  • Jurassic hornblende gabbo intrusives are distributed in Otanri, Chuncheon, and in Guwoonri, Hwacheon located in the northern part of Gyeonggi Massif. The intrusives composed mainly of amphiboles and plagioclase can be divided into two distinct rocks depending on the shape of amphiboles: (i) subspherical amphibole gabbro which has subspherical amphibole phenocryst as a major mafic phase(Sag); (ii) prismatic amphibole gabbro which has prismatic amphiboles as a principal mafic mineral(Pag). Subspherical amphiboles in Sag have higher Cr content and higher Mg($Mg+Fe^{2+}$) ratio relative to the prismatic amphiboles in Pag. This is indicative of conversion of pyroxene into amphibole with pyroxene pseudomorph. Oxygen isotopic results of plagioclase and amphibole separated from the hornblende gabbro suggest that theses minerals have experienced oxygen isotopic exchange with relatively heavy-$^{18}O$fluid for a long period, and magmatic fluid has been involved in the formation of subspherical amphiboles. Amphiboles in hornblende gabbro are composed of distinct species of pargasite, magnesiohornblende, actinolite, which formed at different stages.

  • Diagenetic black chert nodules occur in the Paleozoic dolostone in Susan, Jecheon, Korea. They reacted with dolomite to form alteration rim around the nodules during the contact metamorphism probably related to the intrusion of biotite granite. In the earlier stage of alteration, talc and calcite replaced both the chert and dolomite, which were subsequently replaced by tremolite. Significant mass of tremolite occurs along the horizon enriched with chert nodules. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy of the tremolite specimens revealed the elongated morphology of diverse aspect ratios coexisting in several mm scale. Non-asbestiform tremolite columns were also common as well as asbestiform fibrous bundles. Quantitative estimation of asbestos should be more cautious for naturally occurring materials because all the tremolite particles in the outcrop are not asbestiform. The occurrence of asbestiform tremolite in the Susan area indicates that a combination of chert-bearing dolostone, heat source, and aqueous fluids is one of the geological environments for the formation of asbestiform tremolite.

  • Hornblende gabbro-lamprophyre-diorite Complex in Guwoonri, Hwacheon distributes in a zonal pattern, where the diorite distributed along the margin of the Complex encompasses the hornblende gabbro body in the central part of the Complex, and lamprophyre intruded in vein along the boundary between diorite and hornblende gabbro. The hornblende gabbro in the central part of the Complex also shows a zonal distribution pattern, where hornblende gabbro containing subspherical amphibole phenocrysts as a major mafic mineral(Sag) surrounds hornblende gabbro with prismatic amphiboles as a principal mafic mineral(Pag). The zonal distributions observed in hornblende gabbro-lamprophyre-diorite Complex in Guwoonri resulted from two different geological processes. The zonal distribution among diorite, lamprophyre, and hornblende gabbro was due to intrusions of three distinct magmas derived from different degree of partial melting of a common source rock, whereas the zonal distribution shown within the hornblende gabbro body occupying the central part of the Complex resulted from an inward fractional crystallization of a single magma. Geochemical characteristics and mineral mode of hornblende gabbro, lamprophyre, and diorite indicate that these rocks formed from hydrous mafic to intermediate magma derived from partial melting of enriched mantle, which has been caused by infiltration of volatiles including water into mantle in plate margin.

  • Precambrian Jirisan gneiss complex suffered retrograde metamorphism ranging from granulite facies to the amphibolite facies and/or greenschist facies. Intrusive anorthositic rocks in gneiss complex are influenced by late metamorphism. Mafic mineral in anorthositic rock composed mainly of amphiboles, which can anticipate the information about metamorphic conditions and metamorphic facies. Amphiboles from anorthositic rock show subhedral to anhedral in shape and mostly blueish green and/or green in colour in plane polarized light. Some of brownish amphiboles show zonal texture with brownish to blueish green in color from core to rim. Reaction parts in clinopyroxene which exchange with amphibole. It suggests retrograde metamorphism and/or alteration. Amphiboles composing anorthositic rocks can be classified into two types depending on the size and occurrence of amphibole. The first type is microcrystalline amphibole occurring matrix [Group I: ferrohornblende]. The second type is amphibole with 1 mm or larger in size, which is usually occurred in the boundary between opaque mineral and plagioclase [Group II: ferropargasite]. Electron microscopic analyses base on the $Al^{vi}$ composition in amphiboles suggest that the metamorphic pressure of anorthositic rock was low with 5 kbar or less. Ti compositional range in amphibole and representing hornblende+ plagioclase+garnet+biotite+chlorite mineral assemblage suggest that metamorphic facies of anorthositic rock is in amphibolite facies.

