  • Interest has increased in academic research regarding key factors that drive box-office success as well as the ability to predict the box-office success of a movie from a commercial perspective. This study analyzed the relationship between key success factors of a movie and box office records based on movies released in 2010 in Korea. At the pre-production investment decision-making stage, the movie genre, motion picture rating, director power, and actor power were statistically significant. At the stage of distribution decision-making process after movie production, among other factors, the influence of star actors, number of screens, power of distributors, and social media turned out to be statistically significant. We verified movie success factors through the application of a Multinomial Logit Model that used the concept of choice probabilities. The Multinomial Logit Model resulted in a higher level of accuracy in predicting box-office success compared to the Artificial Neural Network and Discriminant Analysis.

  • Datasets with small n and large p are often found in various fields and the analysis of the datasets is still a challenge in statistics. Discriminant analysis models for such datasets were recently developed in classification problems. One approach of those models tries to detect dimensions that distinguish between groups well and the number of the detected dimensions is typically smaller than p. In such models, the number of dimensions is important because the prediction and visualization of data and can be usually determined by the K-fold cross-validation (CV). However, in sparse data scenarios, the CV is not reliable for determining the optimal number of dimensions since there can be only a few observations for each fold. Thus, we propose a method to determine the number of dimensions using a measure based on the standardized distance between the mean values of each group in the reduced dimensions. The proposed method is verified through simulations.

  • Physical based water balance model had better simulation results than conceptial model, however it is difficult to obtain input data for the model. This study suggests some methods to obtain parameter values of BROOK90 from meteorological data, soil map, land-use map. Comparing measured and simulated discharge proved the methods to be valid. For validation model($2001{\sim}2003$), comparing measured and simulated discharge a daily mean bias error, Nash-Sutcliffe's model efficiency coefficient, coefficient of determination equal to -0.517, 0.87 and 0.89 respectively. The results of this study would be helpful to the hydrological study using physical based hydrological model not only in super site but in other catchments.

  • The design and analysis of a novel photonic crystal electro-optic modulator are presented in this paper. The device incorporates an electro-optic (EO) polymer slot waveguide into the center of a silicon photonic crystal waveguide. In this device, strong optical confinement in the EO polymer core and small group velocity from the photonic crystal structure provide a surprise enhancement of the EO effect.

  • This paper describes the development of a decision support system (DSS) for the real time reservoir operation that aims to maximize the flood control effect. In the decision support system, model base and real time data processing subsystem are included along with the graphical user interface(GUI) that is able to visualize the forecasted runoff hydrographs at the flood control points and reservoir water levels resulting from the model run as well as the current hydrologic status. The system was verified through the pseudo real time applications to the Taechong reservoir operation with the historical flood events of the Kum river basin occurred in July, 1987 and August, 1995, Decision making processes were performed using the developed system and the results were compared with the real operations at that time. The reservoir operation using the pseudo real time application of DSS were simulated by the flood runoff simulation model, that shows the reservoir operation by DSS were successful in flood control for the lower Kum River.

  • Software development activities are influenced by stochastic theory rather than deterministic one due to having process variability. Stochastic methods factor in the uncertainties associated with project activities and provides insight into the expected project outputs as probability distributions rather than as deterministic approximations. Thus, successful software projects systematically manage and balance five objectives based on historical probability: scope, size, cost, effort, schedule, and quality. Although software size estimation having much uncertainty in initial development has traditionally performed using deterministic methods: LOC(Lines Of Code), COCOMO(COnsructive COst MOdel), FP(Function Point), SLIM(Software LIfecycle Management). This research aims to present a function point method based on stochastic distribution and a case study based on Monte Carlo Simulation applying on an automotive electrical and electronics system software development. It is expected that the result of this paper is used as guidance for establishing of function point method in organizations and tools for helping project managers make decisions correctly.

  • The paper presents an algorithm of selecting optimal locations for measuring displacements(OLD) to adjust cable tension forces during the construction of cable-stayed bridges. The rank for optimal locations can be determined from the effective independence distribution vectors(EIDV) that are computed from the Fisher Information Matrices(FIM) formulated with the displacement sensitivities. To examine the efficiency and reliability of the proposed algorithm for determining OLD, a simulation study on a cable-stayed bridge has been carried out. The results using FIM formulated with displacements are compared with those using FIM with displacement sensitivities through the simulation study. The effects of measurement noise and error in cable length on the adjustment of cable tension forces are evaluated statistically by applying the Monte Carlo scheme.

  • Purpose: The goal of this paper is to present the design and performance of a position encoding circuit for $16{\times}16$ array of position sensitive multi-anode photomultiplier tube for small animal PET scanners. This circuit which reduces the number of readout channels from 256 to 4 channels is based on a charge division method utilizing a resistor array. Materials and Methods: The position encoding circuit was simulated with PSpice before fabrication. The position encoding circuit reads out the signals from H9500 flat panel PMTs (Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., Japan) on which $1.5{\times}1.5{\times}7.0\;mm^3$ $L_{0.9}GSO$ ($Lu_{1.8}Gd_{0.2}SiO_{5}:Ce$) crystals were mounted. For coincidence detection, two different PET modules were used. One PET module consisted of a $29{\times}29\;L_{0.9}GSO$ crystal layer, and the other PET module two $28{\times}28$ and $29{\times}29\;L_{0.9}GSO$ crystal layers which have relative offsets by half a crystal pitch in x- and y-directions. The crystal mapping algorithm was also developed to identify crystals. Results: Each crystal was clearly visible in flood images. The crystal identification capability was enhanced further by changing the values of resistors near the edge of the resistor array. Energy resolutions of individual crystal were about 11.6%(SD 1.6). The flood images were segmented well with the proposed crystal mapping algorithm. Conclusion: The position encoding circuit resulted in a clear separation of crystals and sufficient energy resolutions with H9500 flat-panel PMT and $L_{0.9}GSO$ crystals. This circuit is good enough for use in small animal PET scanners.
