PSRC column is a concrete encased steel angle column. In the PSRC column, the steel angles placed at the corner of the cross-section resists bending moment and compression load. The lateral re-bars welded to steel angles resist the column shear and the bond between the steel angle and concrete. In the present study, current design procedures in KBC 2009 were applied to the flexure-compression, shear, and bond design of the PSRC composite column. To verify the validity of the design method and failure mode, simply supported 2/3 scaled PSRC and correlated SRC beams were tested under two point loading. The test parameters were the steel angle ratio and lateral bar spacing. The test results showed that the bending, shear, and bond strengths predicted by KBC 2009 correlated well with the test results. The flexural strength of the PSRC specimens was much greater than that of the SRC specimen with the same steel ratio because the steel angles were placed at the corner of the column section. However, when the bond resistance between the steel angle and concrete was not sufficient, brittle failures such as bond failure of the angle, spalling of cover concrete, and the tensile fracture of lateral re-bar occurred before the development of the yield strength of PSRC composite section. Further, if the weldability and toughness of the steel angle were insufficient, the specimen was failed by the fracture of the steel angle at the weld joint between the angle and lateral bars.

Steel-concrete composite beam has been used for a considerable time in building construction. An essential component of a composite beam is the shear connection between the steel section and the concrete slabs, which is provided by mechanical shear connectors. A variety of shapes and devices have been in use as shear connectors. This study summarizes the results of an experimental investigation involving the testing of push-out specimens with angle shear connectors. All of 22 push-out specimens were designed to study the effect of a number of parameters on the shear capacity of angle shear connectors such as the height of the angle connector, the length of welding, and the pitch of angles. Based on the test results, a design equation was developed for predicting the shear strength of angle shear connectors.
Cyclic loading tests for shear dominant hybrid steel link beams with circular web openings were performed to evaluate the seismic performance. Four half-scaled specimens with bolted connections were tested. The test parameter is a diameter of the web opening, i.e., shear strength ratio ($V_{pw}/V_p$) of the link beam and presence of top-seat angles. Using test results, adequate design shear strength of link beam was finally suggested. Test results showed that when the shear capacity is less than half of the plastic shear strength, seismic performance was improved due to mitigation of pinching under reversed cyclic inelastic deformations.

In the NRC (New paradigm Reinforced Concrete) beam, steel forms, main angles used as main reinforcements, and shear angles used as basic shear reinforcements are welded and assembled in the form of vierendeel truss structures in a steel factory. After the NRC truss frame is installed at the site, additional main reinforcement and shear reinforcement are distributed. In this study, the shear performance evaluation of the NRC beam was conducted through shear tests in accordance with the type of shear reinforcement of the NRC beam (shear angle, inclined shear reinforcing bar, and U-type cover bar). As a result of the test, the initial stiffness was similar before the initial cracking of each specimen, and all specimens were shear fractured. The shear reinforcements of the specimens exhibited a yielding behavior at the time of the maximum sheat force, and the shear strengths of the specimens increased as the amount of reinforcement of the shear reinforcement increased. These results show that NRC shear reinforcements exhibit shear performance corresponding to their shear strength contribution. As a result of calculating the nominal shear strengths according to KDS 14 20 22, the experimental shear strengths of the NRC beam specimens with shear reinforcement was 37~146% larger than the nominal shear strengths, so It was evaluated as a safety side.
In this study, prefabricated composite columns using high-strength angles (PSRC composite column) was studied. Concentric axial loading tests were performed for 2/3 scale PSRC specimens and an conventional SRC specimen with H-steel at the center of the cross-section. The test parameters were the steel ratio of angles and the spacing of lateral re-bars. The test results showed that by placing the angles at the corners of the cross-section for confinement with provided for the core concrete, the PSRC column specimens exhibited greater load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity than those of the conventional SRC column. The axial load-carrying capacity of the PSRC columns was greater than the prediction by KBC 2009. Using existing stress-strain relationship of confined concrete, the axial load-deformation relationship of the specimens were predicted. The numerical predictions correlated well with the test results in terms of initial stiffness, load-carrying capacity, and post-peak strength- and stiffness-degradations.

