  • Biodegradable polybutylene succinate (BPS) multifilament were designed to degrade upon disposal by the action of afforestration of Ecklonia cava. Matured thalli of E. cava were collected at Jeju for zoospore collection and the substrate for zoospores were BPS multifilament (12 mm, 500 Td/96). The materials were made as nets of $1\;m^2$ with a cross stripes of 10 cm. The unit biodegradable nets bearing germlings of E. cava was moved into Wando where the place is conducting intensive seaweed cultivation in Korea for 5 months of nursery culture until they grew to 10 cm in length after which the nets were transplanted into the sea bed at Jeju at a depth of 12 m and the algal growth was monitored from May 2007 to December 2008. This is the first instance of using the BPS materials for seaweed afforestation to avoid any environmental problems.

  • 신체 부위를 움직이는 상상을 할 때, 일반적으로 뇌의 감각 및 운동 피질 영역에서 특정 주파수 대역의 EEG(Electroencephalography) 신호의 세기가 감소하거나 증가하는 ERD(Event-Related Desynchronization)/ERS(Event-Related Synchronization) 현상이 발생한다.

  • Ecklonia cava is brown alga which ow in the sea all over the world. It has been shown that Ecklonia cava has antioxidative, anticoagulant, and antiviral effect, lately. In this study, we examined the antihypertensiye effect of Ecklonia cava extract (Eca) on 2-kidney 1-clip Goldblatt Hypertensive Rats (GB-HT). In vitro assay, the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity was significantly inhibited by Eca (27-95% inhibition at $10-50\;{\mu}g/ml$). The systolic blood pressure of Eca-treated GH-HT significantly was decreased compared to that of control CB-HT (15% decrease at 50 mg/kg). The serum ACE activity was also inhibited 19% with 50 mg/kg Eca treatment. These results suggest that Eca can be used as antihypertensive functional foods and nutraceuticals.

  • The dietary fiber and crude fiber contents of different thallus regions (blade, stipe, and holdfast) in three brown algae (Laminaria japonica, Ecklonia stolonifera, and E. cava) were detennined at different ages, and then compared with one another. On a dry matter basis, the soluble dietary fiber (SDF) content was highest ($10.8{\pm}0.5%$) in the holdfast of 2-year old L. japonica, and the insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), total dietary fiber (TDF), and crude fiber (CF) contents were highest in the holdfast of 2-year old E. cava at $44.5{\pm}0.7%$, $50.2{\pm}0.5%$, $6.8{\pm}0.7%$, respectively. The IDF, TDF, and CF contents of these three species were measured in the following order: holdfast > stipe > blade, and the SDF contents of L. japonica exhibited the reverse of this trend. The TDF/CF ratio of 1-year old L. japonica, E. stolonifera, and E. cava was greater than was observed in the corresponding 2-year old samples. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report demonstrating that the holdfasts of L. japonica, E. stolonifera, and E. cava are rich in dietary fiber contents, especially IDF, TDF, and CF.

  • With continuing demand for the development of new, effective and safe therapies, an investigation was carried out to test the efficacy of an antibacterial agent derived from marine edible seaweed. The methanolic extract of Ecklonia cava from marine edible seaweed evinced potential antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis. Among five solvent-soluble fractions of E. cava methanolic extract, the ethyl acetate soluble extract (EtOAc) exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity, with a MIC value of $128{\mu}g/mL $ against E. faecalis strains. Furthermore, a synergistic antibacterial effect between an antibiotic and the EtOAc fraction was assessed using fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) indices. A combination of ciprofloxacin and the EtOAc fraction resulted in a ${\sum}FIC_{min}$ range of 0.188 and ${\sum}FIC_{max}$ of 0.508 to 563, suggesting that the ciprofloxacin-EtOAc fraction of E. cava combination resulted in an antibacterial synergy effect against E. faecalis.

  • The mass cultivation of Ecklonia cava Kjellman was studied as a potential biomass source for the extract industry in Korea. Experiments were conducted to investigate the optimal conditions for artificial seed production and mass cultivation of this species. Maximum growth and young thalli development in the nursery culture area occurred at 2 m depth, whereas maximum growth of thalli in the main culture area occurred at 1 m depth. Production of E. cava was between 2.6 and 3.6 kg wet wt. $m^{-1}$ after depth control and removal of fouling organism, etc. The relationship between optimal water depth for culture and underwater irradiance during the E. cava cultivation was calculated as: y = -0.718x + 8.042 ($r^2$=0.976). The growth rates achieved in this trial indicate that E. cava cultures could produce and supply sufficient biomass.

  • A seaweed Ecklonia cava from Jeju island was irradiated with $0.1{\sim}6\;Mrad$ of gamma-rays and the yield and viscosity characteristics of alginates from it were examined. Irradiation below 1 Mrad dose brought about a 70% increase in the yield while higher doses caused slight decreases. Viscosity behavior of alginates below 0.5 Mrad dose was not altered while the viscosity decreased markedly above 1 Mrad dose, likely due to the depolymerization.

  • The seasonal and portional variation in the composition of uronic acid of alginic acid from Eckionia cava was investigated. The sample was collected from the coast of Ieechun Illkwangmyun, Yangsangun, Kyungnam, Korea, in the period of January to December in 1982. In seasonal variation of the content of alginic acid, the range of variation was larger in the frond than in the stipe, It was the highest content in between February to April, and the lowest in between August to October, and the content was more in the stipe than in the frond. The uronic acid ratio(M/G ratio) was varied seasonaly in a relationship with the variation of the alginic acid content. The maximum M/G ratio appeared in the period of December to March and minimum May to August, and the average values of the M/G ratios in the periods were 3.08, 2.64 in the frond and 2.91, 1.39 in the stipe, respectively. Additively a year mean values were 3.22 in the frond and 2.18 in the stipe.
