  • An exact distribution of the test statistic to test for multiple outlier candidates does not generally exist; therefore, tests of individual outliers (or tests using simulated critical-values) are usually conducted instead of testing for groups of outliers. This article is on procedures to test outlying observations. We suggest a method that can be applied to arbitrary observations or multiple outlier candidates detected by an outlier detecting method. A Monte Carlo study performance is used to compare the proposed method with others.

  • National interest in nuclear safety continues to increase. One of the policies that the government is pursuing is to change a temporary position to a permanent position for irregular special security guards of Nuclear power plants. At this point in time, it is urgent to discuss the method of their physical fitness test because duties of special security guards such as arrest and self-defense, unarmed defensive tactics, proficiency with semiautomatic rifle, etc, demands a lot of physical fitness. The purpose of this study is to analyze the physical fitness tests of police, firefighters and soldiers in Korea, US and Japan through literature review. After that, a new fitness test method suitable for special security guards of nuclear power plants was derived through expert meetings. This study also suggested a guideline to analyze the fitness test results so that the developed fitness method can be introduced to the field. For this purpose, physical fitness tests were conducted on 74 subjects. Based on the results of the experiment, the expected records of special security guard fitness tests were presented.

  • Nonparametric procedures in a randomized block design was proposed by Friedman (1937) as a general alternative as well as suggested as a test for ordered alternatives by Page (1963). These methods are used for the rank of treatments in each block. In this paper, we proposed nonparametric procedures using aligned method proposed by Hodges and Lehmann (1962) to reduce among block information and based on placement suggested by Kim (1999) in a randomized block design. We also perform a Monte Carlo study to compare the empirical powers of the proposed procedures and established method.

  • This paper proposes an efficient edge detection using Van der Waerden statistic in original and noisy images. An edge is where the intensity of an image moves from a low value to a high value or vice versa. We describe a nonparametric Wilcoxon test and a parametric T test based on statistical hypothesis testing for the detection of edges. We use the threshold determined by specifying significance level $\alpha$, while Bovik, Huang and Munson consider the range of possible values of test statistics for the threshold. From the experimental results of edge detection, the T and Wilcoxon method perform sensitively to the noisy image, while the proposed Waerden method is robust over both noisy and noise-free images under $\alpha$=0.0005. Comparison with our statistical test and Sobel, LoG, Canny operators shows that Waerden method perform more effectively in both noisy and noise-free images.

  • We study problems of sample size determination for one-sample location tests. A simulation study shows that sample size calculations based on approximated distribution do not achieve the nominal level of power. We investigate sample size determinations based on exact distribution and with a power that attains the nominal level.

  • The bootstrap method for the score test statistic is proposed in a bivariate negative binomial distribution. The Monte Carlo study shows that the score test for testing overdispersion underestimates the nominal significance level, while the score test for "intrinsic correlation" overestimates the nominal one. To overcome this problem, we propose a bootstrap method for the score test. We find that bootstrap methods keep the significance level close to the nominal significance level for testing the hypothesis. An empirical example is provided to illustrate the results.

  • Log-rank is widely used for testing equality of two survival functions, and this method is efficient only under the proportional hazard assumption. However, crossing survival functions are common in practice. Therefore, many approaches have been suggested to test equality of them. This study considered several methods; Renyi type test, modified Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramer-von Mises test, and weighted Log-rank test, which can be applied when the survival functions cross, and simulated power of those methods. Based on the simulation results, we provide the useful information to choose a suitable approach in a given situation.

  • An important problem in frequency analysis is the estimation of the quantile for a certain return period. In frequency analysis an assumed probability distribution is fitted to the observed sample data to estimate the quantile at the upper tail corresponding to return periods which are usually much larger than the record length. In most cases, the selection of an appropriate probability distribution is based on goodness of fit tests. The goodness of fit test method can be described as a method for examining how well sample data agrees with an assumed probability distribution as its population. However it gives generally equal weight to differences between empirical and theoretical distribution functions corresponding to all the observations. In this study, the modified Anderson-Darling (AD) test statistics are provided using simulation and the power study are performed to compare the efficiency of other goodness of fit tests. The power test results indicate that the modified AD test has better rejection performances than the traditional tests. In addition, the applications to real world data are discussed and shows that the modified AD test may be a powerful test for selecting an appropriate distribution for frequency analysis when extreme cases are considered.

  • This paper deals with a normality test to determine whether the data are sampled from normal population or not. In this paper the property that the mean and variance are independently distributed only for the normal distribution is used as a basis for developing a new test using the simple regression analysis. Considering the redan and variance of a random sample as independent and dependent variables, if it has not the regression relationship we conclude that the data were sampled from the normal distribution. The Monte-Carlo power study shows that the new test using the simple regression analysis has good power property relative to 6 well-known test methods for 11 distributions.
