  • Railroad construction requires a lot of budget, manpower, and equipment, and as a result, many accidents occur. Although efforts are being made at the national level to reduce the accidents at railway construction sites, the occupational accident rate is not showing a downward trend. Various efforts are needed to reduce accidents, the application of smart construction safety technology will be effective. However, if smart construction safety technology is introduced indiscriminately without analysis, duplicate investment may occur, which may lead to a waste of budget for railway construction. In this regard, this study analyzes accident cases at railroad construction sites through a survey of stakeholders and proposes smart construction safety technologies to be effective for those accident types.

  • An annual average of more than 100 casualties occur on construction sites designated by the occupational safety and health law despite the safety assessment regulations from Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency. Even if those sites involve more harmful or hazardous work than other sites, the result creates doubt regarding the effectiveness of the safety assessment regulations. The safety of construction sites is difficult to maintain continuously and instantly because ofthe variability in the construction industry despite inspecting workers, equipment, and facilities by managers. Many discussions on how to utilize BIM have been made to improve the productivity of construction projects, and BIM-based modeling and simulation would bring many benefits to safety. This study examined the hindrance factors of field utilization of the safety assessment regulations through a research literature survey, disaster situation analysis and questionnaire, and suggests the necessity of the application of BIM that enhances the effectiveness of safety assessment regulations by identifying the relationship between the hindrance factors and the function of BIM.

  • Construction industry has a relatively higher accident rate compared to other industries, especially the serious accident rate including death. Ministry of Employment and Labor has not only implemented safety consciousness but also initiated the basic occupational safety and health training for the construction industry. Despite the effort, only a few sites follow the obligatory task and there are reports stating the effect of the education is minimal. As a result, this research aims to determine and analyze the current state of the basic occupational safety and health training including its lesson plan and method. Furthermore, by analyzing the preliminary study on the effective instructional method, this research suggests an effective method to implement safety consciousness to the workers. An improvement plan is also suggested by supplying appropriate educational material to different workers by differentiating the characteristics and the cause of death at various work types in construction sites.

  • Recently, as part of an effort to reduce the high accident rate in the construction industry, the smart construction safety technology is being introduced, and some institutional improvements are being made simultaneously. This study has been carried out to identify the effectiveness of such an improved institution and to draw additional opinions for improvement to spread the field application of smart safety technology. A survey was conducted for participants in the construction industry, and awareness of the improved institution and additional requirements for spreading smart safety technology in the construction site were investigated. As a result of the investigation, high interest in the field application of smart construction safety technology has been confirmed, and some issues such as safety management costs and duplication of on-site safety paperwork have been raised. The opinions derived through this study will be used as baseline data for future institutional improvements for the introduction and diffusion of smart construction safety technology in the construction site.

  • Accident rate in the construction industry of South Korea is increasing every year, and it represents the highest percentage among industries. This shows that activities performed to prevent safety accidents in the country are not efficient when it comes to reduce the accident rate. In order to resolve this issue, a model for the prediction of human accidents should be established. In addition, it is required a quantification study based on pattern of human accidents. Therefore, the objective of this study is to quantify uncertainty of human accidents risk and predict how to change in various circumstances by using Monte Carlo Simulation. To achieve the objective, first, pattern of human accidents was defined. Second, insurance claim payout and information of human accidents during 14 years in construction site were collected. Third, descriptive analysis is conducted to determine the characteristics of the accident pattern. Fourth, to quantitatively analyze the pattern of the human accidents, the population of each accident occurrence and payout were estimated. Finally, estimated populations was analyzed according to characteristics of distribution by using Monte carlo simulation. In the future, this study can be used as a reference for developing the safety management checklist in construction site and development of prediction models of human accident.

  • In 2017, the ratio of the number of victims and deaths in the construction industry was the highest with 25.2% and 29.6%, respectively. Especially, as safety accidents at construction sites continue to increase, the economic loss is greatly increased too. Therefore, in order to prevent safety accidents in the construction work, the safety risk assessment index by type of construction was developed, and the main results of this study are as follows. First, 17 factors related to safety accidents at construction sites were derived through survey and interview survey, and this study suggested 9 items(process, type of construction, progress rate, contract amount, number of floors, safety education, working days and weather) throughout the expert advisory meeting. Second, the risk assessment index for safety accidents was developed based on the ratio and intensity of safety accidents. Third, to verify the risk assessment model, the construction safety risk assessment index by type of construction was derived by surveying and analyzing the statistics of the construction accident. In addition, the risk strength was calculated by dividing human damage caused by construction safety accidents into those killed and injured. The risk assessment index based on the frequency and intensity of safety accidents by type of construction is expected to be utilized as basic data when assessing the risk of similar projects in the future.

  • Although the domestic industrial accidents have been decreased gradually, deaths in the construction sites have been occupied 49.9 percent of the total industry and deaths from fall accident have been accounted for 59.7 percent of the construction industry. In order to prevent fall accident, various safety activities and policy have been carried out. However, the impact on the domestic construction industry was inadequate. On the other hand, in advanced countries, such as the United States, Japan, EU, and Singapore Industrial accidents have been lower than domestic industry due to safety activities, the regulations and policies appropriate for each country's situation. In this study, we compare the major points of the Industrial Safety and Health Act in developed countries with those in South Korea to reduce the number of falls, and propose a revision. As a result of conducting research, three revisions have been proposed as 1) Enhance standards for fall height, 2) Improvement of upper safety rail height on guardrail, 3) Revision and research on Horizontal Sarety bar attachment system. This study will be utilized as a basic study for the analysis of cases in advanced countries.

  • The adoption of smart construction technology in the construction industry is progressing rapidly. By utilizing smart construction technologies such as BIM (Building Information Modeling), drones, artificial intelligence, big data, and Internet of Things technology, it has the effect of lowering the accident rate at the construction site and shortening the construction period. In order to introduce a digital twin platform for construction site management, real-time construction site management is possible in real time by constructing the same virtual space. The digital twin virtual space construction method collects and processes data from the entire construction cycle and visualizes it using a 3D model file. In this paper, we introduce a modeling automation technique that constructs an efficient digital twin space by automatically generating 3D modeling that composes a digital twin space based on 3D spatial data.
