Deformable models offer an attractive approach for extracting three-dimensional boundary structures from volumetric images. However, conventional deformable models have three major limitations - sensitive to initial condition, difficult to represent complex boundaries with severe object concavities and protrusions, and self-intersective between model elements. This paper proposes a deformable model that is effective to extract geometrically complex boundary surfaces by improving away the limitations of conventional deformable models. First, the proposed deformable model resamples its elements hierarchically based on volume image pyramid. The hierarchical resampling overcomes sensitivity to initialization by extracting the boundaries of objects in a multiscale scheme and enhances geometric flexibility to be well adapted to complex image features by refining and regularizing the size of model elements based on voxel size. Second, the physics-based formulation of our model integrates conventional internal and external forces, as well as a non-self-intersecting force. The non-self-intersecting force effectively prevents collision or crossing over between non-neighboring model elements by pushing each other apart if they are closer than a limited distance. We show that the proposed model successively extracts the complex boundaries including severe concavities and protrusions, neither depending on initial position nor causing self-intersection, through the experiments on several computer-generated volume images and brain MR volume images.
The High-frequency (30 ∼ 120 ㎑) bottom reflection loss at rough water-sediment interface is affected by the gram size distribution of the sediments. The roughness of the bottom surface is represented by "acoustical roughness. g/sub R/" The grain size of sandy sediments is g/sub R/∼O(1) and the dependence as a function of frequency. We suggest the modified bottom reflection loss model (HYBRL model , HanYang university Bottom Reflection Loss model) that include in the deviation of the reflection loss as a function of the grain size distribution and frequency dependence. And bottom reflection loss model of frequency dependence and deviation of bottom properties is verified by water tank and field experiments.

In this study, an analysis technique of hybrid girder considering nonlinearity of steel-concrete contact surface is presented. Steel-concrete hybrid girder shows partial-interaction behavior due to the deformation of shear connectors, slip and detachment at the interface, and cracks under the applied loads. Therefore, the partial-interaction approach becomes more reasonable. Contact surface is modeled by interface element and analyzed nonlinearly because of cost of time and effort to detailed model and analysis. Steel and Concrete are modeled considering non-linearity of materials. Material property of contact surface is obtained from push-out test and input to interface element. For the constitutive models, Drucker-Prager and smeared cracking model are used for concrete in compression and tension, respectively, and a von-Mises model is used for steel. This analysis technique is verified by comparing it with test results. Using verified analysis technique, various analyses are performed with different parameters such as nonlinear material property of interface element and prestress. The results are compared with linear analysis result and analysis result with the assumption of full-interaction.
In this work applicability of a sharp-interface model to well-scale problems is examined. In coastal areas one of the main concerns in groundwater development is saltwater intrusion. To determine the saltwater intrusion at a well one needs to evaluate the saltwater content from a pumping well. We conducted laboratory sand-tank experiments to determine if a sharp-interface model can simulate the saltwater content of a pumping well. Lateral saltwater intrusion experiments and freshwater lens experiments are conducted. A partially penetrating well and a fully penetrating well are used. Comparison between numerical results and observation results indicates that the sharp-interface model can determine saltwater contents reasonably well. We conclude that a sharp-interface model can be applied to well-scale groundwater flow problems in coastal areas.

External bonding of carbon fiber reinforced plastic sheets has recently emerged as a popular method for strengthening reinforced concrete structures. The behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC structure is often controlled by the behavior of the interface between CFRP sheets and concrete. In this study, a review of models on bond strength, bond-slip, and interfacial stresses has been first carried out. Then a new bond-slip model is proposed. The proposed bond-slip model has bilinear ascending regions and exponential descending region derived from modifications mode on the conventional bilinear bond-slip model. The comparison of the results with those of existing experiment researches on bond-slip models indicate good agreements.
In this study, the Disturbed State Concept (DSC) constitutive model is calibrated and modified for steel-sand interface by using the HiS S model for relative intact (Rl) state and the critical state model for the fuBy adjusted (FA) part in the material. The general formulation for implementation is developed. Then, the DSC model with modification for interface is implemented in finite element program based on the generalized Biot's theory. The interface test under one-way monotonic and two-way cyclic loading were numerically simulated using the finite element program modified in this study. The DSC predictions show improved agreement with the observed results from laboratory test. Overall, the computer procedure with the DSC allows relatively improved simulation ofthe soil-structure interaction problems.oblems.

In the numerical simulation of wave fields using a multi-phase flow model that considers simultaneous flows of materials with different states such as gas, liquid and solid, there is need of an accurate representation of the interface separating the fluids. We adopted an algebraic interface capturing method called tangent of hyperbola for interface-capturing(THINC) method for the capture of the free-surface in computations of multi-phase flow simulations instead of geometrical-type methods such a volume of fluid(VOF) method. The THINC method uses a hyperbolic tangent functions to represent the surface, and compute the numerical flux for the fluid fraction functions. One of the remarkable advantages of THINC method is its easy applicability to incorporate various numerical codes based on Navier-Stokes solver because it does not require the extra geometric reconstruction needed in most of VOF-type methods. Several tests were carried out in order to investigate the advection of interfaces and to verify the applicability of the THINC method to wave fields based on the one-field model for immiscible two-phase flows (TWOPM). The numerical results revealed that the THINC method is able to track the interface between air and water separating the fluids although its algorithm is fairly simple.
