Radiation Crosslinking and Shrinkable Properties of PVC (PVC의 방사선 가교와 열수축 특성)

  • PVC was compounded with various crosslinking agents, plasticizers and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber(NBR) to evaluate their effects on the radiation gel percent, elongation at break, heat distortion and heat shrinkage. Gel yield of PVC increased with increasing unsaturation levels per molecular weight of crosslinking agents while PVC containing NBR was more sensitive to crosslinking than PVC itself regardless of the types of crosslinking agents and plasticizers. It was found that gel percent was increased with increasing radiation dose, while heat distortion was decreased with increasing gel percent. Heat shrinkage was increased with decreasing stretching temperature and increasing annealing temperature.

Oil Gelling Agents made from Polyurethane by One-Shot Method (One-Shot법을 이용한 폴리우레탄계 유겔화제의 특성)

  • Polyurethane NCO prepolymers were synthesized with the polyols such as PTMG, GP and the isocyanate such as TDI at $40^{\circ}C$ for 8.5 minutes. As average molecular weights (${\bar{M_n}}$: 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000) of PTMG, and GP were decreased from 4000 to 1000, ratio of oil gelation increased from 298%, to 440%, for Bunker B. When oil and water were emulsified, the ratio of gelation was increased approximately two times. Ratio of gelation for emulsive Bunker B was increased from 402% to 910%, for PTMG1000 and increased from 440%, W 958% for GPI1000. Ratio of oil gelation for emulsive Bunk C which has higher viscosity than Bunker B was measured w 923% for PTMG1000 made with chain extender, i.e. EG, and measured to 1098% for GP1000. The gel made from GP which has three functional group showed soft and strong characteristic, as a result, it can be removed easily from oil spilled ocean.

  • Oil gelling agent was synthesized with PPG, PTMG and TDI at 7$0^{\circ}C$ for 4hours. PPGs and PTMGs having various average molecular weights (M$_{n}$: 1000, 2000, 3000) were employed to investigate the ratio of oil gelation and water gelation. As M$_{n}$ of PPG, in result, was decreased from 3000 to 1000, the ratio of oil gelation was increased from 130% to 290% for PPG and from 250% to 310% for PTMG. Ratio of oil gelation was increased approximately two times when EG was added. As the amount of hydrophilic compound in the prepolymer was increased, ratio of oil gelation was increased from 290% to 1120% for PPG and increased from 310% to 1310% for PTMG, due to the increased dispersion of prepolymer in the water/oil mixture.ure.

  • In this study, hydrogels from mixtures of chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan/poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) were prepared by ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation, and the mechanical properties such as gelation, water absorptivity and gel strength were examined to evaluate the applicability of these for wound dressing. The PVA : chitosan and PVP : chitosan ratio were in the range of 97:3 ~ 90:10, and the solid concentration of PVA/chitosan and PVP/chitosan solution were 15 wt%. Gamma irradiation with doses of 25, 35, 50, 60 and 70 kGy, was exposed to mixtures of PVA/chitosan and PVP/chitosan to evaluate the effect of irradiation dose. Gel content and gel strength increased as chitosan concentrations in PVA/chitosan and PVP/chitosan decreased, and as irradiation dose increased. Swelling degree increased as chitosan concentrations in PVP/chitosan and PVA/chitosan increased, and as irradiation dose decreased.

  • Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels were prepared by the irradiation and heating. Irradiation and heating processes were carried out to improve the heat resistance of PVA hydrogels at high temperature. The physical properties such as gel content, degree of swelling and gel strength for the synthesized hydrogels were examined. The structure variations were investigated using the following techniques: differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Gel content and gel strength of the hydrogels were higher when the two steps of irradiation followed by heat treatment were used rather than only with the irradiation. The hydrogels prepared by the irradiation and the two steps had good heat resistance at high temperature.

