  • The main objective of this paper is to study the behaviour of yLRC composite columns at elevated temperatures by experimental test. The effects of load ratios, cross-section size and fire protection for the yLRC columns were investigate d by the test and compared using the heat transfer analysis perfo rmed based on the finite element program ANSYS 10.0 using the ISO834 standard fire curve, following the main guidelines proposed by the EC4 Part 1.2. As heat transfer is the movement of heat by conduction, convection, and radiation, and as temperature inside an object varies by position and time, time. As the steel's thermal conductivity is higher than that of concrete, steel loses its strength rapidly in a high-temperature situation such as a fire. Fire resistance performance of the yLRC composite column under fire conditions was evaluated througheat transfer analysis for parametric study.

  • Optimal aerodynamic design for the pitch-controlled horizontal axis wind turbine and its aerodynamic performance for various pitch angles are performed numerically by using the blade element momentum theory. The numerical calculation includes effects such as Prandtl‘s tip loss, airfoil distribution, and wake rotation. Six different airfoils are distributed along the blade span, and the special airfoil i.e. airfoil of 40% thickness ratio is adopted at the hub side to have structural integrity. The nonlinear chord obtained from the optimal design procedure is linearized to decrease the weight and to increase the productivity with very little change of the aerodynamic performance. From the comparisons of the power, thrust, and torque coefficients with corresponding values of different pitch angles, the aerodynamic performance shows delicate changes for just $3^{\circ}$ increase or decrease of the pitch angle. For precisive pitch control, it requires the pitch control algorithm and its drive mechanism below $3^{\circ}$ increment of pitch angle. The maximum torque is generated when the speed ratio is smaller than the designed one.

  • Nano-bending method is presented to measure the Poisson's ratio of thinfilms for MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) applicaiton. The douvle-ring specimen is designed and fabricated based on the surface micromachining process to facilitate the measurement of the Poisson's ratio. The Poisson's ratio can be obtained through analyzing the linear load-displacement relationship of the double ring specimen subjected to nano-indenter loading. The Present nano-bending mehod is an in-situ measurement approach due to the compatibility to the surface micromachining process. The Poisson's ratio is locally obtained at the location of the double ring specimen with micro dimension. To validate the nano-bending method, the Poisson's ratio of LPCVD (Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition) poly-silicon with thickness of 2.3㎛ is investigated. Experimental results reveal that the Poisson's ratio of the poly-silicon film is 0.2569. The standard deviation of the nano-bending measurement for the stiffness of double ring specimens is 2.66%.

  • This paper presents the appropriateness for using high strength reinforcement according to the use of high strength concrete. Nine flexural tests were conducted on full-scale beam specimens according to the concrete strength, reinforcement strength and reinforcement ratio as main variable. The structural behavior was analyzed due to the flexural strength, stress-strain curve, deflections at yielding and fracture point, crack appearance and ductility factor. The member with high-strength reinforcements showed large deflection at yielding point and this was analyzed as a main cause to decrease the ductility factor. Structural behavior after yielding point, however, showed similarity to behavior of members with normal strength reinforcements of same stiffness. It was found that in the case of using reinforcements of $5500kgf/cm^2$ strength, the combination with concrete of $800kgf/cm^2$ strength demonstrated the great appropriateness which can increase the flexural capacity without any reduction of maximum reinforcement ratio.

  • This paper presents the finite element method results for HSS(Hollow Square Section) steel columns strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Plastic(CFRP) sheets. 6 specimens were fabricated and the specimen groups were non-compact short columns, slender short columns, and non-compact long columns. Test parameter was the number of CFRP ply. The finite element analysis was performed by using ANSYS Workbench V.14.0 and the results of FEM were compared with those of Test for failure mode, load-displacement curve, maximum load, and initial stiffness. The comparisons between experimental observations and computed results show that the analyses provided good correlation to actual behavior. Finally, the buckling stress were calculated according to the AISC cold-formed structure provision and the retrofitting effect were verified for each section type.

