Asymmetric Diffusion Model for Protein Spot Matching in 2-DE Image (2차원 전기영동 영상의 단백질 반점 정합을 위한 비대칭 확산 모형)

  • The spot detection phase of the 2-DE image analysis program segments a gel image into spot regions by an image segmentation algorithm and fits the spot regions to a spot shape model and quantifies the spot informations for the next phases. Currently the watershed algorithm is generally used as the segmentation algorithm and there are the Gaussian model and the diffusion model for the shape model. The diffusion model is closer to real spot shapes than the Gaussian model however spots have very various shapes and especially an asymmetric formation in x-coordinate and y-coordinate. The reason for asymmetric formation of spots is known that a protein could not be diffused completely because the 2-DE could not be processed under the ideal environment usually. Accordingly we propose an asymmetric diffusion model in this paper. The asymmetric diffusion model assumes that a protein spot is diffused from a disc at initial time of diffusing process, but is diffused asymmetrically for x-axis and y-axis respectively as time goes on. In experiments we processed spot matching for 19 gel images by using three models respectively and evaluated averages of SNR for comparing three models. As averages of SNR we got 14.22dB for the Gaussian model, 20.72dB for the diffusion model and 22.85dB for the asymmetric diffusion model. By experimental results we could confirm the asymmetric diffusion model is more efficient and more adequate for spot matching than the Gaussian model and the diffusion model.

Application of Gradient-Enhanced Kriging to Aerodynamic Coefficients Modeling With Physical Gradient Information (물리적 구배 정보를 이용한 공력계수 모형화를 위한 GE 크리깅의 적용)

  • The six-DOF aerodynamic coefficients of a missile entail inherent physical gradient constraints originated from the geometric characteristics of a cylindrical fuselage. To effectively adopt the freely available gradient information in aerodynamic coefficients modeling, this research employed gradient-enhanced (GE) Gaussian process. To investigate the accuracy of aerodynamic coefficients predicted with gradients information, we compared two Gaussian-process-based models: ordinary and GE Gaussian process models with and without gradient information, respectively. As a result, we found that GE Gaussian process models were able to comply with imposed gradient information and more accurate than ordinary Gaussian process models. However, we also found that GE Gaussian process modeling cannot handle gradient information continuously and ends up with more samples due to additional gradient information.

  • This paper proposes a sequential state estimation model consisting of continuous and discrete variables, as a way of generalizing all discrete-state factorial HMM, and gives a design of gait motion model based on the idea. The discrete state variable implements a Markov chain that models the gait dynamics, and for each state of the Markov chain, we created a Gaussian process over the space of the continuous variable. The Markov chain controls the switching among Gaussian processes, each of which models the rotation or various views of a gait state. Then a particle filter-based algorithm is presented to give an approximate filtering solution. Given an input vector sequence presented over time, this finds a trajectory that follows a Gaussian process and occasionally switches to another dynamically. Experimental results show that the proposed model can provide a very intuitive interpretation of video-based gait into a sequence of poses and a sequence of posture states.

  • A generalized linear mixed model is an extension of a generalized linear model that allows random effect as well as provides flexibility in developing a suitable model when observations are correlated or when there are other underlying phenomena that contribute to resulting variability. We describe maximum likelihood estimation methods for logistic regression models that include random effects - the Laplace approximation, Gauss-Hermite quadrature, adaptive Gauss-Hermite quadrature, and pseudo-likelihood. Applications are provided with social science problems by analyzing the effect of mental health and life satisfaction on volunteer activities from Korean welfare panel data; in addition, we observe that the inclusion of random effects in the model leads to improved analyses with more reasonable inferences.

  • Graphical models can be used as an intuitive tool for modeling a complex stochastic system with a large number of variables related each other because the conditional independence between random variables can be visualized as a network. Graphical least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) is considered to be effective in avoiding overfitting in the estimation of Gaussian graphical models for high dimensional data. In this paper, we consider the model selection problem in graphical LASSO. Particularly, we compare various model selection criteria via simulations and analyze a real financial data set.

