  • Finite element models of dynamic systems can be updated in two stages. In the first stage, mass and stiffness matrices are updated neglecting damping, and in the second stage, damping matrices are estimated with the mass and stiffness matrices fixed. Three methods to estimate damping matrices for this purpose are proposed in this paper. The methods include one for proportional damping systems and two for non-proportional damping systems. Method 1 utilizes orthogonality of normal modes and estimates damping matrices using the modal parameters extracted from the measured responses. Method 2 estimates damping matrices from impedance matrices which are the inverse of FRF matrices. Method 3 estimates damping using the equation which relates a damping matrix to the difference between the analytical and measured FRFs. The characteristics of the three methods are investigated by applying them to simulated discrete system data and experimental cantilever beam data.

  • A new identification method for a nonproportional damping matrix using the finite element (FE) model updating technique is proposed. Mass and stiffness matrices of the undamped system are identified by FE model updating method. Sensitivity analysis is used to update the FE model, and zero frequencies are considered as design parameters to supplement the information of vibration characteristics. The nonproportional damping matrix is identified through the proposed method. A numerical example is considered to verify the performance of the proposed method. As a result, the damping matrix of the nonproportional system is estimated accurately.

  • This paper proposes a new technique to formulate the finite element model of a sandwich beam by using GHM (Golla-Hughes-McTavish) internal auxiliary coordinates to account for frequency dependence. Through the use of auxiliary coordinates, the equation of motion of undamped mass and stiffness matrix form is extended to encompass viscoelastic damping matrix. However, this methods all suffer from an increase in order of the final finite element model which is undesirable in many applications. Here we propose to combine the GHM method with model reduction techniques to remove the objection of increased model order.

  • Equation of motion of non conservative system considering mass matrix, elastic stiffness matrix, load correction stiffness matrix by circulatory force's direction change and Winkler and Pasternak foundation stiffness matrix is derived. Also stability analysis due to the divergence and flutter loads is performed. And the influence of internal and external damping coefficient on flutter load is investigated applying the quadratic eigen problem solution. Additionally the influence of non-conservative force's direction parameter, internal and external damping and Winkler and Pasternak foundation on the critical load of Beck's and Leipholz's and Hauger's columns are investigated.

  • To detect targets with active sonar system in the underwater environments, the targets are localized by receiving the echoes of the transmitted sounds reflected from the targets. In this case, reverberation from the scatterers is also generated, which prevents detection of the target echo. To detect the target effectively, reverberation suppression techniques such as pre-whitening based on autoregressive model and principal component inversion have been studied, and recently a Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF)-based technique has been also devised. The NMF-based reverberation suppression technique shows improved performance compared to the conventional methods, but the geometry of the transducer and receiver and attenuation by distance have not been considered. In this paper, the performance is improved through preprocessing such as the directionality of the receiver, Doppler related thereto, and attenuation for distance, in the case of using a continuous wave with a bistatic sonar. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, simulation with a reverberation model was performed. The results show that the detection probability performance improved by 10 % to 40 % at a low false alarm probability of 1 % relative to the conventional non-negative matrix factorization.

  • The simplified model for 3-dimensional analysis of vehicle-bridge interactions is presented in this study. By using the analysis model which includes the eccentricity of axle loads and the effect of the torsional forces acting on the bridge, the more accurate analysis results of the behavior of the bridge can be obtained. The equations of kinetic energy, potential energy and damping energy are expressed by degrees of freedom of the vehicle and the bridge. And then by applying Lagrange's equations of motion, the equations of motion of the vehicle and the bridge are obtained. By deriving the equations of forces acting on the bridge considering the vehicle-bridge vertical interactions and also by identifying the position of vehicle as time goes by, mass matrix, stiffness matrix, damping matrix and load vector of vehicle-bridge system are constructed in accordance with the position of vehicles. Then using Newmark's β-method(average acceleration), the equations of motion for the total vehicle bridge system are solved.

  • The mega frame system is becoming popular for the design and construction of skyscrapers because this system exhibits structural efficiency by allowing high rigidity of the structure while minimizing the amount of structural materials to be used. Since the mega frame system is usually adopted for super high-rise buildings, the comfort of occupants may be main concerns in the practical application of this system. For the enhancement of the serviceability of mega frame structures, a semi-active tuned mass damper (STMD) is developed in this study. To this end, a Magnetorheological (MR) damper is employed replacing passive damper as a semi-active damper to improve the control effect of a conventional TMD. Since a conventional finite element model of mega frame structures has significant numbers of DOFs, numerical simulation for investigation of control performances of a STMD is impossible by using the full-order model. Therefore, a reduced-order system using minimal DOFs, which can accurately represent the dynamic behavior of a mega frame structure, is proposed in this study through the matrix condensation technique To improve the efficiency of the matrix condensation technique, multi-level matrix condensation technique is proposed using the structural characteristics of mega frame structures. The efficiency and accuracy of the reduced-order control proposed in this study and the control performance of a STMD were verified using example structures.

  • Compressed Sensing(CS) is the theory that can recover signals which are sampled below the Nyquist sampling rate to original analog signals. In this paper, we propose the estimation algorithm of ultrasonic attenuation coefficients in the frequency domain using CS. While most estimation algorithms transform the time-domain signals into the frequency-domain using the Fourier transform, the proposed method directly utilize the spectral information in the recovery process by the basis matrix without the completely recovered signals in the time domain. We apply three transform bases for sparsifying and estimate the attenuation coefficients using the Centroid Downshift method with Dual-reference diffraction compensation technique. The estimation accuracy and execution time are compared for each basis matrix. Computer simulation results show that the DCT basis matrix exhibits less than 0.35% estimation error for the compressive ratio of 50% and about 6% average error for the compressive ratio of 70%. The proposed method which directly extracts frequency information from the CS signals can be extended to estimating for other ultrasonic parameters in the Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) Analysis.
