  • The development of strain localization within shear zones is frequently observed during soil deformation. In fact, the phenomenon appears to be more often the norm rather than the exception. Conceptually, any soil condition that renders negative work increment is prone to localization. In this study, a broad range of soil and loading conditions are investigated to test this criterion, including: dilative soil subjected to drained shear (standard case), contractive soil sheared under undrained conditions, cavitation in dilative soil in undrained shear, inhomogeneous soils, particle alignment in contractive soils made of platy particles, soils that experience particle crushing, and the shear of low-moisture and/or lightly cemented loose soils. Unique specimens and test procedures are designed to separately test each of these soil conditions in the laboratory According to experimental test results, soil specimens with post-peak strain softening behavior are prone to progressive failure, localization of deformations, and shear banding. The state of stress, the soil density, inherent mechanical and geometrical properties of soil particles, low water content, and heterogeneity can contribute to triggering strain localization. Considering all possible cases of localization, the best method to obtain the critical state line in the laboratory is to use contractive homogeneous specimens subjected to drained shear.

  • An installation of the construction lift has a few limitations by many constrains and these have influences on labor productivity, that can be changed by vertical-transportation management. In the super-tall building construction, a management of construction lift operation is one of the most important factor, but existing methodologies depend on skilled practitioners' experiences. And it is true that the expertise resulted by the experiences does not transfer to the next generation. This study is a part of lifting-management simulation development which aims at the optimal construction lift management. A proposed algorithm is focus on lifting time calculation considering an acceleration capability. This research evaluates the result accuracy using comparative analysis on simulation result and field measuring time.

  • In this paper, we present a novel deformation method for alleviating the asymmetry of a scanned 3D face considering facial features. To handle detailed areas of the face, we developed a new local 3D shape descriptor based on facial features and surface curvatures. Our shape descriptor can improve the accuracy when deforming a 3D face toward a symmetric configuration, because it provides accurate point pairing with respect to the plane of symmetry. In addition, we use point-based representation over all stages of symmetrization, which makes it much easier to support discrete processes. Finally, we performed a statistical analysis to assess subjects' preference for the symmetrized faces by our approach.

  • This study proposes a technique for the recognition of crack patterns, which includes horizontal, vertical, diagonal($-45^{\circ}$), diagonal($+45^{\circ}$), and random cracks, based on image processing technique and artificial neural network. A MATLAB code was developed for the proposed image processing algorithm and artificial neural network. Features were determined using total projection technique, and the structure(no. of layers and hidden neurons) and weight of artificial neural network were determined by learning from artificial crack images. In this process, we adopted Bayesian regularization technique as a generalization method to eliminate overfitting Problem. Numerical tests were performed on thirty-eight crack images to examine validity of the algorithm. Within the limited tests in the present study, the proposed algorithm was revealed as accurately recognizing the crack patterns when compared to those classified by a human expert.

  • This paper is concerned with the fuzzy control scheme and PID controller for the vibration suppression control of a cantilever beam equipped with a laser sensor and an electromagnetic actuator. The PID controller is being widely used in industrial applications. However, it is difficult to determine the appropriate PID gains in nonlinear systems and systems with time variant characteristic and so on. In this paper, we design the fuzzy based PID controller of which output gains are adjusted automatically and the designed controller is applied to active vibration control of a cantilever beam using electromagnetic actuator with strong nonlinearity. The tuning PID parameters of proposed controller are determined by using Fuzzy algorithm. Effectiveness and performance of the designed controller are verified by both simulation and experiment results. Experimental results demonstrate that better control performance can be achieved in comparison with the PID cotroller.

  • In this study, a method for designing blade pitch and generator torque controllers for a wind turbine generator is presented. This method consists of two steps. First, the Lyapunov stability theory is used to obtain nonlinear control laws that can regulate the rotor speed and the power output at all operating ranges. The blade pitch controller is chosen such that it always decreases a positive definite function that represents the error in rotor speed control. Similarly, the generator torque controller always decreases a positive definite function that reflects the error in power output control. Then, the simulation-based optimization technique is used to tune the design parameters. The controller design procedure and simulation results are presented using the widely adopted two-mass model of the wind turbine.

  • This study presents an extended finite difference method based on moving least squares(MLS) method for solving potential problems with interfacial boundary. The approximation constructed from the MLS Taylor polynomial is modified by inserting of wedge functions for the interface modeling. Governing equations are node-wisely discretized without involving element or grid; immersion of interfacial condition into the approximation circumvents numerical difficulties owing to geometrical modeling of interface. Interface modeling introduces no additional unknowns in the system of equations but makes the system overdetermined. So, the numbers of unknowns and equations are equalized by the symmetrization of the stiffness matrix. Increase in computational effort is the trade-off for ease of interface modeling. Numerical results clearly show that the developed numerical scheme sharply describes the wedge behavior as well as jumps and efficiently and accurately solves potential problems with interface.

  • Digital forensics is the process of proving criminal charges by collecting and analyzing digital evidence which is related to the crime in question. Most digital forensic research is focused on digital forensic techniques themselves or cyber crime. In this paper, we designed a digital forensics-criminal investigation linked model in order to effectively apply digital forensics to various types of criminal investigations. Digital forensic ontology was developed based on this model. For more effective application of digital forensics to criminal investigation we derived specific application fields. The ontology has legality rules and adequacy rules, so it can support investigative decision-making. The ontology can be developed into an intelligent criminal investigation system.

  • We develop the weighted-averaging finite-element method which uses four kinds of element sets. By constructing global stiffness and mass matrices for four kinds of element sets and then averaging them with weighting coefficients, we obtain a new global stiffness and mass matrix. With the optimal weighting coefficients minimizing grid dispersion and grid anisotropy, we can reduce the number of grid points required per wavelength to 4 for a $1\%$ upper limit of error. We confirm the accuracy of our weighted-averaging finite-element method through accuracy analyses for a homogeneous and a horizontal-layer model. By synthetic data example, we reconfirm that our method is more efficient for simulating a geological model than previous finite-element methods.

  • Many Studies of tunnel and tunnelling safety have been developed continuously based on the increasing social interests in underground space since 1990's in Korea. Because the growth of population in metropolitan has been accelerated at a faster pace than the development of the cities, underground facilities have been created as a great extent in view of less land space available. In this study, a lot of types of tunnel failure were surveyed and the detail causes were studied after many cases of tunnel failure were collected. There were suggested brief countermeasure of tunnel failure through case study. An expert system was developed to predict the safety of tunnel and choose proper tunnel reinforcement system using fuzzy quantification theory and fuzzy inference rule based on tunnel information database. The comparison result between the predicted reinforcement system level and measured ones was very similar. In-situ data were obtained in three tunnel sites including subway tunnel under Han river. This system will be very helpful to make the most of in-situ data and suggest proper applicability of tunnel reinforcement system developing more resonable tunnel support method from dependance of some experienced experts for the absent of guide.
