  • Ectopic eruption is out of a normal position by local eruption disturbance in the developing permanent molar. The prevalence of ectopic eruption is reported to be the between 2 and 6%, most often associated maxillary first permanent molar whereas, the occurrence for the mandibular is quite rare. The etiologic factors of ectopic eruption are inadequate arch length, lack of growth in the posterior region of the jaw, mesially inclined eruption path of first permanent molars, abnormally large first permanent molars, hereditary factor and a stainless steel crown which has been improperly restored. Ectopic eruption can be treated by the use of brass wire, separating elastics, distal disking and Humphrey appliance and the use of removable appliance and cervical traction headgear after extraction of the second primary molar. This case was that lower right first permanent molar was mesially tilted state by locking on the stainless steel crown of a lower right second primary molar. The stainless steel crown was removed and Humphrey appliance was set. Like this case, ectopic eruption could be happened by the stainless steel crown which improperly restored. In restoration of the stainless steel crown, selection of proper size, trimming and contouring are very important.

  • Radicular cyst is a true epithelium lined cyst formed when epithelium at the apex of a nonvital tooth is stimulated by inflammation. It is the most common type of cyst in the oral cavity, but its frequency is low in the primary dentition. Treatment of large-sized cyst aims at conservation of adjacent structure and allowance of proper eruption of the successive permanent teeth in the primary dentition. Considering these two aspects, marsupialization or enucleation following decompression is recommended as a treatment means for large-sized radicular cyst. In this case, 8-year old boy visited the pediatric dentistry department. Yonsei University Dental Hospital, with the chief complaint of pain on the lower right area. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed periapical radiolucent lesion on #84, which had previous pulp treatment and restorated with the stainless steel crown. Dislocation of its successive tooth, #44, was also observed. #84 was extracted and sent for biopsy. Through histologic examination, it was diagnosed as radicular cyst. Following its extraction, removable space maintainer was delivered, which was also used as a decompressor. During periodic check-up for next 22 months, favorable healing of the lesion and eruption of the successive tooth were observed.

  • In this study, a finite element analysis and a vibration test were performed to estimate the natural frequencies of mouse femurs with osteoporosis. Three groups of the femurs include the osteoporotic group, the treated group and the normal group. For the finite element analysis, the micro finite element model of the femur was reconstructed using the Micro-CT images and the Voxel mesh generation algorithm. In the vibration test, the natural frequencies were measured by the mobility test. from the results, the averaged natural frequencies in the osteoporotic group were the highest, followed by those in the treated group. The finite element models were validated within 15% errors by comparing the natural frequencies in the finite element analysis with those in the vibration test. The developed Micro-CT system, the Yokel mesh generation algorithm, the presented finite element analysis, and vibration test could be useful for the investigation of the structural change of the bone tissue, and the diagnosis and the treatment in the osteoporosis.

  • It is well recognized that damage resulting from freeze-thaw cycles is a serious problem causing deterioration and degradation of concrete. In general, freeze-thaw cycles change the microstructure of the concrete ultimately leading to internal stresses and cracking. In this study, a new method for one-sided stress wave velocity measurement has been applied to evaluate freeze-thaw damage in concrete by monitoring the velocity change of longitudinal and surface waves. The freeze-thaw damage was induced in a $400{\times}350{\times}100mm$ concrete specimen in accordance with ASTM C666 using s commercial testing apparatus. A cycle consisted of a variation of the temperature from -14 to 4 degrees Celsius. A cycle takes 4-5 hours with approximately equal times devoted to freezing-thawing. Measurement of longitudinal and surface wave velocities based on one-sided stress wave velocity measurement technique was made every 5 freeze-thaw cycle. The variation of longitudinal and surface wave velocities due to increasing freeze-thaw damage is demonstrated and compared to determine which one is more effective to monitor freeze-thaw cyclic damage progress. The variation in longitudinal wave velocity measured by one-sided technique is also compared with that measured by the conventional through transmission technique.

  • Recently, much attention has been paid to nonlinear ultrasonic technology as a potential tool to assess hidden damages that cannot be detected by conventional ultrasonic testing. One nonlinear ultrasonic technique is measurement of the resonance frequency shift, which is based on the hysteresis of the material elasticity. Sophisticated measurement of resonance frequency is required, because the change in resonance frequency is usually quite small. In this investigation, the nonlinear electromagnetic acoustic resonance (NEMAR) method was employed. The NEMAR method uses noncontact electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) in order to minimize the effect of the transducer on the frequency response of the object. Aluminum plate specimens that underwent three point bending fatigue were tested with a shear wave EMAT. The hysteretic nonlinear parameter ${\alpha}$, a key indicator of damage, was calculated from the resonance frequency shift at several levels of input voltage. The hysteretic nonlinear parameter of a damaged sample was compared to that of an intact one, showing a difference in the values.