In order to investigate the structural performance of a novel prefabricated-SRC column using bolt-connected steel angles(PSRC column), eccentric axial loading tests were performed for six PSRC column specimens and two conventional SRC column specimens. The test parameters were the spacing and sectional configurations of lateral reinforcement, and eccentricity ratio of axial load. The test results showed that, due to high axial-stiffness of the angles located at the corners of the cross section, the compressive load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity of the PSRC specimens were greater than those of the SRC specimens in the large eccentricity ratio of axial load. Closely spaced lateral steel plates and Z-shaped lateral steel plates improved lateral confinement, which increased the load-carrying capacity of the PSRC specimens. The combined flexural and axial load-carrying capacity of the specimens by tests and nonlinear numerical analysis were greater than the predictions by current design codes. The numerical analysis agreed well with the test results including the initial stiffness, peak strength, and post-peak strength degradation.

The present study focused on the structural performance of newly developed prefabricated composite columns (PSRC composite column) using bolt-connected steel angles. Concentric axial loading tests were performed for four 2/3 scaled PSRC column specimens and two conventional SRC column specimens. The test parameters were the spacing and sectional configurations of lateral reinforcement, and width-to-thickness ratio of steel angles. The test results showed that the axial load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity of the PSRC column specimens were comparable to those of the conventional SRC column specimens. Closely spaced steel plates and Z-shaped steel plates for lateral reinforcement increased the deformation capacity of the PSRC column specimens. The load-carrying capacity was greater than the prediction by current design codes. Numerical analysis was performed for the specimens. The results agreed well with the test results in terms of initial stiffness, load-carrying capacity, except for strength degradation due to cover concrete spalling.

In this paper, experiments for the evaluation of tensile strength of steel plate with bolt hole and bearing strength of bolted connection were performed, where bolt holes were punched by drilling and oxygen torch, respectively. For the tensile tests, drilled and oxygen torch punched steel plate specimens of 10mm and 15mm thickness were made from structural angles and H-shapes, respectively. For the bearing strength evaluation, test specimens were fabricated with base plates and splice plates those were also punched by drilling and oxygen torch, respectively. The Vicker's hardness were measured around the bolt hole to investigate material property change due to heat effect by oxygen torch cut. Numerical analysis was also performed to investigate the bearing strength of bolted joints due to the increase of hardness around the bolt hole by oxygen torch cut.

An in-situ experiment was performed to evaluate the pullout resistance capacity of chains which is used as a reinforcement of reinforced earth wall. It was also considered that chain was combined with a bar or L-type steel angle by the transverse reinforcement member in the experiment. About 80 pullout tests were peformed with varying the lengths of chain(2.0m, 2.5m, and 3.0m), the combination of each transverse members(chain only, chain+bar, or chain+angle), and the vertical placement of reinforcements. In the case that uses a chain only and a chain combined with bar, the maximum displacement was about 150mm and load continuously increased to the ultimate tensile strength of chain, and then tension failure of chains occurred. But in the case of a chain combined with angle, the displacement decreased to about 100mm and so it was expected that this combination can constrain the displacement of chain. On the other hand, comparing the yielding pullout load measured in the field to that calculated by theoretical equation, it is shown that measured values are 1.2~3.0 times greater than those of calculated values according to the length of chain, normal vertical stress, and the combination of chain with transverse members. However, the difference in the increment of yielding pullout load between bar and angle is not clear but it appears almost the same increment. It is expected that chain can be safely used as reinforcements of reinforced earth wall, although a theoretical estimation of the pullout resistance capability of chain is too conservative.

The main objective of this study is to develop an optimization algorithm of framed structures with rigid and various semi-rigid connections using the multilevel dynamic programming and the sequential unconstrained minimization techniques (SUMT). The second-order elastic analysis is performed for steel framed structures. The second order elastic analysis is developed based on nonlinear beam-column theory considering the bowing effect. The following semi-rigid connections are considered; double web angle, top-seat angle and top-seat angle with web angle. We considered the three connection models, such as modified exponential, polynomial and three parameter model. The total weight of the structural steel is used as the objective function in the optimization process. The dimensions of steel cross section are selected as the design variables. The design constraints consist of strength requirements for axial, shear and flexural resistance and serviceability requirements.
