  • The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of soil properties such as liquid limit, water content, etc. on the compression index and to propose the empirical equation of compression index far regional clay and to verify the application Back Propagation Neural Network(BPNN). The compression index values obtained from laboratory tests are in the range of 0.01 to 3.06 for clay soils sampled in eleven regions. As the compare with the results of laboratory test and the predicted compression index value from the proposed empirical equations, the results of empirical equations including single soil parameter have a possibility to be overestimated. Also, the results of empirical equations including multiple soil parameters closed to the measured value more than that of empirical equations including single soil parameter, but the standard error for measured value obtained larger than 0.05. For these reasons, the empirical equations including single or multiple soil parameters proposed base on the results of laboratory test and the determination coefficient is up to 0.89. The result of BPNN shows that correlation coefficient and standard error between test and neural network result is larger than 0.925 and smaller than 0.0196, which means high correlativity, respectively. Especially, the estimated result by neural network, using only three parameters such as natural water content, dry unit weight and in-situ void ratio among various factors is available to the estimation of compression index and the correlation coefficient is 0.974. This result verified the possibility that if BPNN use, the compression index can be predicted by the parameters, which obtained from simplex field test.

  • Traffic accidents on highways are likely to happen when there is an imbalance in the complex relationships among key elements such as road geometries, driver related factors, and mechanical performances. The Demand-Effort Model (DEM), which evaluates highway safety, can be explained by the imbalance, which occurs when the level of demand of the driver's attention to the road environment exceeds that of the response from the driver. This study suggests a new model that improves the reliability of the current DEM through the reinterpretation on the physiological signals with the help of the Neural Network Model (NNM). The data were collected from 149 subjects, who drove a test vehicle on the Yongdong, Honam, and Seohaean Expressways in Korea. Three important results could be drawn from the recursive tests as follows; (1) Only 5 out of 10 parameters on the physiological signals which are currently used were proven to be meaningful through the Normality Test, Cluster Analysis, and Mann-Whitney Analysis. (2) The revised DEM, which internally uses the NNM, showed more reliable results than existing DEM. Group 1, which is based on the new DEM showed 80.0% of accuracy in measuring the level of driver's efforts, however, that of Group 2 based on the current DEM was 74.3%. (3) Field tests on the Honam Expressway showed lower 'type II error' with the new DEM (40.5%) than the old DEM (58.8%). The DEM is designed as a quick and easy way to determine highway safety prior to the minute road safety audit (RSA) by a professional audit team. Then a new DEM, which is based on the NNM, needs to be considered since it showed higher reliability and lower error.

  • It is major strategy for SMEs to cooperate with other companies or Public Research Institutes(PRIs) as the essential technology is getting more complicated and technological life cycle is getting short. However, It is not easy to perform a proper cooperation with SMEs for PRIs, because they are accustomed to support SMEs in the short run. In addition, previous studies also have mainly focussed on finding determinants of performance as a consequence of temporary cooperation instead of long-term relationships among companies. Therefore this study analyzed which satisfaction is more effective to maintain the long-term cooperative relationship between PRIs and SMEs. As a result, it has found that when SMEs satisfy from quality of input like manpower supports R&D and context of the support program over the output like technological or economical performance, they intend to continue cooperation with PRIs. And this paper shows that the performance has mediated effect rather direct effect on long-term cooperation intention. In light of all the above, to cooperate with SMEs effectively, it will be suggested that PRIs enhance quality of support process and contents instead of quantity of support based on one-time cooperation.

  • The Main object of this research is directed to LG Oil company harbor in kwangyang-hang, where various ships ranging from 300 ton to 48000ton DWT use seven berths in the harbor. This harbor suffered from inefficient and unsafe management procedures since it is difficult to set guidelines for arrival and departure of ships according to the weather conditions and the current guidelines dose not offer clear basis of its implications. Therefore, it has long been suggested that these guidelines should be improved. This paper proposes a decision-support system, which can quantitatively decide the possibility of entry or departure on a harbor by analyzing the weather conditions (wind, current, and wave) and taking account of factors such as harbor characteristics, ship characteristics, weight condition, and operator characteristics. This system has been verified using 5$_{th}$ and 7$_{th}$ berth in Kwangyang-hang harbor. Machine learning technique using genetic programming(GP) is introduced to the system to quantitatively decide and produce results about the possibility of entry or arrival, and weighted linear associative memory (WLAM) method is also used to reduce the amount of calculation the GP has to perform. Group of additive genetic programming trees (GAGPT) is also used to improve learning performance by making it easy to find global optimum.mum.

  • The design on a riser in 1MW OTEC system is performed. The minimum diameter of the riser is decided depending on intake quantity of deep-sea water to supply an OTEC cycle. An applicable pipe material is selected from analyzing the properties of commercial pipes. The selected HDPE pipe with the low density and strength is reinforced with a lumped block attached at the end of and wire ropes along the riser. A lumped block, connected to a floating structure by wire ropes, with 25% and 50% weight of a GFRP riser is designed to be attached the end of a riser. The structural safety of the HDPE riser with wire rope supporting axial loads induced by a lumped block is analyzed under the harsh ocean environmental condition near Hawaii ocean with the numerical method. The final dimension of the riser and accessories is determined considering the economic point of view. The designed riser will be applicable to the construction of the 1 MW OTEC pilot plant.