  • Failure analysis and heat-resistant were performed for an electric fuel pump that is installed in the fuel tank to transfer fuel to the engine of combat vehicles. The fuel pump with a DC motor was disassembled and inspected to determine the cause of failure. The failure phenomenon was classified into three categories based on observations of the inside of the housing: burnt winding, quick brush abrasion, and fuel leak into the pump. Based on the inspection results, it was estimated that overheating was the main cause of failure. The thermal test was conducted under the no-load condition in 24 hours, and the thermal sensor was installed on the stator surface and the brush holder to check the possibility of damage to the winding due to overheating. When the ambient temperature of the fuel pump was set to 68 ℃, the stator temperature increased to 135.9 ℃, and the winding of the motor was almost damaged. The test results confirmed the lack of heat resistance of fuel pump windings, and suggested that the type F of insulation class (below 155 ℃) of the windings and varnish should be replaced with type C or higher that can be used above 180 ℃.

  • The bogies of railway vehicles are one of the most critical components for service. Fatigue defects in the bogie can be initiated for various reasons, such as material imperfection, welding defects, and unpredictable and excessive overloads during operation. To prevent the derailment of a railway vehicle, it is necessary to evaluate and detect the defect of a connection weldment between the car body and bogie accurately. The safety of the bogie weldment was checked using an ultrasonic test, and it is necessary to determine the occurrence of defects using a learning method. Recently, studies on deep learning have been performed to identify defects with a high recognition rate with respect to a fine and similar defect. In this paper, the databases of weldment specimens with artificial defects were constructed to detect the defect of a bogie weldment. The ultrasonic inspection using the wedge angle was performed to understand the detection ability of fatigue cracks. In addition, the convolutional neural network was applied to minimize human error during the inspection. The results showed that the defects of connection weldment between the car body and bogie could be classified with more than 99.98% accuracy using CNN, and the effectiveness can be verified in the case of an inspection.

  • Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia and is caused by mutation in the CBAFA1 gene of 6p21 chromosome band. Patients with CCD express skeletal dysplasia such as hypoplastic/aplastic clavicle, brachycephalic skull, midface hypoplasia and moderate short stature. In addition to skeletal dysplasia, specific symptoms may appear in respiratory organs, auditory area, and the more distinguished, dentition. Dental findings include: delayed eruption of permanent tooth, multiple supernumerary tooth more than five, malocclusion, etc. In Patients presenting excessive SNT, complications of SNT could be prevented and will be managed through pertinently timed treatment such as tooth extraction, using space maintainer, and orthodontic management after early diagnosis. This case is about the treatment of eruption disorders in permanent teeth owing to SNT in CCD patients, who are three family members in the $3^{rd}$ generation inherited from maternal grandfather through atavism. We performed the extraction of numerous SNT and orthodontic treatment on them in this case. On evaluating panoramic and cephalometric views, some classical signs of skeletal dysplasia due to CCD were recognized in a pool of three patients, the clavicle was distinctively displayed in all patients.

  • Purpose: To analyze contrast-enhancement pattern of stomach cancer on dynamic MRI and to verify the efficacy of intravenous contrast agent in the evaluation of stomach cancer. Materials and Methods: Twelve patients with proven stomach cancer underwent dynamic MRI. By using l.OT scanner, we obtained precontrast FLASH images, and 30, 60, 90 second delay FLASH images after intravenous contrast injection. All patients ingested one liter of water and had intramuscular injection of Buscopan just before MR study. For quantitative analysis we measured signal to noise ratio (SiN) of stomach cancer on each image, and signal difference to noise ratio (SD/N) between cancer and intraluminal fluid, cancer and the pancreas. For qualitative analysis two radiologists evaluated lesion conspicuity on each image by grading system(grade 0, 1, 2, 3: poor, fair, good, excellent). Results: SiN of stomach cancer increased gradually by time(precontrast, 30, 60, 90 second delay: 38.7, 42.5, 57.4, 65.7). SD/N between cancer and intraluminal fluid significantly increased after contrast enhancement(l.24, 25.01, 39.30, 45.89). SD/Ns between cancer and the pancreas were 10.5, 9.33, 9.99, 10.66, respectively. In qualitative analysis, precontrast images were better than postcontrast images for delineation of stomach cancer. Postcontrast images showed clear endo-Iuminal side of stomach cancer, but outer margin of stomach cancer was more distinct on precontrast images. Conclusion: Precontrast MR images are better than postcontrast MR images in the depiction of stomach cancer. Intravenous contrast agent is not imperative in the evaluation of stomach cancer.
