In the present study, a solution algorithm for the computation of unsteady flows on unstructured meshes is presented. Dual time stepping is incorporated to achieve the second-order temporal accuracy while reducing errors associated with linearization and factorization. This allows any time step size, which is suitable for considering physical phenomena of interest. The Gauss-Seidel scheme is used to solve the linear system of equations. A special treatment based on spring analogy is made to handle meshes with high aspect-ratio cells. The present method was validated by comparing the results with experimental data and those obtained from rigid motion.

A metal-coated FBG (fiber Bragg grating) sensor has a memory effect, which can recall the maximum strains experienced by the structure. In this study, a nickel-coated FBG sensor was fabricated through electroless (i.e., chemical plating) and electroplating. A thickness of approximately $43{\mu}m$ of a nickel layer was achieved. Then, we conducted cyclic loading tests for the fabricated nickel-coated FBG sensors to verify their capability to produce residual strains. The results revealed that the residual strain induced by the nickel coating linearly increased with an increase in the maximum strain experienced by the sensor. Therefore, we verified that a nickel-coated FBG sensor has a memory effect. The fabrication methods and the results of the cycle loading test will provide basic information and guidelines in the design of a nickel-coated FBG sensor when it is applied in the development of structural health monitoring techniques.

A simple but efficient grid generation technique by using the modified compressible form of stream function has been formulated. Transformation of a physical plane to a streamline plane, the Von Mises Transformation, has been widely used to solve the differential equations governing flow phenomena, however, limitation arises in low velocity region of boundary layer, mixing layer and wake region where the relatively large grid spacing is inevitable. Modified Von Mises Transformation with simple mathematical adjustment for the stream function is suggested and applied to solve the confined coaxial turbulent jet mixing with simple $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. Comparison with several experimental data of axial mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds shear stress distribution shows quite good agreement in the mixing layer except in the centerline where the turbulent kinetic energy distributions were somewhat under estimated. This formulation is strongly suggested to be utilized specially for free turbulent mixing layers in axisymmetric flow conditions such as the investigation of mixing behavior, jet noise production and reduction for Turbofan engines.

We simulate an emulsion system under simple shear rates to analyze its rheological characteristics using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). We calculate the relative viscosity of an emulsion under a simple shear flow along with changes in temperature, shear rate, and surfactant concentration. The relative viscosity of emulsions decreased with an increase in temperature. We observed the shear-thinning phenomena, which is responsible for the inverse proportion between the shear rate and viscosity. An increase in the interfacial tension caused a decrease in the relative viscosity of the decane-in-water emulsion because the increased deformation caused by the decreased interfacial tension significantly influenced the wall shear stress.
According to the target object for designer to sketch, an effective style or shape of input device can be defined differently. The general spatial sketching system that support various types of wand assist sketching effectively as changing suitable wand shape to the part of a target object. We suggest the idea of changing wand style by altering the posture of a 3D wand. This allows a designer to work in an intuitive way without being interrupted by complicated menus. We implement the various wand styles to the spatial sketching system with cubic-based drawing technique.

High velocity impacts are accompanied with large deformations, which generate a large amount of heat due to plastic works, resulting in a significant temperature rise of the material. Because the elevated temperature affects the dynamic properties of materials, it is important to predict the temperature rise during high-stram-rate deformations. Both existing vacancies and excess vacancies are credited to the stored energy, yet it is difficult to distinguish one from another in contribution to the stored energy using macroscopic level materials models. In this study, an atomistic material model for fee materials such as copper is set up to calculate the stored energy using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It is concluded that excess vacancies play an important role for the stored energy during a high-strain-rate deformation.

A three-dimensional numerical model is employed to investigate wave deformation due to a submerged structure. The three-dimensional numerical model solves the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations for two-phase flows. The LES(large-eddy-simulation) approach is adopted to model the turbulence effect by using the Smagorinsky SGS(sub-grid scale) closure model. The two-step projection method is employed in the numerical solutions, aided by the Bi-CGSTAB technique to solve the pressure Poisson equation for the filtered pressure field. The second-order accurate VOF(volume-of-fluid) method is used to track the distorted and broken free surface. A simple linear wave is generated on a constant depth and compared with analytical solutions. The model is then applied to study wave deformation due to a submerged structure and the predicted results are compared with available laboratory measurements.