  • Living donor liver transplantation is increasingly performed as an alternative to cadaveric transplantation. Preoperative screening of the donor candidates is very important. The quality, size, and vascular and biliary anatomy of the liver are best assessed with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging or computed tomography (CT). In particular, the volume of the potential graft must be measured to ensure sufficient liver function after surgery. Preoperative liver segmentation has proved useful for measuring the graft volume before living donor liver transplantations in previous studies. In these studies, the liver segments were manually delineated on each image section. The delineated areas were multiplied by the section thickness to obtain volumes and summed to obtain the total volume of the liver segments. This process is tedious and time consuming. To compensate for this problem, automatic segmentation techniques have been proposed with multiplanar CT images. These methods involve the use of sequences of thresholding, morphologic operations (ie, mathematic operations, such as image dilation, erosion, opening, and closing, that are based on shape), and 3D region growing methods. These techniques are complex but require a few computation times. We made a phantom for volume measurement with pig and evaluated actual volume of spleen and liver of phantom. The results represent that our semiautomatic volume measurement algorithm shows a good accuracy and repeatability with actual volume of phantom and possibility for clinical use to assist physician as a measuring tool.

  • The purpose of the present study is first to refine the mathematical material models for moisture and temperature distributions in early-age concrete and then to incorporate those models into finite element procedure. The three dimensional finite element program developed in the present study can determine the degree of hydration, temperature and moisture distribution in hardening concrete. It is assumed that temperature and humidity fields are fully uncoupled and only the degree of hydration is coupled with two state variables. Mathematical formulation of degree of hydration Is based on the combination of three rate functions of reaction. The effect of moisture condition as well as temperature on the rate of reaction is considered in the degree of hydration model. In moisture transfer, diffusion coefficient is strongly dependent on the moisture content in pore system. Many existing models describe this phenomenon according to the composition of mixture, especially water to cement ratio, but do not consider the age dependency. Microstructure is changing with the hydration and thus transport coefficients at early ages are significantly higher because the pore structure in the cement matrix is more open. The moisture capacity and sink are derived from age-dependent desorption isotherm. Prediction of a moisture sink due to the hydration process, i.e. self-desiccation, is related to autogenous shrinkage, which may cause early-age cracking in high strength and high performance concrete. The realistic models and finite element program developed in this study provide fairly good results on the temperature and moisture distribution for early-age concrete and correlate very well with actual test data.

  • Activity durations retain probabilistic and stochastic natures due to diverse factors causing the delay or acceleration of activity completion. These natures make the final project duration to be a random variable. These factors are the major source of financial risk. Extending the Stochastic Project Scheduling Simulation system (SPSS) developed in previous research; this research presents a method to estimate how the final project duration behaves when activity durations change randomly. The final project cost is estimated by considering the fluctuation of indirect cost, which occurs due to the delay or acceleration of activity completion, along with direct cost assigned to an activity. The final project cost is estimated by considering how indirect cost behaves when activity duration change. The method quantifies the amount of contingency to cover the expected delay of project delivery. It is based on the quantitative analysis to obtain the descriptive statistics from the simulation outputs (final project durations). Existing deterministic scheduling method apply an arbitrary figures to the amount of delay contingency with uncertainty. However, the stochastic method developed in this research allows computing the amount of delay contingency with certainty and certain degree of confidence. An example project is used to illustrate the quantitative analysis method using simulation. When the statistical location and shape of probability distribution functions defining activity durations change, how the final project duration and cost behave are ascertained using automated sensitivity analysis method

  • This study evaluated the usefulness of the elasticity score and strain ratio in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant nodules in thyroid elastography. We performed a retrospective analysis based on the results of fine needle aspiration cytology. The Chi-square test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyze the difference between the five degrees of elasticity score and strain ratio according to the benign and malignant thyroid nodules. ROC curve analysis was used to determine the elasticity score and the best cut-off value of the strain ratio for the prediction of malignant nodules. There was a statistically significant difference (p=0.000) between the homogeneity of the elasticity score and the difference of the strain ratio between the benign and malignant nodule groups. On the ROC curve analysis, the elasticity score and the srain ratio for predicting benign and malignant nodules were determined as AUC 0.842, 0.700, cut-off value 3, 2.49 (p=0.001). Therefore, the elasticity score and strain ratio may be useful in the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules.

  • When utilizing a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for tunnelling work, unexpected ground conditions can be encountered that are not predicted in the design stage. These include fractured zones or mixed ground conditions that are likely to reduce the stability of TBM excavation, and result in considerable economic losses such as construction delays or increases in costs. Minimizing these potential risks during tunnel construction is therefore a crucial issue in any mechanized tunneling project. This paper proposed the potential risk events that may occur due to risky ground conditions. A resistivity survey is utilized to predict the risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face during construction. The potential risk events are then evaluated based on their occurrence probability and impact. A TBM risk management system that can suggest proper solution methods (measures) for potential risk events is also developed. Multi-Criterion Decision Making (MCDM) is utilized to determine the optimal solution method (optimal measure) to handle risk events. Lastly, an actual construction site, at which there was a risk event during Earth Pressure-Balance (EPB) Shield TBM construction, is analyzed to verify the efficacy of the proposed system.
