  • This study examined the growth characteristics of broad-leaved container seedlings of Stewartia pseudocamellia, Tilia manshurica and Chionanthus retusus in relation to the raw material properties of the container medium in a green house for 4 months in order to develop optimum container medium for broad-leaved container seedlings. Among the container media used, the high level of the height growth and root collar diameter growth of broad-leaved container seedlings of Stewartia pseudocamellia, Tilia manshurica, Chionanthus retusus was found in the container media with relatively more cocopeat or peatmoss, and the dry matter production of the aerial part and the subterranean part. Also, concerning physiological characteristics, the photosynthetic rate of broad-leaved container seedlings increased in proportion to the volume of cocopeat and peatmoss in the container media. The effect of container media on the growth of broad-leaved container seedlings needs continuous study on the irrigation and fertilization programs along with the study on physiological characteristics including growth characteristics, biomass production and photosynthesis.

  • A study was conducted over two years to determine the temperate mixtures of grasses for grazing horses in Jeju, Korea. The experiment field located at 450 m altitude (Jeju Horse Training Center of Korea Racing Association) was divided into 3 different mixtures plots (3 replications) without a fence between treatments, and sown by three main grasses (orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass and timothy). Seven castrated adult horses were kept on pasture from the middle of April to the end of November without supplementary concentrates. The dry matter yield, percentage of grasses intake and botanical composition were determined during the grazing period. Nutrients in grasses and soils were analyzed. The dry matter yield during two-year experimental period was not different among mixtures (11,000-12,000 kg/ha/year). In botanical composition, perennial ryegrass was dominant in all mixtures during spring through early summer season, but faded away during hot summer season. Timothy seemed to be more resistant against a hot or dry weather than other grasses. The percentage of grasses intakes was higher in the mixture of timothy than those in other mixtures. The contents of NDF (neutral detergent fiber) and ADF (acid detergent fiber) were not different among different mixtures. These results indicate that the mixture of timothy, orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass and white clover (20, 5, 5, 2 kg/ha as a seeding rate) can be used for gazing pasture of horses in the high altitude of Jeju.

  • This experiment was carried out to find effective weed control method of henbit deadnettle ($Lamium$ $amplexicaule$ L.) on cultivating field of Italian ryegrass ($Lolium$ $multiflorum$ Lam) using herbicide in Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan from 2008 to 2009. When Onehof was treated two times of spray, weed control ratio was most high as 90%, but this method can not be used because of much damage to Italian ryegrass. When MCPP was treated two times of spray, weed control ratio was high as 82%, and damage to Italian ryegrass was very insignificant. Especially, when the spray of MCPP was treated two times, dry matter yield of Italian ryegrass was 11,427 kg/ha, but that of non treatment was 1,658 kg/ha. That is to say, forage harvest was impossible in non treatment field. According to these results, to control henbit deadnettle on cultivating field of Italian ryegrass using herbicide, you need to treat with two times of spray of MCPP in mid-March. If you do, you can get regular harvest as much as 11,427 kg/ha.

