  • In this study, fracture network in rock mass was interpreted using borehole wall images obtained by televiewer. The orientation and JRC value of major joint set were evaluated adopting image analysis techniques, of which process were written in macro-program code. As linking JRC to joint stiffness using Barton-Bandis model, fracture network map was produced for application to jointed rock modelling in numerical analysis of underground structure.

  • This paper presents substructural identification methods for the assessment of local damages in complex and large structural systems. For this purpose, an auto-regressive and moving average with stochastic input (ARMAX) model is derived for a substructure to process the measurement data impaired by noises. Using the substructural methods, the number of unknown parameters for each identification can be significantly reduced, hence the convergence and accuracy of estimation can be improved. Secondly, the damage index is defined as the ratio of the current stiffness to the baseline value at each element for the damage assessment. The indirect estimation method was performed using the estimated results from the identification of the system matrices from the substructural identification. To demonstrate the proposed techniques, several simulation and experimental example analyses are carried out for structural models of a 2-span truss structure, a 3-span continuous beam model and 3-story building model. The results indicate that the present substructural identification method and damage estimation methods are effective and efficient for local damage estimation of complex structures.

  • An Inverse modal perturbation method was applied to estimate the assessments of the damages at the large-scaled marine structure, such as pier or dolphin, from the structural dynamic natural frequencies and mode shape. Vibrations of structural stiffness, natural frequencies and mode shapes from the eigenvalue analysis lead to the modal peturbation equations, which were considered with a second order term. This paper estimates the assessments of the damages for the structure with the decreased stiffness and shows the convergence of perturbation equation.

  • In this paper, a technique to detect structural damage and estimate its severity using peaks and zeros of frequency response functions (FRFs) is developed. The peaks in FRFs represent the natural frequencies of the structure and the zeros provide additional information. The characteristics of peaks and zeros are defined and the calculation procedure to obtain the peaks and zeros from the relationship between frequency response function and stiffness and mass matrices are clearly explained. A structural system identification theory which is utilizing the sensitivity of stiffness of a structural member to eigenvalues, i.e., peaks and zeros, is established. The proposed method can identify damage location and its severity, with natural and zero frequencies, by estimating structural stiffness of the structure in the process of making a analytical model The accuracy and feasibility is demonstrated by numerical models of a spring-mass system and a beam structure.

  • In the development of clothing design through virtual simulation, it is essential to minimize the differences between the virtual and the real world as much as possible. The most critical task to enhance the similarity between virtual and real garments is to find simulation parameters that can closely emulate the physical properties of the actual fabric in use. The simulation parameter optimization process requires manual tuning by experts, demanding high expertise and a significant amount of time. Especially, considerable time is consumed in repeatedly running simulations to check the results of applying the tuned simulation parameters. Recently, to tackle this issue, artificial neural network learning models have been proposed that swiftly estimate the results of drape test simulations, which are predominantly used for parameter tuning. In these earlier studies, relatively simple linear stiffness models were used, and instead of estimating the entirety of the drape mesh, they estimated only a portion of the mesh and interpolated the rest. However, there is still a scarcity of research on non-linear stiffness models, which are commonly used in actual garment design. In this paper, we propose a learning model for estimating the results of drape simulations for non-linear stiffness models. Our learning model estimates the full high-resolution mesh model of drape. To validate the performance of the proposed method, experiments were conducted using three different drape test methods, demonstrating high accuracy in estimation.

  • Damage location and extent of structure could be detected by the inverse analysis on dynamic response properties such as frequencies and mode shapes. The dynamic response of building structures has many noise and affected by nonstructural members and, above all, the behavior of building structure is more complex than civil structure and this makes the damage detection difficult. In recent researches the damage is detected by the indirect index such as sensitivity or assumed values. However, for the more reasonable damage detection, it needs to use the damage index directly induced from dynamic equation. The purpose of this study is to provide the damage detection method on shear building structures by the damage index directly induced from dynamic equation. The provided damage index could be estimated from measured mode shape of undamaged structure and frequency difference between undamaged and damaged structure. The damage detection method is applied to numerical analysis model such as MATLAB and MIDAS GENw for the verification. The damage index at damaged story represents (-) sign and 15 times than other undamaged sories.

  • Modal properties for tapered cantilever pipe-type beam is identified by applying the boundary conditions to a general solution for tapered beam. A bending stiffness for cracked beam is constructed based on an energy method for tapered cantilever thin-walled pipe, which has a through-the-thickness crack, subjected to bending. Then the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a tapered cantilever thin-walled cracked pipe are identified. It can be found that the phenomenon of the bending stiffness distribution along the beam length of the cracked beam is quite reasonable, the natural frequencies are decreased as the crack sizes are increased, and the mode shapes are changed due to the crack. This results may be used to the vibration-based crack identification for the tapered cantilever pipe-type tower structures.

  • Estimating the nonlinear seismic response of structure in earthquake engineering is important. Nonlinear static analysis is a typical method, and a variety of methods and techniques for estimating the stiffness of structural system at a certain analysis stage have been introduced and used in numerical structural analysis. On the other hand, such methods have many difficulties in practical usage because they use time-consuming iterative methods or simplified algorithms for calculating the structural stiffness at specific points in the time of nonlinear static analysis. For this reason, this study suggests an accurate and effective method for estimating the stiffness of a structure in nonlinear static analysis. For this goal, existing theories of an incremental step-by-step solution was investigated first. Subsequently, an algorithm available for calculating the precise stiffness of a structural system, each element of which has a bilinear material model, was developed based on the investigated methods. Finally, a computer program, sNs, was developed with the algorithm used.
