The purpose of this study is to identify the leadership and subordination of hospital nurses: to determine the leadership and subordination by nurses' characteristics, which are age, educational background, career, and position of nurses. 279 staff nurses, 13 charge nurses, 32 head nurses and 16 nurse supervisors were participated in this study during the period from Dec. 5 to Dec. 20, 1986. Subjects were instructed to rate at one of five points likert type scale on the 26 items of leadership and subordination. The reliability of the items (Cronbach's α) were 0.63∼0.84. Among the total 26 items, 8 items on authority, 4 items on human relation, 9 items on committment of position and 5items on committment of job were summed to cummulative scores in each category. As a result of data analysis nurses who perceive positive on authority are 68.6% and positive on human relation are 67.9%. The perception of authority is different by age, Career and position of nurses. (P<0.05). And nurses who perceive positive on committment of position are 84.7% and positive on committment of job are 62.1%. The perception of committment for position is different by age, career and position of nurses (P <0.05), and committment of job is different by age and position. (P<0.05).
This study was performed from september 26th to October 7th 1981 to investigate the contamination problems of Nurse's hands characterized by var-ious nursing functions. A total of 50 nurse's hands were sampled from 5 different wards of H. University Hospital. The samples were cultured for isolation of microorganisms. The results were as follows: 1. Of 50 Nurses 23 were found to be contaminated by 9 species of bacilli such as Non-fermentative gram negative Bacilli, Gram negative bacilli, Oxidase positive, Enterobacter, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Gaffkya tetragens, Bacillus subtilis. 2. The contaminate rates by wards where they have been serving are; 7 (87.5%) of 8 nurses from Intensive care unit, 7(70%) of 10 nurses from general surgery ward, 3(50%) of 6 nurses from neurosurgery ward, 2(20%) of 10 nurses from orthopedic surgery ward, 4(25%) of 10 nurses from medical ward. 3. The contamination rates by the types of clinical service offered are 6(85.7%) of 7 nurses after wound dressing assist 6 (55.3%) of 13 nurses after vital sign check. 4. The purpose of this study is to propose the baseline data for developing the stress measurement tool for staff nurses working in the hospital. Two hundred and fifteen stan nurses in Seoul National University Hospital were participated during the period from Feb. 28 to Mar. 10, 1984. Though the pretest and literature review a questionnaire was constructed with 63 stressors which were experienced by the nurses in the hospital. Subjects were given instruction to rate 1∼6 likert type scale according to the level of stress experienced by each stressor described. Reliability of the tool was tested by Cronbach's Alpha, and the result was α=0.94871. Factor analysis was applied to organize 63 items together. As the result, 15 factors were obtained and these factors explained 66.3% of variance. The 15 factors were: 1) Work overload 2) Role conflict as a profession 3) Lack of professional knowledge and skill 4) Interpersonal problem 5) Conflict in nurse doctor relationship 6) Work conflict with doctors 7) Emotional burden due to the limitation of medicine 8) Poor treatment 9) Unsatisfactory relationship with supervisor 10) Low reward 11) Unsatisfactory relationship with subordinate 12) Poor physical environment of unit 13)Responsibility for extra affairs 14)Unfamiliar situation 15)Night duty.
The purpose of the present research is to evaluate the therapeutic ingredients-empathy, warmth, and intimacy - as perceived by patient in the relationship with nurses during his hospitalization. "Relationship Questionnaire"developed by C. B. Truax during 1963 was administered from September 1976 to December 1976 to a sampling of 61 discharged patients, 20 were received by mail questionnaire, 19 were successfully interviewed by their doctor at a regular psychotherapy meeting, 22 were contacted by nurses or psychiatric residents at discharge day. Findings showed that 1) the total mean score of therapeutic ingredients of nurses was 9. 54 ; 2)the total mean score of empathy, warmth and intimacy was 10. 10, 9.57, and 9.00 : 3) there was the significant relationship between therapeutic ingredients and other variables-sex, education, number of admission, helpfulness ratings of admission and, present health condition- : 4) there was no significant. relationship between therapeutic ingredients as patient′s perception and age, duration of admission, or motivation of admission, or follow - up rare ; 5) there was no relationship among empathy, warmth and intimacy ; 6) tile ranking of the important psychiatric personnel who were marked as the helper at the treatment and understanding for patient′s recovery, was psychiatric doctor and nurse and then nurse student and then nurse aid.