  • Seismic design forces for bridge components may be determined by modifying elastic member forces of design earthquakes using appropriate response modification factors according to the national design code of bridges Modeling technique of pile foundation system is one of the important parameters which greatly affects the results in the process of the elastic seismic analysis of a bridge system with pile foundation. In this paper, a approximate and simplified modeling technique of a pile foundation system for the practical purposes is presented. The modeling technique is based on the stiffnesses of pile foundation during earthquake. The horizontal stiffnesses are determined from the resistance-deflection curves derived from the results of dynamic field tests using cyclic loads and the vertical stiffness includes the effects of the end bearing capacities and side friction of piles as well as the pile compliances under the expected vertical load level. The applicability of the proposed technique has been validated through the some example bridge analyses.

  • Thispaper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the fire performances ofsimply supported iTECH composite beams using an ISO834 standard fire. There are very few independent studies on the fire resistance of composite steel and concrete structures of various designs. The iTECH composite beam system has been used in construction, but nothing is known about its influence in a fire. To evaluate the fire resistance performanceof the iTECH beam, a test was conducted for 4.7m-span-length iTECH beams under given conditions in a laboratory. The fire resistance performance of unprotected coatings of the iTECH beam has been examined, and a longer period of fire resistance was achieved by increasing the beam coating's section size and decreasing its load ratio. Coatings for the fire protection of iTECH beams reduce the rate of temperature rise of the beam in case of fire, and the required thickness of spray-on fire protection coatings can be determined by means of tests.

  • In the evaluation of the subgrade stiffness structure by the SASW method, the calculation of the phase velocities is the important task controlling the reliability of the result. The interpretation of the phase spectrum should precede the phase-velocity calculation in the current practice of the SASW method. The difficulty involved in the interpretation prohibited the SASW method from being spread over to the industry. This study proposed a new method called the frequency-wave number technique, which is based on the frequency-wave number relationship of the surface wave in the multi-layered system. The frequency-wave number technique eliminates the expertise in the interpretation of the phase spectrum, automates the phase-velocity calculation and expedites the determination of the phase-velocity dispersion curve. To verify the validity of the proposed frequency-wave number method, the transfer function determined from the numerical simulation of the SASW measurements was used fir the calculation of the automatic calculation of the phase velocities and compared with the phase velocities by WinSASW employing the phase-unwrapping method. Also, the proposed method was applied to the real SASW measurements performed at$\bigcirc$$\bigcirc$area in GyeongGi-Do to see how the proposed method works with the real measurements.

  • The strict regulations on eco-friendly construction and the significant reduction of natural aggregate resources have raised public concerns on the utilization of recycled aggregates for backfilling a power transmission pipeline trench. In this paper, the particle breakage of concrete-based recycled aggregates and river sand has been experimentally studied during the standard compaction test. The applied compaction energy does not significantly break the river sand particles down, and thus causes no change in the compaction curve, thermal resistivity, and particle gradation characteristics. On the other hand, considerable particle breakage was observed in case of the three recycled aggregates. Such particle breakage leads to enhancing compaction effort, reducing thermal resistivity, and changing particle gradation curve with finer particles that are broken during the first compaction. In addition, particle breakage is more dramatic in lower water contents because pore water may damp down the compaction energy.

  • This study was aimed to see the effect of chemical grout on fresh granite joint shear strength. The grouting chemical used in this study was composed of 25% water glass. Direct shear tests were performed on the chemical filled joints, which had been made artificially with granite. The test results show that chemical grouted rock jonts have markedly reduced shear strength comparing with the ungrouted fresh joints and they sheared within chemical grout before the rock to rock contact had been established, while the ungrouted joint sheared between rock surfaces from the beginning of shear deformation. With chemical grouted joints the shear stress slowly reached its maximum without showing distinct peak shear strength. Therefore the shear stiffness of joints were decreased with increasing thickness of grout. but the shear strain at failure was increased with it.