  • The study was compared for ability to supply macro-nutrients between time and height of mowing to establish alternate technique of a chemical fertilizer with 9-year old 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) trees in a pesticide-free orchard in 2009. Rye and hairy vetch were sown together during fall 2008. Four types of mowing time treatments were included; mowing on April 18+May 28, on April 28+June 8, on May 8+June 18, and on April 18+May 18+June 18. Mowing height treatment included mowing at $3{\pm}1cm$, $7{\pm}1cm$, and $13{\pm}1cm$ on April 18 or June 8. Mowing on May 8+June 18 increased the most dry weight of ground cover and vegetation to 14,480 kg per ha among the mowing time treatments, resulting in the greatest production of T-N (total nitrogen; 292 kg) and K (396 kg) per ha on the soil. Mowing at $7{\pm}1cm$ decreased the most dry weight of ground cover and vegetation to 11,970 kg per ha among the mowing height treatments, resulting in the lowest production of T-N (265 kg), P (111 kg) and K (333 kg) per ha in a soil. Ground cover treatments increased soil organic matter contents, regardless of mowing treatment methods.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects of microbial fertilizer (MF) containing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on the growth in the lettuce by treating MF without and with organic fertilizer (OF), or by its formulation types, and to investigate its application in the eco-friendly agriculture. B. amyloliquefaciens, active microbe of MF, had activities of amylase and protease. Applied only MF without OF, MF treatments were not significantly different with non-fertilizer (NF). As compared to control, dry weight of MOF2 treatment (2,500 kg OF/ha + 50 kg MF/ha) was increased by about 30%. As applied with wettable powder type (WP) and soluble powder type (SP) of MF, the dry weight of WP was increased by 43% than that of control, but SP not significantly different. In the comparison with two MF formulation, dry weight of WP was increased by about 37% than that of SP. These results indicated that an application of MF improved the growth of lettuce by prompting a mineralization of OF, and that the formulation type of MF was better WP than SP.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of stem number on plant growth, fruit quality, and yield of sweet peppers grown in greenhouses under supplemental lighting in winter. The seedlings were transplanted at 3.2 plants·m-2 on October 26, 2020, and started supplemental lighting with 32 high pressure sodium lamps for 16-hour photoperiod from December 1, 2020 to May 25, 2021. Stems were differently trained with 2 and 3 numbers after branching nodes were developed. In the final harvest, the plant height was significantly shorter in the 3 stem-plants than in the 2 stem-plants. The number of nodes per stem and the leaves per plant were increased in the 3 stem-plants than in the 2 stem-plants, while the leaf area was less affected. There were no significant differences in the dry mass of leaves, stems, and immature fruits between the 2 and 3 stem-plants. The fruit fresh weight and fruit dry weight in the 3 stem-plants were decreased by 17% and 12% at 156 days after transplanting (DAT), and by 17% and 15% at 198 DAT compared to those in the 2 stem-plants, respectively. The marketable fruit rates were 93.6% and 95.4% in the 2 and 3 stem-plants, respectively. The total fruit yield in the 3 stem-plants was increased by 30.2% as compared to that in the 2 stem-plants. We concluded that the 3-stem-training cultivation positively affected the total fruit yield by sustaining adaptive vegetative growth of the plants. This result will help producers make useful decisions for increasing productivity of sweet peppers in greenhouses.

  • Six japonica and three Tongil type cultivars that were released in different years and planted to a large area during different periods were grown at the experimental farm of Seoul National University in 2001 and compared for traits related to dry matter production and grain yield. The varieties chosen were Jodongji released in 1896, Paldal in 1944, Jinheung in 1962, Nagdong and Tongil (Tonsil type) in 1971, Milyang#23 (Tongil type) in 1976, Hwasung in 1986, Ilpum in 1991, and Dasan (Tonsil type) in 1996. The more recent cultivars tended to have lower canopy light extinction coefficients (K). The K value was 0.601 in the oldest cultivar, Jodongji, and decreased below 0.5 in the cultivars released since 1971. Radiation use efficiency (RUE) was significantly different among cultivars before heading stage, showing no consistent tendency with the year of release and not significantly different after heading. Leaf area duration (LAD) was significantly different among varieties, and LAD values tended to be higher in the more recent cultivars. In particular, this tendency was more obscure in Tongil type cultivars. LAD of whole growth period had a significantly positive correlation with dry matter yield at harvest $(r=0.776^*)$. Dry matters measured at heading and harvest tended to be higher in recently released cultivars, but not significantly. The grain yield of Jodongji was the lowest but there was no significant difference among the other varieties in japonica, while higher yield occurred in the more recent Tongil type. Grain yield was correlated with grain number per square meter, and the more recent Tongil type cultivars had the greater grain number per square meter, In conclusion, not only the dry matter and grain yield but also related traits except K value showed no clear changes when compared with the year of their release in japonica cultivars. However, the increased grain yield in the more recent Tonsil type cultivars might have resulted from the enhanced LAD that lead to the higher dry matter production and in turn to the enlarged sink size.
