This paper aims to suggest a facet-based ontology model that can help sort and access records of dispersed families to address these problems. The facet systematically defines the categories of target concepts, which can create diverse and multiple access points. Using the top-down and bottom-up approaches, the facets, which consist of five upper classes and 18 lower classes, were derived for the records of dispersed families. The proposed ontology model was evaluated by real users. The results show that, overall, the ontology is complete and relevant in terms of access points, availability of context information of the records, and description elements for search and use of the records on dispersed families.
This Study explored three issues in regard to the determinants of community service utilization among family caregivers of the dependent older persons. First, the differences between users and nonusers of community services were compared regarding to predisposing, enabling, need characteristics of the primary caregiver as well as the elder care recipient. Second, the variables which determined the contact of community services were examined. Third, the influence of the variables on duration of the community services among users was also examined. The data collected from 164 family caregivers were used for analyses. Findings suggest that community service users had higher education and higher emotional support, lower family income than nonusers. The level of cognitive impairment of the elder was also higher for users than nonusers. The entry into community services is more likely for elders cared for by caregivers who have higher educational attainment, lower family income and lower level of instrumental support. Once interaction terms for relationship between need factors and social support are entered, caregivers with poorer level of his/her perceived physical health and lower level of instrumental support are more likely to report use of community services. Among those reporting contact with services, more extensive use occurs for caregivers with lower emotional support and lower depression. The entry of interaction terms for relationship between need and support reveals that the combination of lower support(instrumental and emotional) and elder's greater physical impairment are associated with longer period of community service use. However, the effect of caregivers' depression followed the different pattern. For caregivers with greater depression, more supports are related with more service utilization. According to the results, implications for research and practice are discussed.
The purpose of this convergence study was to evaluate and to identify predictors of health-related quality of life(HRQoL) of families with cancer survivor(FCS) focusing on the comparison of families with cancer patient(FCP) receiving treatments. The research was conducted with the data for 153 FCS and 115 FCP taken from the 6th wave of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The independent variables included socio-demographic, health related, psychological and social factors. The data were analyzed by hierarchical multiple regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 18.0. The results showed different patterns of predictors on the HRQoL of FCS and FCP. In FCS, the statistically significant factors were stress(${\beta}=-.192$, p<.05) and exclusion from economic activities(${\beta}=-.191$, p<.05). Therefore, families of cancer patients also need appropriate interventions for each stage of the disease.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between public care and family care. Public care for older adults began in 2008 with the implementation of the Long-Term Care insurance in South Korea. Although the expansion of public care has the purpose of reducing the care burden for the family, it is not easy to say whether the developments of public care system reduce the amount of family care for older family members. Theoretically, public care and family care are expected to have various relationships depending on the degree of the role and function(substitution, hierarchical compensatory, task specific, supplementation, complementarity). And literatures have showed inconsistent results depending on the country, data, and methods. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between two care types focusing on home care services for older persons. Analyses were based on data from the second(2008) to sixth(2016) waves of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA). To investigate elderly care dynamics in the households, we pooled the data for four changes between two periods(2008-2010, 2010-2012, 2012-2014, and 2014-2016). This study used an analytic sample of 262 older adults, who are aged 55 over and experienced public care at least one point of time. We used Fixed-Effects(FE) model to analyze the differences within the same individuals under the condition that time-invariant unobserved factors are controlled. This study distinguished the cases of entry into public care and other cases of exiting public care. The results showed that older people who are dependent on public care are less dependent on family care than before. In both entry and exit groups, negative relations were maintained, but in the entering stage of public care, the degree of negative relations was relatively small, whereas in the stage of maintaining or departing from public care, relatively negative relations were strong. At the beginning periods, even though public care increased, family care did not decrease significantly. On the other hand, at the time of ending public care and relying on family care, family care increased significantly. The results of this study show that the relationship between public care and family care is close to hierarchical compensatory model and varies according to the stage of caring transition. Also, it was found that the cases of transition from public care to family care have the biggest burden of elderly care than other groups.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in family cohesion and family adaptability between college students and their parents to identify the factors that affect family cohesion and family adaptability using a descriptive research study design. The subjects of this study were 197 college students and their parents. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression analysis by SPSS for Windows (ver. 22.0). The mean of the family function index of the subjects was $7.42{\pm}2.28$ on the scale of 1 to 10, and that of the normal family functional group was 65.48%. There was no significant difference in family cohesion between the college students and their parents, and family adaptability was significantly different in discipline(t=-3.100, p<.01) and role(t=.212, p<.05). The factors affecting the family adaptability of the students were the sharing of family activities, emotional intimacy and attending family events, which showed a combined explanatory power of 45.9%. The factors affecting the family cohesion of the parents were housework assignment, emotional intimacy and attending family events, which showed a combined explanatory power of 51.4%. Family emotional intimacy and attending family events, as well as the sharing of family activities, were found to be important to the family adaptability of the college students and housework assignment was found to be important to the family cohesion of the parents.

