It is possible to get some guidelines of a firm's philanthropy through the comparisons on the practices in the three largest firm.5: Kodak. Dupont, and POSCO.

A study on the cooperation of Air Transport between South - North Korea (남북한 항공운송협력에 관한 연구)

  • In 1994, the North Korea indicated their intention to open up airspace. The air route passing through from Daegue FIR to Pyungyang FIR has established in 1996. The air transport cooperation between South and North Korea seemed to be reinforced at the event of President Kim, Dae-Jung's visit to North Korea by passing through a temporarily established Yellow Sea Airway in the year of 2000. The nature characteristics of air transport burdening of many circumstantial situations, however, have kept cooperation between South and North Korea from being facilitated till now. Recently as the more exchange between North and South Korea, the more frequent opportunities to discuss economic cooperation, which in sequence increased political credibility has been increased. The rail, road, and port reconnecting has realized which have been regarded impossible. Furthermore, it is expected to transport personnel and goods through South-North direct connected routes in the near future This study shows several meanings of air transport cooperation between South and North Korea. It will be far beyond simply partial air route connecting in this region, it gives great significance to realize economic cooperation and Northeast hub through air transport industry sector. This will be an exit for air transport industry have suffered limits derived from North Korea troubles and difficulties in growing as Northeast air hub. Namely, South-North air connection denote its meaning in providing opportunities Korea to be Northeast Hub and advanced country having globally competitive air transport industry To develop strategy for air transport cooperation between South and North Korea. they were developed by SWOT analysis on the basis of circumstantial analysis. These strategy need to be commanded properly to the changes of surrounded circumstances. The study result show it is desirable to apply phasal strategies by using strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities factors underlying analysis of inner and outer circumstances to cooperate in air transport sector.

Influencing Factors to Increase the Wage Differentials between Large and Subcontracted Small-Medium Enterprises in Korea (위탁대기업과 협력중소기업 간 임금격차 확대 영향요인)

  • This study aimed to analyze influencing factors to increase the wage differential between large enterprise and subcontracted small-medium enterprises by using panel data composed of 19 manufacturing industries for 16 years from 1999 to 2014. According to the results of analysis, in large enterprises the elasticity of substitution between the labor inputs and the subcontracted product supplies from small-medium enterprises was significantly less than 1. So, the increase in wages of workers of large enterprises, whose degree of employment protection was relatively high, seemed to increase the share of wage cost in total cost and was resulted to decrease the cost share of subcontracted product supplies significantly. This was interpreted to be able to exert a negative influence upon the price of subcontracted product supplies and the wages of workers in subcontracted small-medium enterprises, and, therefore, to increase the wage differentials between large enterprises and subcontracted small-medium enterprises. Furthermore, it was also found that the increases in the labor union participation rate at large enterprises and the openness rate of the industry concerned were contributing to make such effects much stronger significantly. In order to mitigate the wage differentials and the polarizing trend in labor market, we can suggest to establish a certain kind of flexible wage system and to introduce co-bargaining practices with the workers of subcontracted small-medium enterprises within large enterprises, and also for the workers of small-medium enterprises, to prepare new social systems to upgrade their human resources and job skills drastically.

The Concept of Extended Industrial Cluster and Its Policy Directions (광역클러스터 개념의 도입과 정책과제)

  • The concept of industrial cluster began with the agglomeration economies occurring in a small scale place, which are mainly drawn from intense networking between companies, universities, research centers and other institutional bodies. Recently, however, as cooperation between autonomous administrative units and between industrial clusters has been more active than ever, there has emerged the concept of extended industrial cluster (EIC) and, subsequently, policy measures for nurturing it. This study focuses on the concept of EIC, mainly in the perspective of the need to adopt it into the industrial cluster literature. The study identifies the raison d'etre of EIC in the respects of the flexibility of geographic range, complementarity and cooperation between functions and regions, scale economies and productivity, and the development stage of industrial clusters. It also suggests how to establish the concept of EIC in the Korean context and how to apply EIC policy in the Korean industrial policy.

The Effect of Cooperation Network in National Innovation System on Technological Innovation (국가혁신시스템 협력 네트워크가 기술혁신에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to propose creative innovation systems. The effect that cooperation network factors of innovation system in telecommunications sector called typical knowledge industry have on technological innovation was examined. We used the Korea Corporate Innovation Survey (KIS) Data for this study, it has to apply the OECD NESTI-WPIA methodology for probit analysis. The analysis derived the following findings. First, cooperation between the principal innovations in the telecommunication information generally have a positive impact on innovation. Second, cooperation with private institutions have an important role in technological innovation. Third, the various cooperation exerts a positive impact on innovation and has a greater impact on practical innovation in a low creativity level. With this result, it seems that our technological innovation policy should follow a direction of building corporatist-type system to establish cooperation promotion, privately led innovation, and a variety of opinions.