Hydrological Forecasting Based on Hybrid Neural Networks in a Small Watershed (중소하천유역에서 Hybrid Neural Networks에 의한 수문학적 예측)

  • In this study, Radial Basis Function(RBF) Neural Networks Model, a kind of Hybrid Neural Networks was applied to hydrological forecasting in a small watershed. RBF Neural Networks Model has four kinds of parameters in it and consists of unsupervised and supervised training patterns. And Gaussian Kernel Function(GKF) was used among many kinds of Radial Basis Functions(RBFs). K-Means clustering algorithm was applied to optimize centers and widths which ate the parameters of GKF. The parameters of RBF Neural Networks Model such as centers, widths weights and biases were determined by the training procedures of RBF Neural Networks Model. And, with these parameters the validation procedures of RBF Neural Networks Model were carried out. RBF Neural Networks Model was applied to Wi-Stream basin which is one of the IHP Representative basins in South Korea. 10 rainfall events were selected for training and validation of RBF Neural Networks Model. The results of RBF Neural Networks Model were compared with those of Elman Neural Networks(ENN) Model. ENN Model is composed of One Step Secant BackPropagation(OSSBP) and Resilient BackPropagation(RBP) algorithms. RBF Neural Networks shows better results than ENN Model. RBF Neural Networks Model spent less time for the training of model and can be easily used by the hydrologists with little background knowledge of RBF Neural Networks Model.

  • This paper discusses a method for getting a basis set of estimable functions of model parameters in a two-way fixed effects model. Since the fixed effects model has more parameters than those that can be estimated, model parameters are not estimable. So it is not possible to make inferences for nonestimable functions of parameters. When the assumed model of matrix notation is reparameterized by the estimable functions in a basis set, it also discusses how to use projections for the estimation of estimable functions.

Rapid Estimation of the Aerodynamic Coefficients of a Missile via Co-Kriging (코크리깅을 활용한 신속한 유도무기 공력계수 추정)

  • Surrogate models have been used for the rapid estimation of six-DOF aerodynamic coefficients in the context of the design and control of a missile. For this end, we may generate highly accurate surrogate models with a multitude of aerodynamic data obtained from wind tunnel tests (WTTs); however, this approach is time-consuming and expensive. Thus, we aim to swiftly predict aerodynamic coefficients via co-Kriging using a few WTT data along with plenty of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data. To demonstrate the excellence of co-Kriging models based on both WTT and CFD data, we first generated two surrogate models: co-Kriging models with CFD data and Kriging models without the CFD data. Afterwards, we carried out numerical validation and examined predictive trends to compare the two different surrogate models. As a result, we found that the co-Kriging models produced more accurate aerodynamic coefficients than the Kriging models thanks to the assistance of CFD data.

  • We propose a multi-state model for analyzing semi-competing risks data with interval-censored or missing intermediate events. This model is an extension of the 'illness-death model', which composes three states, such as 'healthy', 'diseased', and 'dead'. The state of 'diseased' can be considered as an intermediate event. Two more states are added into the illness-death model to describe missing events caused by a loss of follow-up before the end of the study. One of them is a state of 'LTF', representing a lost-to-follow-up, and the other is an unobservable state that represents the intermediate event experienced after LTF occurred. Given covariates, we employ the Cox proportional hazards model with a normal frailty and construct a full likelihood to estimate transition intensities between states in the multi-state model. Marginalization of the full likelihood is completed using the adaptive Gaussian quadrature, and the optimal solution of the regression parameters is achieved through the iterative Newton-Raphson algorithm. Simulation studies are carried out to investigate the finite-sample performance of the proposed estimation procedure in terms of the empirical coverage probability of the true regression parameter. Our proposed method is also illustrated with the dataset adapted from Helmer et al. (2001).

Investigation of Turbulence Structures and Development Turbulence Model Based upon a Higher Order Averaging Method (고차평균법에 의한 난류구조의 규명 및 난류모델의 개발)

  • The averaged non-linear term in the turbulence equations, suggested by Yeo (1987), is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. It was formulated by applying the filtering concepts to the convolution integral average definition with the Gaussian response function. This filtering approach seems to be superior to the conventional averaging methods in which all four terms at the doubly average vol must be defined separately, and it also gives a very useful tool in understanding the turbulence structures. By theoretically analyzing the newly derived description for the averaged non-linear terms, it is found that the vortex stretching can be explicitly accounted for. Furthermore, comparisons of the correlation coefficients based on the experimental data show that the vortex stretching acts most significantly on the turbulence residual stress. Thus, it strongly supports the claim that the vortex stretching is essential in the transfer of turbulence. In addition. a general form of turbulent energy models in LES is derived, by which it is recognized that the Smagorinsky, the vorticity and the SGS energy models are not distinctive.