This research focused on the internet addiction and family communication in adolescents. The subjects were the 394 middle school students living in Gwangju. Data were analyzed with Frequency, Percentage, Mean, Std, Cronbach's $\alpha$, T-test, one way ANOVA, Duncan's Test, Pearson's Correlation, and Multiple Regression using SPSS/PC WIN 14.0 program. The major findings were as follows: 1. Schoolboys internet addiction were higher than schoolgirls. Open communication was higher than median but problem communication was slightly lower than median. 2. The adolescents' internet addiction showed significant difference according to sex, parent's absence frequency, the level of living, parent's attitude about internet, the motive, the purpose, and the times required for internet. 3. Family communications showed significant difference according to internet addiction level. 4. Open communication was influenced by the level of living, parent's attitude about internet, the times required for internet and the level of internet-addiction and was explained about 19% by these variables. Problem communication was influenced by the level of internet addiction and the level of living and was explained about 14% by these variables.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the family composition of terminally ill cancer patients admitted to the hospice unit and how it affects their hospice care. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of terminal cancer patients who died in one hospice unit between January 2009 and March 2014. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were examined, and any different made by their marital status was evaluated. We calculated the time interval between cancer diagnosis and hospice admission and the survival period from hospice admission to death and analyzed their association with family composition. Results: When divided by the median time of 13 months between diagnosis and admission, Group B (>13 months) had a significantly higher proportion of patients living with their spouses; (P<0.01). The main decision maker was a spouse (52.9%) in Group B; (P=0.04). Conclusion: Among the characteristics of the family composition, the presence of spouse was an important factor associated with admission to a hospice unit. Clinicians need to be aware of the impact of marital status on end-of-life care. This study indicates that it is helpful to understand family composition of terminallyill cancer patients for an effective palliative and hospice care.
This study examined the factors affecting family caregiver's preference for utilization of community care services among those who are caring for 65+ elderly parents, and aimed to show how social eldercare services would be settled in Korea. Help-seeking behavior model developed by Anderson and Newman(1973) was used to analyze the factors affecting their preference for utilizing the community care service among 283 family caregivers. Frequency, Chi-square, and Multinominal logistic analysis on SAS 6.12 was used. According to the results, about 90% of the family caregivers have preference for community and institute care services. In community care service, about a half comprise the preference with charge while the other without charge. However, about 90% of those for institute care service show their willingness to pay for the service. Also, a majority of caregivers like to rely on social eldercare service, rather than family as exclusively responsible, against long-term care for their elderly parents. Multinominal analysis demonstrates that use versus nonuse of community care services is primarily affected by predisposing factors(including age, carer-caree closeness, and familism) and need factors (including economic or psychological burden of eldercare, and additional role for family care). Enabling factors, such as family income level, economic support from other family members and siblings, and supportive care-helpers, are mainly associated with the preferences of free versus charge in service use. These findings provide some implications and suggestions for the development of social eldercare services in our aging society.
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between child poverty rate and family policy expenditure of welfare states (focusing on OECD countries). We analyzed not only the total social & family policy expenditures but the components of the family policy expenditure. OECD SOCX and calculated data from the LIS & OECD data were utilized for child and family policy expenditures and the poverty rate. One-way correlation and cluster analysis were employed for the analysis. The analytic results are as follows: Southern European and Anglo-Saxon countries' child poverty rates were higher and Scandinavian countries' child poverty rates were lower than any other clusters. The countries with high child poverty rate had higher child poverty rate than the entire nation's poverty rate, but Scandinavian countries' child poverty rate was lower. There was a strong correlation between family policy expenditure and child poverty rate. Especially the service expenditure and leave benefit expenditure were highly correlated with child poverty rate. On the other hand, cash expenditure was not significantly correlated with child poverty rate. We can suggest the policy implications from these results. Based on the analytic results, policy implications that the government should increase the family policy budget, especially the budget for family services and leave benefit to decrease child poverty rate and should make effort to support the employment of parents through policies such as active labor market strategies can be suggested.
The purpose of this study is to empirically test some hypotheses derived from the alliance model of the family, which focuses on theorizing situations in which family members simultaneously compete with other members within a family and rivals in society to maximize their statuses in the family and in society. Specifically, associations between wives' level of income relative to that of their husbands and each spouse's satisfaction with family relationships were examined, using the first wave of Korea Welfare Panel Study having been conducted in 2006 by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. The results of the analyses showed that three ones among four research hypotheses were supported. Wives' satisfaction with family relationships was negatively associated with their relative level of income. This pattern strongly appeared among wives from lower class families rather than among wives from middle/upper class families. Relationship between wives' relative level of income and husbands' satisfaction with family relationships was likely to be bi-directional among husbands from middle/upper class families. Unlike the author's expectation, however, this bi-directional relationship was not observed among husbands from lower class families.
