Current Status of Zinc Smelting and Recycling (아연의 제련 및 리사이클링 현황)

  • Global production of zinc is about 13 million tons and zinc is the fourth-most widely used primary metal in the world following iron, aluminum and copper. When zinc is recycled to produce secondary zinc, it can save about 75 % of the total energy that is needed to produce the primary zinc from ore, and in therms of $CO_2$ emissions reduced by about 40 %. However, since zinc is mainly used for galvanizing of steel, the recycling rate of zinc is about 25 %, which is lower than other metals. The raw materials for recycling of zinc include dusts generated in the production of steel and brass, sludge in the production process of non-ferrous metals, dross in the melting of zinc ingots or hot dip galvanizing, waste batteries, and metallic scrap. Among them, steelmaking dust and waste batteries are most actively recycled up to now. Most of the recycling process uses pyrometallurgical methods. Recently, however, much attention has been given to a combined process of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.

The Physical Properties of Mn-Ferrite According to the Variation of Fe-Mn Composition Ratio (철-망간 화합비 변화에 따르는 망간 페라이트의 물성)

  • Experiment has been performed to investigate the thermal and magnetic properties of Mn-ferrite by electrolysis. Using the 0.2%C mild steel as soluble anode and SUS 304 stainless steel as cathode, Mn-ferrite could be made from the sulfuric acid leaching of the wasted manganese dry cell and $MnSO_4$reagent by electrolysis. As the result of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and magnetic measurement, Mn-ferrite was the spinel type in $Mn_{x}Fe_{3-x}O_4$ (X=1), the weight loss rate of $Mn_{x}Fe_{3-x}O_4$ were linearly increased up to the $200^{\circ}C$. Ms, Mr and Hc values were decreased with increasing Mn content and heating temperature. When Mn-ferrite was formed by $MnCl_2$reagent electrolysis, Ms values were higher than those formed from the sulfuric acid leaching of the wasted manganese dry cell and $MnSO_4$reagent by electrolysis. In Mn-ferrite, which was formed from the sulfuric acid leaching of the wasted manganese dry cell by electrolysis, Ms and Mr values were higher, Hc values were lower than which was formed by $MnSO_4$ reagent electrolysis at $200^{\circ}C\;and\;300^{\circ}C, while the same values at $100^{\circ}C$. The shape of particles was spherical type, the sizes of them were about $0.1{\mu}m$ sub-micron in $MnSO_4$reagent electrolysis, $0.5{\mu}m$ in the sulfuric acid leaching of the wasted manganese dry cell by electrolysis.

A Study on the Charateristics for Ozone Decomposition over Recovered Mn from Spent Betteries (폐건전지에서 회수된 Mn을 이용한 오존분해 특성 연구)

  • In this study, the application of recovered metals from spent batteries by extraction was investigated for ozone decomposition as a catalyst. Among the recovered metals, Mn contents was the most important factor for ozone decomposition. It was also found that the deactivation rate of the catalyst was dependent on the Zn contents, while K contents and activities were not perfectly correlated for ozone decomposition. In addition, the catalytic activity the $TiO_2$ added catalyst was decreased, due to the reduction of Mn contents. The structural characteristics of maganase oxide was not associated with the catalytic activity for ozone decomposition.

  • Most of battery industries are growing explosively as a core strategy industry for the development of the semi-conductor, the LCD, and the mobile communication device. Dynamic characteristic analysis consists of dynamic behavior analysis and finite element analysis and is necessary for effective design of machines. In the dynamic behavior analysis, the displacement, velocity, applied force and angular velocity of each components are simulated according to each part. In the FEA, stress analysis, mode analysis, and frequency analysis are performed far each part. The results of these simulations are used for the design specification investigation and compensation for optimal design of cell manufacturing line. Virtual Engineering of the separator inserting machine on the automatic cell assembly line systems are modeled and simulated. 3D motion behavior is visualized under real-operating condition on the computer window. Virtual Prototype make it possible to save time by identifying design problems early in development, cut cost by reducing making hardware prototype, and improve quality by quickly optimizing full-system performance. As the first step of CAE which integrates design, dynamic modeling using ADAMS and FEM analysis using NASTRAN are developed.

연료전지발전

  • 연료전지는 연료가 가진 화학에너지를 전기화학반응에 의해 직접 전기에너지로 변환시키는 발전방식으로 에너지 변환효율이 높고 환경공해가 적어 도시부근이나 도심지 건물내 설치할 수 있으므로 전력계통운용이 용이하여 장래 화력발전 대체용이나 열병합발전용으로 유효하게 사용될 수 있는 등의 장점이 많아 국내의 개발이 활발이 진행되고 있다. 연료전지는 반응물질을 전지내에 저장헤 두는 1차전지(건전지등)나 2차전지(축전지)와는 달리 반응물질이 외부로부터 공급되는한 발전할 수 있으며 단위전지의 내부구조는 일반전지와 유사하나 에너지저장능력이 없는 발전장치이다.
