Morphology of EPDM-based Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (EPDM계 열가소성 가황체의 형태학적 연구)

  • The morphology of the thermoplastic vulcanizates prepared from ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer, polypropylene and high density polyethylene(HDPE) or ethylene based ionomer were studied. Blends were prepared in a laboratory internal mixer where EPDM was cured in the presence of PP and HDPE or ionomer under shear with dicumyl peroxide(DCP). The effects of DCP concentration and rubber/plastics composition were studied. In the morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a small amount of EPDM acted as a compatibilizer to HDPE and PP. It was also revealed that the dynamic vulcanization process could reduce the domain size of the crosslinked EPDM phase. When ionomer was added to EPDM/PP blend, the thermoplastic vulcanizate showed typical ductile fracture topology and the trend was more clearly observed when DCP contents and ionomer contents are higher.

  • Rubber products are aged like human complexion by the attack of oxygen, ultra violet, ozone, etc.. Aging is very important and also very complicated phenomenon to understand. This may explain the rarity of papers on this subject. In this study, we tried to understand the aging behavior of EPDM compared to that of natural rubber. We also compared the sulfur vulcanized system to the peroxide vulcanized one. In our experiment, the peroxide vulcanizates were more advantageous in aging than the sulfur vulcanizates. The authors belived that this study about the high performance EPDM would be applicable to rubber industry.

  • It goes to be serious with environmental pollution cause waste rubber. That is why there are lot of studies for efficient recycle. The purpose of this study is to improve the physical properties of EPDM powder by using De-link system. We changed on the size of waste rubber powder and De-link contents. we examined the physical, rheological, mechanical properties. And also examined cross-link state at various De-link. Also we carried out morphological studies after making the weather strip's feature by optical microscope.

A Study on the Friction Characteristics of Vulcanized Natural Rubber Plate (가황된 천연고무 판재의 마찰특성에 관한 연구)

  • The friction characteristics of natural rubber plates under various conditions including sliding speed, normal force, hardness, lubrication conditions and thickness of plate are analyzed experimentally. The frictional force and normal force are measured by a tester pin and a load ceil with strain gages. Experimental results suggest that the coefficient of friction decreases with increasing the hardness of rubber and decreasing the thickness of plate. The effect of sliding speed is not significant over the speed range employed. The coefficient of friction is found to be about 0.1 under oil lubrication condition and varies from 0.9 to 3.9 under no lubrication condition.

  • In this study, we focused on development of the all-in-one case insulation for end-burning solid rocket motors. Material of insulation used unvulcanized rubber based on EPDM/kevlar. In case of boots insulation, preforms was made by using hot press molding, and then the tape was inserted between two preforms for all-in-one curing in the case. Finally bladder method was applied for curing of insulation.

  • The butadiene rubber(BR) blends with chloroprene rubber(CR) were prepared by mechanical mixing method. Cure characteristics, mechanical properties, ozone resistance properties and dynamic mechanical properties were subsequently examined. The properties of ozone resistance of pure BR was significantly improved through blending with 50 wt% CR. Dynamic characteristics determined from a Rheovibron generally showed two glass transition($T_g$) for the entire blends, $tan{\delta}$ peak monotonically shifted toward the higher temperature with the increasing content of CR. Optimum cure time of compound was significantly lengthened with loading of CR.

  • Radiation technology is currently used in a number of industrial processes such as sterilization, cross linking of polymer, food irradiation, rubber vulcanization in the tire manufacturing, contaminated medical waste, etc. Gamma ray and electron beam are the key examples of well-established economical applications of radiation processes. The purpose of this paper is to review the recent technological trends and activities for radiation processes in order for the industrial end users to better understand, and obtain useful information about the technology. It is clear that the radiation processing technology has potential for a variety of the industrial applications.

The Characteristics and Application of Virgin FKM Rubber/Recycled FKM Rubber Blend (재생 FKM Rubber/신재 FKM Rubber 블렌드의 특성 및 응용)

  • Virgin fluororubber(FKM) that is one of the highly-functionalized and expensive special rubber, and recycled FKM that is crushed by high temperature shear-crushing technique from recycled FKM were blended with the various mixing ratio to rubber blends. The cure characteristics and physical properties of these blended rubber compounds were investigated with various contents of recycled FKM and physical properties fur heat and fuels were also measured. Recycled FKM which is prepared by high temperature shear-crushing technique were blended to virgin FKM with the range of $0{\sim}50$ phr. The physical properties indicated that the rubber blend of recycled FKM with 30 phr turned out to be the best compound showing good dispersibility, heat resistance and fuel resistance and inexpensive in price.

  • Material characteristics and lifetime evaluation are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. In this paper, the material test and accelerated heat aging test were carried out to predict the useful life of NBR and EPDM rubber mount for a compression motor which is used in a refrigerator. In order to investigate the effects of heat-aging on the material properties, crosslink density, modulus at 100% strain, stress-strain curves were obtained from uniaxial and equi-biaxial tensile tests. The change of compression set were used for assessment of the useful life and the time to threshold value were plotted against the reciprocal of absolute temperature to give the Arrhenius plot. The useful life at variable temperatures are obtained in the Arrhenius relationship.

Improvement of the Filler Dispersion in Silica-Filled SBR Compounds Using Low Molecular Weight Polybutadiene Treated with Maleic Anhydride (Maleic Anhydride로 처리된 저분자량 폴리부타디엔을 이용한 실리카로 보강된 SBR 배합물에서 충전제 분산성 항상)

  • Influence of low molecular weight polybutadiene (liquid PB) treated with maleic anhydride on properties of a silica-filled SBR compounds was studied. Silica dispersion was improved by adding liquid PB. The liquid PB treated with maleic anhydride (liquid MAPB) was found to be more effective for the improvement of silica dispersion than the liquid PB without maleic anhydride (liquid NPB). Viscosity of the SBR compound decreased by adding the liquid PB. The crosslink density decreased with increase of the liquid PB content and the cure rate became slower with increasing the liquid PB content. Considering the experimental results, it was believed that addition of small amount of the liquid PB (less than 5 phr) was desirable to improve properties of silica-filled SBR compounds.
