Methods: The research was conducted from November 1 to December 30, 2006, with a survey of 310 nurses and 240 patients at eight tertiary hospitals in Seoul. Data were collected according to the level of nurse manpower from the first (a nurse vs. patient ratio of below 2.0) to the sixth (a ratio of over 4.0) rank. The survey tools were used Park-Yoon's job satisfaction (1992) and Wandelt and Ager (1974)'s patient satisfaction. The acquired data were analyzed with SPSS $PC^+$ 12.0 program using descriptive methods, ${\chi}^2$ test, ANCOVA, and Scheffe. • Scheduling for nursing personnel involves many factors and requirements. Therefore, manual scheduling requires much time and effort to produce an adequate schedule. This paper introduces a PC based nurse scheduling support system which was developed in Microsoft Access 2.0, an easy to use data base management tool. First step of this system is to determine necessary number of nursing personnel by medical law or by patient classification. Current Korean medical law stipulates that number of patients attended by a nurse is 2.5 for hospitalization. In addition, necessary nursing personnel by patient classification was determined four nurses for seven patients in this system based on the authors' preliminary study. And the second step is to assign daily duty type for each nurse at every nursing unit automatically. The introduced system fully utilizes the GUI environment of Microsoft Windows and even makes the computer-novice nurses feel comfortable in using the system. This system can help nursing administrators improve nurse scheduling in a way of quick and easy schedule generation for the future, and allow nurses more time for patient care.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the education and training for public health nursing personnel and we suggest a development plan for their education and training. Methods: The data was collected from the annual planning reports of the Department of Health and Welfare Training in the Korea National Institute of Health from 1985 to 2004. In order to overcome these problems, education & training for public health nursing personnel should 1) establish dear and specific goals and objectives, 2) develop educational programs that focus on the trainee's needs and develop a long term educational program for reinforcing practical competency along with elementary courses for novices & advanced courses for experts, 3) utilize effective teaching methods such as case study, e-learning and applied learning programs. Conclusion: The education and training for public health nursing personnel should be improved in order to reinforce their competency and their ability to cope with the changing health care environment of the 21st century.

  • Purpose: This study analyzed the characteristics of occupational injuries and illnesses of the nursing staff to reveal the prevalence of the major diseases and the predominant causes of the injuries in the nursing environment. Methods: Total 3,455 work-related compensation cases of nursing staff from January 1 2000 to December 31 2012, were selected. The specific types of the diseases, injuries, causes and the time of the incidence were analyzed. Results: Majority of the compensated cases were young women under 30 years old. The composition of the occupational injuries and illness was 74.5% and 25.5%, respectively. Occupational infection was the major part of the occupational illnesses (47.3%), and 74% of them were tuberculosis. Musculoskeletal disorder (12.6%) was followed the infectious disease, and 36.4% of them occurred while moving the patients. Slipping was the most frequent injury; most of them resulted in the lower extremities injury. Most of the injuries increased during shift change, except workplace violence, which increased later than 19:00. Conclusion: Occupational injuries and illnesses of nursing staff need the specific prevention strategy, and the prevention strategy should be suitable for the nursing workplace.

Methods: A total of 180 care workers working at long-term care hospitals were recruited. Data collection was done from July 22 to September 7, 2018. Results: The significant TPB variables influencing the intention of hand hygiene implementation were perceived behavior control (β=.41, p<.001), normative belief (β=.28, p<.001) and attitude toward behavior (β=.15, p=.014). These factors explain 39% of care workers' intension of implementing hand hygiene in long-term care hospitals. Conclusion: In order to strengthen the commitment of hand hygiene, it is necessary to have a positive attitude toward hand hygiene by eliminating the obstacles to hand hygiene.