The advanced knowledge is increasing day by day due to the progress of medicine and tectonics, the increase of nursing research nowadays. In parallel with these, nursing profession has a need of the nursing care with improvement of new Knowledge, tectonics and nursing procedure through the insertive education. The results of this studies are as follows : A. learning needs of nurses 1) Generally the learning needs of nurses is very high. 2) Of the learning need of inservice education for nurses, the highest learning need is as follow (Table 2 ) 1 st : Charting 2 nd : The ability of grasping patient's needs and problems. 3 rd ; The contents and the methods of the advanced nursing skill. 4 th ; The importance of team work 5 th ; The general knowledge of the various disease 6 th : The decision of a propriety nursing diagnosis under the general condition. 7 th ; The introduction of the new nursing theory. 8 th : The Nurses role and the responsibility in emergency and disaster. 9 th : The improvement of nursing skill for the perfect interpersonal relationship. l0th ; Cultural education: B . Verification of hypothesis 1. Hypothesis I , learning needs of nurses and educational level of nurse will be correlated, is rejected (Table 3 ) 2. This study is designed to reveal the relationship of Army Nurses′ effectiveness to their perceptual orientation. Studies on nurses are very few despite of highly professional duties which deal with human lives. Effectiveness of nurses could be seen from both within and without. At present study, however, the researcher tried to work on the point of view of perceptual psychology. The study was designed !o fined the relationship of "Perceptual Orientation Scale"to their ratings training courses and experiences. The subjects are limited to nurses serving in the Army of the Republic of Korea. Many researches on nurses, such as Young Bok Lee(1970), Sook Ja Yoo(1971) Young Sook Hong (1970), Ik Do Choi (1966), are dealt with their attitude, morale, how to see their profession, adjustability and college lives, tut no one ever studied their subjective perceptual orientation. Method "Perceptual Orientation Scale"(Chunghoon Choy, 1971) was administered to 315 Army Nurses during the period of June to November 1971, and the relationship with their ratings by their supervising officers, training courses and their experiences were tested. All the relationship were calculated by the method of Chi-Squares. Result 1) There is no significant relationship between "Perceptual Orientation Scale" and their ratings. 2) There is no significant relationship between "Perceptual Orientation Scale" and their training courses. 3) There is no significant relationship between "Perceptual Orientation Scale" and their experiences. Conclusion As far as calculated result are concerned the research could not fined any Significant relationship. Therefore we can conclude that "Perceptual Orientation Scale"of the nurses has nothing to do with nurses effectiveness. It means the Army Nurses rating method has to be modified at once. Also we have to continue to fined mole significant effectiveness criteria and other researches be encouraged.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of the Stress Management Education Program (SMEP) on the nurses stress and stress management ability, and to identify the main factors affecting them. The subjects were 72 nurses who participated in the In-Service education program of the Jin-Ju District, Kyeong-Nam Branch of the Korean Nurses Association during the period from Oct. 1 to Nov. 30, 1985. The book of“The stress management education program”was developed by the investigators. With this book, we executed the 1st education through the lecture & showing an example, After 15 days from the 1st education, we mailed a reminding booklet to the individuals. (2nd education). Then, we mailed a questionnaire on 15th day from the 2nd education. Before and after the SMEP We measured the stress management ability & stress, and identified the affecting factors. Findings of this study are as follows ; 1. The 1st hypothesis that“the SMP will increase the. knowledge about the nurses' stress management”was supported (t= -6.60, p <.001) 2. The 2nd hypothesis that“the SMEP will increase the nurses' practice about the stress management”was rejected. 3. The 3rd hypothesis that“the SEMP will decrease the nurses' stress”was rejected. 4. The 4th hypothesis that“the higher the know-ledge about the stress management, the lower the nurses' stress”was rejected. 5. The 5th hypothesis that“the higher the degree of the practice about the stress management, the lower the nurses' stress”was supported. (r= - .2859, p<.05). 6. There were significant correlations between the knowledge about stress management and age (r= -.3717, p<.01), between the knowledge about stress management and the period of her work. (r= -.2897, p<0.5). There was significant difference in the knowledge about stress management between those who had married and those who had not. (t=2.82, p<.01) 7. There was significant difference in the practice about the stress management between those who had religion and those who had not. (t=2.7, p< .01) 8. There was significant difference in the stress according to the type or work. (t=6. 127, P <.05) There was significant correlation between the stress and supportive system. (r=-.2647, p<.05).