  • We studied the geological occurrence, associated minerals, mineralogical properties and formation process of tremolites from two abandoned asbestos mines, Jungang (Sinsuk) and Daebosuksan, located in Boryoung area, Chungnam. Morphologically different tremolites such as long fibrous, needle-like, bladed and prismatic forms coexisted. Fibrous tremolite, known for its high toxieity to human health, was systematically analyzed by polarized light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The average length of tremolite fibers was 31.2 ${\mu}m$ although the maximum length of some asbestos was 210.0 ${\mu}m$. The average width and aspect ratio were 1.6 ${\mu}m$ and 19.9, respectively. Tremolite showed inclined extinction in the range of 6.1~20.2$^{\cric}$. X-ray diffraction patterns were slightly different between fibrous (asbestiform) and prismatic (non-asbestiform) tremolites. EPMA analysis of tremolites in the study area indicated extremely high Mg content with very low Fe content, close to the composition of tremolite in end-member in the tremolite-actinolite solid solution series. The formational conditions of asbestiform and non-asbestiform tremolite appear to be different. Asbestiform tremolite was estimated to have been formed in later stage.

  • The variation of Na(A), K, Na(M4), A l O and Al(VI)+Fe3++Ti+Cr in the zonal amphiboles from the amphibolites of the Hwanggangri area indicates that the tschermakite-, edenite- and glaucophane substitutions are higher in the rim than in the core, in which actinolite changes to hornblende with going outward from core to rim. The contents of substitutional elements of hornblende~ of three samples@l29-2, M76-2, M78), which include diopside and greenish brown hornblende and are thought to represent the highest metamorphic grade, are lower than those of rim homblendes of the lower metamorphic grade and are higher than those of core actinolite that they conform to the middle domain in those of the whole amphiboles. Considerations about the origin of zonal amphiboles are as follows. Firstly, two samples(R102-1, R210-9) have the same amphibole composition like core is actinolitic hornblende, and rim is magnesian hastingsite although plagioclases such as albite(R102-1) and labradorite (R210-9) show the wide compositional difference. It is impossible to produce both albite and labradorite by one metamorphic event. Judging from this wide compositional difference, the existence of zonal amphiboles does not indicate the miscibility gap but is thought to be the result of the polymetamorphism. Secondly, the crystallographically sharp and gradational interfaces between actinolite and hornblende fonned in the amphibolites rgardless of the distance from the granite. In case of the samples(R210-9, M128, M130) having the sharp interface between two amphiboles, the plagioclase show the compositions produced at the low grade and the medium grade. Because such variable compositions of plagioclase indicates the overprinting of metamorphism of higher metamorphic grade than that of the formation of miscibility gap, it implies that zonal amphiboles were formed by polymetarnorphism. In case of the gradational interface between two amphiboles, this texture is also thought to be the effect of polymetamorphism from the fact that this texture mainly occur near the granite and from the consideration of the metamporphic grade. The relationship between the compositional variations of the amphiboles and the pressure types of metamorphism suggests that actinolitic core is considered to be grown by the metamorphism of medium pressure, while hornblende rim is shown to have genetic relations with the metamorphism of low pressure type.

  • Lattice preferred orientation (LPO), which shows a specific lattice-orientation of minerals, is affected by the deformation conditions of minerals. Because of this reason, LPO is very useful to study the deformation conditions of the minerals and the rocks. In this study, we collected amphibole-rich rocks from the Geumgye Mountain, Chugye-ri, Yugu-eup, Chungcheongnamdo, located in the southwestern part of the Gyeonggi Massif, and analyzed the LPO of amphibole and plagioclase using electron backscattered diffraction. Two types of LPOs of amphibole, type I and type IV, were observed in Yugu amphibole-rich rocks. Our data suggest that the amphibole-rich rocks in Yugu were deformed by rigid body rotation regardless of the LPOs and grain size of amphibole, and the LPOs are considered to have been affected by the degree of deformation (i.e. strain). In the low strained amphibole-rich rock, a strong type I LPO and a large grain size of amphibole were observed. On the other hand, in the highly strained amphibole-rich rocks, a weak type IV LPO and a small grain size of amphibole were observed. The various degree of deformation observed in the Yugu amphibole-rich rocks were also observed in the adjacent peridotites, indicating that the rocks in Yugu experienced various levels of deformation.

  • Electron microscopy of the tremolite-actinolite series amphiboles from the naturally occurring asbestos locality showed the morphological diversity including fibrous, acicular, and prismatic. Very thin, long, and flexible fibers of constant width form ropy bundles or mats. Acicular particles are slightly thick, long, elastic, and easily separated from the bundle of parallel rods. Acicular fragments of lower aspect ratio are formed during the crushing of the amphibole prism. Morphological features of the amphiboles are different depending on their localities and vary in a specimen. Morphological continuum between amphibole fiber and prism requires the establishment of reliable identification criterions and sample preparation protocol based on the relation between carcinogenicity and morphological features.
