We carried out the Suspension PS log and gamma-gamma log in andesite and sedimentary rocks distributed near the area of Myodo-dong, Yeosu. The main purpose of this study was to find out the distribution of seismic velocities and densities and to analyze the correlation of the two rocks by comparing their geophysical well logs with rock cores. The distributions of P and S-wave velocities for two rocks represented in the study area showed a difference of about 2,000 m/sec and 1,500 m/sec with depth, respectively, while the distributions of densities had a discrepancy of about $0.35g/cm^3$ with depth. However, the results of geophysical well logs analysis were similar to the two rocks. Consequently, it is clear that these results are interpreted as a difference due to weathering rather than rock type. In particular, the RQD values showed a good correlation to geophysical well log data.

Subsurface rock produces heat from the decay of radioactive isotopes in constituent minerals and gamma-ray emissions, of which the magnitude is dominated by the contents of the major radioactive isotopes (e.g., U, Th, and K). The heat production is generally calculated from the rock density and contents of major isotopes, which can be determined by mass spectrometry of drilled core samples or rock fragments. However, such methods are not easily applicable to deep boreholes because core samples recovered from depths of several hundred meters to a few kilometers are rarely available. A geophysical logging technique for boreholes is available where the U, Th, and K contents are measured from the gamma-ray spectrum. However, this technique requires the density to be measured separately, and the measurement depth of the equipment is still limited. As an alternative method, a normal gamma-ray logging tool was adopted to estimate the heat production from the total gamma activity, which is relatively easy to measure. This technical report introduces the development of the proposed method for evaluating the heat production of a granitic rock mass with domestic commercial borehole logging tools, as well as its application to a ~2 km deep borehole for verification.
Well logging technologies are used to measure the physical properties of reservoirs through boreholes. These technologies have been utilized to understand reservoir characteristics, such as porosity, fluid saturation, etc., using equations based on rock physics models. The analysis of well logs is performed by selecting a reliable rock physics model adequate for reservoir conditions or characteristics, comparing the results using the Archie's equation or simandoux method, and determining the most feasible reservoir properties. In this study, we developed a joint inversion algorithm to estimate physical properties in shaly sandstone reservoirs based on the pre-existing algorithm for sandstone reservoirs. For this purpose, we proposed a rock physics model with respect to shale volume, constructed the Jacobian matrix, and performed the sensitivity analysis for understanding the relationship between well-logging data and rock properties. The joint inversion algorithm was implemented by adopting the least-squares method using probabilistic approach. The developed algorithm was applied to the well-logging data obtained from the Colony gas sandstone reservoir. The results were compared with the simandox method and the joint inversion algorithms of sand stone reservoirs.
Care should be taken when performing the P and S wave velocity loggings. Some of them are the effect of casing that is installed to prevent the borehole collapsing when the drilling is done on the loose ground such as soil and/or soft rock, and the discrepancy of the velocities of the same media according to the difference of the source wave frequency spectrum. To overcome these difficulties, the following suggestions are recommended; (1) try a careful drilling technique that can eliminate the necessity of the casing, and (2) apply the logging methods with the proper frequency spectrum that is appropriate to the object of the velocity logging.
The qualitative distribution of a fractured aquifer was characterized by electrical resistivity surveying as a part of basic groundwater investigation in Jangseong. The results were then used to choose sites for observation wells. The locations and distributions of permeable discontinuities were studied by analyses of temperature logs, a borehole image-processing system (BIPS), and hydraulic pressure testing using a double packer. The pressure test showed that the size of the discontinuities correlated with the Lugeon value and the results of the temperature log. The results show that temperature measurement is an effective method to identify permeable discontinuities, with the temperature difference correlating with the size of the aperture of the discontinuity.
Seismic waveform estimation is based on the assumption that the seismic trace tying a well is one dimensional convolution of the propagating seismic waveform and the reflectivity series derived from well logs (sonic and density). With this assumption, the waveform embedded in a seismic trace can be estimated using a Wiener match filter. In this paper, I experimented a preprocessing procedure that applies both on the seismic trace and on the reflectivity series. The procedure is based on the assumption that the travel time can be estimated better from the seismic trace and that the instantaneous reflectivity values can be measured better on the well log. Thus the procedure is, 1) start-time adjustment and dynamic differential stretches are applied on the sonic log, and 2) seismic amplitudes are balanced such that the low frequency part of the seismic are matched to that of the reflectivities derived from well logs.
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging has become an important technique for formation evaluation, detecting interaction signals between H protons and applied magnetic fields. Measured decay signals called relaxation, contain important information about density of H protons and different decay rate due to its fluid type in the sensitive area. Thus, petrophysical information such as porosity, permeability and wettability can be estimated through the interpretation of the decay signals. Many researches on random walk simulation have been published, since a simulation method based on random walk for solving exponential decays was adapted in the early of 1950. This study first makes a review on NMR simulation researches, explains two most important methods: simulation with or without considering magnetic field gradient. Lastly, the study makes a comparison between NMR simulation responses with and without magnetic field gradient to show the importance to consider magnetic gradient to analyze the effects of magnetic gradients on NMR responses.
Slowness time coherence (STC) technique has been applied to 3-receiver slim hole sonic log using 3 NX sized concrete model holes of different physical properties. We analyzed the effects of different source center frequencies on the wave forms, their amplitude spectra, and their STC results. We could determine the sonic velocity of each mode accurately by the application of STC method with the semblance projection and efficient selection of center frequency. Theoretical model and experimental model hole studies indicate that 4-receiver condition is the most ideal for STC in near surface slim hole sonic log. The result also indicates that favorable STC result can be obtained from three-receiver sonic log provided with the help of the first arrival picking method.