The main goal of this paper is to propose and to test a radio protocol based CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) for the purpose of enhancing the existing medical information system. The feature of the new medical information system, Medical Application Radio System(MARS), which operating in real time is the transmission of medical information in bi-direction between the hospital control office and patients mobile stations. MARS monitors patients linked to the network by radio and provides quick alarm, flexible documentation capabilities, asnd fast treatment for the analysis of collected medical data. The existing medical information system, radio telemetry system which transfers the message of patients to the CAP(Central Access Point) unit in one way at the speed of 9.6Kbps and operates a channel frequency bandwidth. To verify the Performance of the proposed system, we have performed the numerical analysis and have implemented a test system which consists of the 2.4Ghz radio transceiver and personal computer.
It is a well accepted fact that mental and physical health of nurses has a direct bearing or influence in their practice in the nursing profession. Recently, with this view in mind, the study of the mental and physical health of nurses has attracted the attention of many especially those in research hospitals. According to Soon Hyang Cha(1974) a nurse in clinical practice or service has a daily energy consumption of 39% and San Cho Chun (1974) asserts that Nurses'duties are more demanding on her emotionally than on her nursing technical skills. Many more studies has been made to this effect, here and abroad and similarly stressed the importance of mental and physical health for nurses. This study was made in an attempt to analyze the trend or tendency of the mental and physical health of nurses by employing the Cornell Medical Index (CMI) method. The data has been collected from May 1977 to November 1977, 200 nurses from 8 University hospitals and 200 nurses from general hospitals in Seoul, Theses who participated were selected at random. The data were tabulated and comparison made. The results were as follows : 1. Among nurses, the analysis based on the length of experience, it is apparent that, the longer or more experience one ha s, the more complaints they have. 2 The longer the nurses are engaged in nursing practice, the more they have problems in their digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory and nervous systems and are more prone to diseases, and get tired easier than those of shorter experience. But on the other hand it could be seen that younger nurses or nurses with less experience in the profession are more melancholic and prone to stress than those with longer experience.
The purpose of this study was to define the relationship between the leadership style of head nurses and the burnout level of nurses by taking into consideration the factors which influence the level of burnout and which show how burnout varies according to the leadership style of lead nurses. The subjects of the survey were 355 ward nurses and their 48 head nurses working in five university hospitals in Seoul. The nurses were surveyed by means of a questionnaire from Sept. 22 though Sept. 29, 1983. The Leadership Scale devised by Fleishman, and modified by Lee, and the Burnout Scale developed by Pines et al, and adapted to the Korean situation by Peek, were used as a basis of ;his survey This researcher subjected the questionnaire to a pre-test and to an internal reliability consistency test through item analysis. For the purpose of analysis of the data, the general characteristics were set at Mean and the general characteristics of head nurses in relation to the level of burnout of nurses was analysed by the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The relation between head nurses' general characteristics 3nd leadership style, the relation between nurses' general characteristics and level of burnout and the level of burnout of nurses according to the different style of leadership of head nurses were analysed by ANOVA. A summary of the results of the study is as follows. 1. Hypothesis:“That the burnout level of the nurse will be different according to the leadership style of the head nurse”was supported. 2. Analysis of the relationship between the head nurse's general characteristics and the leadership style of the head nurse showed that the leadership style of the head nurse was not related to age and experience as head nurse. 3. Analysis of the relationship of nurses' burnout levels to general characteristics of nurses showed statistically significant differences in burnout levels according to working departments, expected working period and reasons for selecting nursing as a profession. Also, the burnout level of nurses was negatively related to the head nurse's age and experience as a head nurse.
