Nondestructive Testing with Shearography (Shearography를 이용한 비파괴 검사)

  • Nondestructive testing(NDT) is one of the fundamental tools to improve the quality of commercial and industrial products. NDT is potentially a major application of interferometry. Interferometry(ESPI, Shearography, ect) has successfully been applied in various industrial environments such as high performance aircraft, home appliance, automotive, and laminates on engine structures, etc. Today's industry demands high performance components with toughest mechanical features and ultimate safety standards. Especially in automotive and aircraft industry the development process focuses on tailor-made design and solutions to meet customer specifications. To reconcile economy, ligh-weight construction has become a key issue. Many companies are looking for new advanced NDT techniques to archive cost efficiency over the limitations of classical methods. ESPI and shearography allow a rapid, full field and 3D-measurement without contact. In this paper recent applications of ESPI and shearography for NDT are described. Advanced features of classical techniques are specified and new applications in material and component testing are presented.

Deformation Measurement of Well Thinning Elbow by Using Shearography (전단간섭법을 이용한 감육 곡관부의 변형 계측)

  • In this study, the deformation oi wall thinning elbow is measured and the position of the internal thinning defect is found out by shearography. Shearography is an optical method which has applied to nondestructive testing (NDT) and the strain/stress and deformation analysis. This technique has the merit of the directly measuring the first derivative of displacement with sensitivity which can be adjusted by handling the tilt mirror in the interferometer. In this paper, we tested carbon steel pipe locally wall thinned and loaded internal pressure and the shearography was applied to measure the out-of-plane deformation of wall thinning elbow and to investigate the internal thinning defect of it. From the results, it was confirmed that this technique is proper to the practical application on the pipe line system with internal defect.

  • Recently the necessity of study on optical measuring method using laser to detect the pipeline's defect in nuclear facilities, chemical industries and power plants has been increased. Because laser light can be delivered to a remote area without any difficulties, the application of laser in many industries can solve several difficulties from the limitation of access in danger area and reduce the risks of workers. Therefore, we applied a new experimental technique to the measurement of internal defects in pressure vessels with the combination of shearography and image processing technique and detected the internal cracks of pressure vessels in the former paper. In this paper, we used the same optical system as in the former study and found the optimum shearing magnitude by comparing the real length of specimen with experimental results. A variety of conditions were applied to certify the validity of this method. Actually, several specimens which have different lengths and depths were used in this experiment under the three diverse pressure. Consequently, we have carried out this experiment to determine the limit of measurement ability with analyzing errors.

  • Eliminating the under-cut caused by interference between a mold and a product in designing a mold for in jection molding processes is a very important problem. In general, the under-cut problem can be avoided by side cores which are the principal members of a mold assembly. In this research, a procedure has been developed by which the side cores and the corresponding core and cavity plates of a mold are generated after identifying the mold faces preventing product faces from moving while being discharged. The characteristic features of the procedure suggested in this paper are as follows. One is that the interference faces between the product and the mold are derived only from the core plate(or cavity plate) alone without considering the product together. The other is that the algorithm in the designing of side cores and modifying molds, is very efficient because it uses Euler operations instead of Boolean operations.

Quantitative Comparison of Out-of-Plane Deformation Measured by Dual-Function Interferometer System (이중기능 간섭계에 의해 측정된 면외변형의 정략적 비교)

  • Dual-function interferometer is an interferometer that has all features of ESPI (electronic speckle pattern interferometry) and shearography in one interferometer setup. The deformatiou of an object is directly obtained by ESPI while the slope of the deformation of an object is obtained by shearography. If the result of shearography is divided by shearing amount and integrated by numerical analyzing, then finally the reconstructed deformation of an object that is the same as the results directly obtained by ESPI can be measured by shearography. In this study, rubber and alruminum plates are used as specimen and its out-of-plane deformation is measured by ESPI and shearography setup of the dual-function interferometer. Each of the results obtained by ESPI and shearography is compared by using numerical integration to the result of shearography. From this study, it is confirmed that the reconstructed deformation results obtained by numerical integration good agree with the results obtained by ESPI.

  • In this letter, a parity check based iterative IC scheme is proposed for LDPC coded MIMO systems. After the decoding procedures in each iteration of the proposed scheme, each decoded codeword is utilized for the IC procedures only when the ratio of the check nodes satisfying the parity check equations to the total number of check nodes is not smaller than the pre-defined threshold value. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme can achieve an improved BLER at the high SNR region compared to the conventional iterative IC scheme.

  • This paper proposes a non-destructive ESPI technique to quantitatively evaluate defects inside a semiconductor package. The inspection system consists of the ESPI system, a thermal loading system and an adiabatic chamber. The technique is high feasibility for non-destructive testing of a semiconductor and overcomes the weaknesses of previous techniques, such as time-consumption and difficult quantitative evaluation. Most defects are classified as delamination defects, resulting from the insufficient adhesive strength between layers and from non-homogeneous heat spread. Ninety percent of the tested samples had delamination defects which originated at the corner of the chip and nay be related to heat spread design.

  • For the intruder detection, a buried fiber-optic sensor based on fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer is demonstrated. We buried the sensor arm in a styrene board and exerted pressure on it. The pressure-induced deformation speed has almost linear relationship with the output frequencies of the interference signals, and about 4.25 Hz frequency change per 0.01m/s was obtained. Also it has been shown that the amplitude of frequency component increases according to the weight of mass.

Suppression and Recognition Reading Span Test (억제와 재인 읽기폭 검사)

  • The aim of this study is to make the recall-based reading span test(Daneman & Carpenter, 1980) into the recognition-based test for on-line measuring the capacity of the participant. In order to measure the concurrent validity, a series of experiments is performed with varying features of distractors consisting of the reading span test. In experiment 1, which included irrelevant words as distractor, low correlation was observed. And in experiment 2, including several types of distractors which interfere with the selection of target words, low correlation was observed too. But in experiment 3, including distractors no more relevant in the Present trial but relevant in previous trial, high correlation was observed. The results of this study have theoretical implications on the validity of the reading span test and practical implication in that this study provides the tool for the studies on individual differences in working memory capacity.
