  • This study aimed to review Korean-written and English-written studies on music interventions for family caregivers of patients in medical settings. Electronic databases were searched for studies published through 2016, using the keywords of music intervention, family caregivers, and specified settings. A total of 43 studies, five Korean-written and 38 English-written studies, were selected. The results showed that caregivers were the sole participants in five studies (family-only), and caregivers and patients co-participated in 38 studies (family-patient). While diversified types of family participation were included in the English-written studies dating back to the late 1980s, the Korean-written studies were the only ones to include patients as co-participants with their caregivers. Studies with family-only participation tended to be conducted in palliative care units and usually included the spouses of the patients. Meanwhile, studies with family-patient participation tended to be conducted in NICU or cancer units and usually included the parents of the patients. Furthermore, studies with family-only participation tended to apply passive music activities, and those with family-patient participation tended to use active music activities. The results of this study present baseline data on how family-centered care can be included in music interventions in medical settings in Korea, suggesting future studies to systematically analyze music interventions for family caregivers in terms of diversified patient- and caregiver-related factors.

  • Objective : In this study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of family-centered intervention conducted with caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in South Korea through a systematic literature review. Methods : Previous studies published from 2011 to 2021 were searched through RISS, KISS, and DBpia. The search terms applied included "autism spectrum" OR "general developmental disorder" OR "high-functioning autism" OR "Asperger's" AND "parent education" OR "family-centered intervention" OR "parent coaching" OR "parent training" OR "family participation." A total of 11 experimental studies were chosen based on the selection criteria. Results : According to the findings on the general characteristics of the study participants, intervention strategies, and effects of the intervention, it was observed that the majority of children with ASD who participated in the study were preschool-aged, and the majority of participating caregivers were mothers. The effects of family-centered interventions were evident in both children and parents. In children, the most significant effects were observed in interaction and communication skills. In parents, a reduction in parenting stress and an improvement in parenting efficacy were observed. The intervention strategies employed in the study varied, with sensory integration intervention, responsive communication, and interaction-centered intervention being the most commonly used, followed by developmental-centered intervention, positive behavior support (PBS), and parent-mediated intervention based on pivotal response treatment (PRT). Conclusion : The results of this study are significant in that they confirm that family-centered intervention is effective not only in improving the functioning of children with autism spectrum disorder, but also in reducing parenting stress and enhancing parenting efficacy, and provide evidence for clinical use.

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a sensory integration intervention on the sensory processing and posture control of children with developmental delays and a simultaneous family-centered coaching intervention on their parents' parenting efficacy. Methods : This study adopted a multiple probe design across four children aged five to six with developmental delays and their parents. A sensory integration intervention and a family-centered coaching intervention were employed twice a week in a total of 16 sessions over 8 weeks. Sensory profiles were evaluated, and the Korean version of the Parenting Sense of Competence was used before and after the interventions, and changes in post-intervention posture control were measured using Biorescue equipment. Results : During the intervention period, weight support in the sitting, Sitting with eyes closed, and standing positions evaluated using Biorescue was higher than two standard deviations from the baseline. After the interventions, all children showed enhanced sensory processing. Conclusion : Sensory integration and family centered coaching interventions have positive effects on the sensory processing and posture control of children with developmental delays and on their parents' parenting efficacy.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of nursing information on the level of need fulfillment and anxiety of the emergency patient's family members. The quasi-experimental study was designed using a noneqivalent control group non-synchronized design. During the first period, 30 subjects were assigned to the control group and 25 to the experimental group at a late period. The experimental group was provided with nursing information via guide booklet designed by the researcher. The control group received only routine care. Data was collected from January 31 to April 16 in 1996 at the K hospital in Taegu and analysed by chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation with SAS program. The instruments used for this study were the Family Needs Scale developed by Jung and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory developed by Spielberger. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. The first hypothesis that the family members who received nursing information will have greater need fulfillment than family members who did not receive nursing information was supported. 2. The second hypothesis that the family members who received nursing information will have lower anxiety level than family members who did not receive nursing information was not supported. 3. The third hypothesis that the more the need of family member of emergency patient was met, the lower the anxiety level, was not supported. In conclusion, it was proved that nursing information about the emergency room provides family members with more need fulfillment, but did not decrease the anxiety level.

The subjects of this study were 176 college students from 3 colleges located in S-si and M-si and the data were collected over the period of 20 days from December 1 through December 20, 2016. As their Family Functioning increased, their Self-differentiation increased (${\beta}=667$, p<.001); as their Self-differentiation increased, their Smartphone Addiction decreased (${\beta}=-.361$, p<.001); moreover, their Self-differentiation fully mediated the relationship between their Family Functioning and Smartphone Addiction (Z=-2.336, p<.001). To alleviate the Smartphone Addiction of college students, their Family Functioning and Self-differentiation need to be improved.

The data were collected from April 4 to August 15, 2011. The collected data were analyzed by the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. The mean score of dependence was 139.6 which means their experience of high level dependence. The mean score of burden was 84.2 which means their family caregivers experience of high level burden. Positive correlation was found between dependence of elderly peritoneal dialysis patients and burden on their family caregivers (r=.61, p=.000). It is considered that the study emphasizes for the healthcare providers to recognize dependence as the important nursing issue for elderly CAPD patients. And it is necessary to develop an nursing intervention for decreasing dependence of elderly CAPD patients and burden on their family caregivers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine posttraumatic growth (PTG) in family caregivers of patients with cancer. Methods: Participants included 201 family caregivers of cancer patients who are treated at outpatient clinics and oncology wards of a university hospital and two general hospitals in Busan, Korea. The study instrument was the Korean version of the posttraumatic growth inventory (K-PTGI). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's test using the SPSS 21 for Windows. Results: The mean score of PTG was 3.10. The factor with the highest score was "Changes to self-perception" (3.15), while the one with the lowest was "Increase in spiritual interest" (2.88). There were significant differences in PTG, depending on age, religion, importance of religious life and perceived level of daily difficulties. Conclusion: Family caregivers also experience PTG when their loved ones are diagnosed with cancer. According to these findings, it is necessary to develop a spiritual nursing program to help family caregivers growth from the experience of attending patients with cancer.