  • Hydrogels for wound dressing were manufactured using poly(vinylalcohol)(PVA) and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)(PVP). The hydrogels were obtained by exposing to $^{60}$ Co${\gamma}$-rays after freezing and thawing of aqueous solutions of PVA and PVP to improve mechanical strength. Mechanical properties such as gelation, water absorptivity and gel strength were examined after repeating the \"freezing and thawing\" of PVA/PVP hydrogels, and then irradiating them at 40 kGy. The PVA/PVP ratio was in the range of 30:70 ~ 100:0, and the solid concentration of PVA/PVP was 20 wt%. The gelation and strength of hydrogels were much higher when \"freezing and thawing\" and the irradiation process were used than when only the irradiation process was utilized.   • In this study, hydrogels from mixtures of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)/glycerin/chitosan were prepared by γ-ray irradiation and the mechanical properties such as gelation, water absorptivity, and gel strength were examined to evaluate the applicability of these for wound dressing. Then PVA:PVP was weight ratio of 6 : 4, the concentration of chitosan was 0.3 wt%, the concentration of glycerin was in the range of 0∼5 wt%t. The solid concentration of PVA/PVP/glycerin/chitosan solution was 15 wt%. Gamma irradiation doses of 25, 35, 50, and 60 kGy were exposed to a mixture of PVA/PVP/glycerin/chitosan to evaluate the effect of irradiation dose. Gel content and gel strength increased as glycerin concentration in PVA/PVP/glycerin/chitosan decreased, and as irradiation dose increased. Swelling degree increased as glycerin concentration in PVA/PVP/glycerin/chitosan increased, and as irradiation dose decreased. The glycerin in PVA/PVP/glycerini/chitosan hydrogel prevented the transformation of shape. These hydrogel dressings had better curing effect than vaseline gauge.

Preparation of High Molecular Weight Atactic Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogel by Electron Beam Irradiation Technique (전자빔 조사를 이용한 고분자량 혼성배열 폴리(비닐 알코올) 수화젤의 제조)

  • High molecular weight poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to be expected as a candidate material for the wound-dressing was successfully prepared by electron beam (EB) irradiation. To produce PVA hydrogels with various gel fractions, degrees of swelling in water, gel strengths, and elongations, two different number-average degrees of polymerization [($P_n$)s] of PVA were adapted such as 1700 and 4000, and the PVA solution concentration and irradiation dose of EB were controlled to range of 5 $\sim$ 20% and 30 $\sim$ 100 kGy, respectively. The gel fraction and strength of PV A hydrogel were increased with increasing molecular weight of PVA, solution concentration, and irradiation dose of EB. On the contrary, the degree of swelling and elongation of PVA hydrogel were decreased. The thermal property and crystallinity related to degree of crosslinking of PVA hydrogel were examined by the analyses of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction.

  • Tablets were conventionally used to treat choline urticaria. Disadvantages of tablets included sleep inducing problems, accessibility and reduced dosage. To address this, hydrogel containing Cetirizine HCl was manufactured. The experimental method was to measure viscosity, gel fraction, degree of swelling, content evaluation, and permeability. Studies have shown that hydrogels containing Cetirizine HCl can be directly applied to occurrence area to improve Cholinergic urticaric with minimal side effects associated with the marketable tablets. This hydrogel includes other important substances including steroids which gives it an advantage when applied on the skin, improving its accessibility. In addition, it is expected that the drug manufacturing process will be able to proceed as this hydrogel is effective even when used alone.

Effect of Barley ${\beta}-Glucan$ on Dynamic Viscoelasticity of Barley Starch (${\beta}-Glucan$이 보리 전분의 동적점탄성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of ${\beta}$-glucan, prepared from waxy barley, on the dynamic viscoelasticity of nonwaxy and waxy barley starch during gelatinization and gelation was studied. Although no significant effect was observed on waxy starch, there were drastic changes in the dynamic viscoelasticity of nonwaxy starch. The gelatinization onset temperature of nonwaxy starch shifted to a higher temperature and showed a drastic increase in storage modulus and loss modulus at the range of $80{\sim}90^{\circ}C$. During the gelation of nonwaxy starch, ${\beta}$-glucan increased the rate of gel formation and weakened the network of starch and amylose by prohibiting their association. Therefore, we proved that there was no specific interaction between amylose and ${\beta}$-glucan. The addition of ${\beta}$-glucan to waxy starch seemed to have no effect of waxy starch.
