  • 비선형광학 결정을 이용한 optical parametric generation(OPG)은 coherent tunable radiation을 얻는 방법으로 매우 효과적이다. Beta barium borate(BBO) 결정은 비선형성이 클 뿐만 아니라 광손상문턱이 높고 자외선에서부터 근 적외선영역까지(2 -0.2$mu extrm{m}$) 투명하여 optical parametric oscillation(OPO)이나 OPG/OPA(optical parametric generation/amplification)에 많이 활용되고 있다.[1-2] 분광학적 연구와 여러 가지 응용 측면에서 넓은 영역의 파장가변이 손쉽고 높은 에너지를 갖는 pico 초coherent source는 중요하며, 이는 결정의 비선형성을 이용하여 공진기를 구성하지 않고서도 OPG/OPA를 통하여 실현 가능하다. Output power characteristics of a CW Nd:YVO4/KTP laser pumped by a tunable Ti:Sapphire laser (파장가변 티타늄 사파이어 레이저로 펌핑하는 연속발진 Nd:YVO4/KTP 레이저의 출력 특성)

  • We measured the absorption rate of a Nd:YVO$_4$crystal with a thickness of 1 mm and the output power characteristics of a cw Nd:YVO$_4$/KTP laser with respect to the change of wavelength and the polarizations of a tunable Ti:sapphire pump laser with a linewidth of 0.2 nm. In the case of S-polarization (E┴$\pi$) and P-polarization (E∥$\pi$) of a pump laser, the maximum absorption rate of the crystal was 82% at 809.4 nm and 98% at 808.8 nm, and slope efficiencies for the output power of the Nd:YVO$_4$laser (1064 nm) were 43% and 52%, respectively. The maximum Nd:YYO$_4$laser output power of 516 mW was obtained from the P-polarization pump laser of 1000 mW. As a result of an intracavity frequency-doubling, slope efficiency for the output power of the Nd:YVO$_4$/KTP green laker (532nm) was 23% and the maximum output power of 205 mW with the beam quality (M$^2$) of 1.42 was obtained from the P-polarization pump laser of 1000 mW.

  • We have developed a mode-locked ultra-short pulse C $r^{4+}$:YAG laser, as well as a continuous wave C $r^{4+}$:YAG laser. The laser was pumped by a Nd:YAG laser and its characteristics were investigated. In continuous wave mode, we obtained as much as 600 mW at 1.436 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with pumping power of 6 W, by using an output coupler with a reflectivity of 98%. The power slope efficiency was 10%, when the gain medium was cooled to 19$^{\circ}C$. The tuning range was varied from 1.39 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the maximum power was 400 mW at 1.492 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with a 3-plate birefringent filter. The C $r^{4+}$:YAG laser was mode-locked by a Kerr lens mode locking method. Mode locking at 1.436 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$was initiated by slightly rocking a mirror mount. But the pulses were very unstable because of the strong water absorption at this region. So we shifted the lasing wavelength to 1.492 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ by using a 3-plate birefringent filter. Then we obtained stable state mode-locking with the maximum average power of 280 mW for a pumping power of 6 W. The pulse width of 43 fs was measured using an autocorrelator and the repetition rate was 104.5 MHz.

Performance Evaluation of Mid-IR Spectrometers by Using a Mid-IR Tunable Optical Parametric Oscillator (중적외선 광 파라메트릭 발진기를 이용한 중적외선 분광기 성능 평가)

  • We have used a mid-IR (mid-infrared) continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), developed previously and described in Ref. 12, to build a performance-evaluation setup for a mid-IR spectrometer. The used CW OPO had a wavelength tuning range of $ 2.5-3.6{\mu}m$ using a pump laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a fan-out MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) nonlinear crystal in a concentric cavity design. The OPO was combined with a near-IR integrating sphere and a Fourier-transform IR optical spectrum analyzer to build a performance-evaluation setup for mid-IR spectrometers. We applied this performance-evaluation setup to evaluating a mid-IR spectrometer developed domestically, and demonstrated the capability of evaluating the performance, such as spectral resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, spectral stray light, and so on, based on this setup.

The Operating Characteristics of DBR-LD with Wavegudies Coupling Structure (도파로 결합 구조에 따른 DBR-LD의 동작특성)

  • In this paper, we described the fabrication and the performance of wavelength tunable distributed bragg reflector (DBR) laser diode (LD), having different waveguide coupling mechanisms; integrated-twin-guide (ITG) DBR-LD and butt coupled (BT) DBR-LD. This deviceis fabricated by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) growth and planar buried heterostructure (PBH)-type transverse current confinement structure. The result of measurement, the optical performance of BT-DBR-LD is better over 2 times than that of ITG-DBR-LD at the variation of threshold current and output power, and slop efficiency due to the higher coupling efficiency of the butt coupled structure than the integrated twin guide structure. The maximum wavelength tuning range is about 7.2nm for ITG DBR-LD and 7.4nm for BT DBR-LD. Both types of lasers have a very high yield of single mode operation with a side-mode suppression ratio of more than 35dB.

Performance Analysis of the WDM Protocol for the Multicast Traffics (멀티캐스트 트래픽 처리를 위한 WDM 프로토콜의 성능분석)

  • In this paper, a dynamic minislot reservation protocol(DMRP) is proposed and analyzed to improve the performance of the multicast traffic processing in wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) networks. For the proposed protocol analysis, the WDM network architecture with a passive star coupler is used. One pair of transceiver is used for a control channel and the ocher pair of transceiver with one fixed transmitter and one tunable receiver are used for data transmission. In this protocol. the packets which fail to have successful transmission in the present time slot due to data channel and destination collisions, have priority to have successful reservation in the contention-less minislots of the next time slot. Therefore, protocols have improved the throughput and the system delay performance caused by the reduced probabilities of control channel contentions and destination collisions probability. Today, the efficient protocol that can handle the various types of data traffic is needed. As results, the DMRP is useful to improve the performance of throughput and system delay characteristics regardless of the kinds of traffic.

Priority-based reservation protocol for variable-length messages in a WDM-based optical subscriber network (WDM 기반의 광 가입자 망에서 우선순위 기반의 효율적인 가변 길이 메시지 예약 프로토콜)

  • In a multi-channel network based of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, an efficient protocol is needed in order for the transmitter and receiver to be tuned to the same wavelength during message transmission time. This paper proposes a priority-based reservation protocol that can efficiently support variable-length messages that require different QoS requirements. In this proposed protocol, high-priority nodes can reserve the data channel before low-priority nodes. However, once a node reserves a data channel successfully, it can persistently use the reserved channel till message transmission is finished regardless of the priority of the node. Moreover, the protocol can operate independently of the number of nodes, and any new node can join the network anytime without requiring network re-initialization. The protocol is analyzed with a finite population model and the throughput-delay characteristics are investigated as performance measures.

Widely-tunable high-speed wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing in a semiconductor-fiber ring laser (고리형 반도체-광섬유 레이저에서 4광파 혼합에 의한 광대역 및 고속 파장 변환기)

  • We demonstrate a widely-tunable wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing in a semiconductor-fiber ring laser with no external pump light. Applying 10 GHz short pulses at -8 dBm as a probe signal, we achieve continuous wavelength tuning over the semiconductor optical amplifier gain-bandwidth reaching 30 nm down- and 17 m up-wavelength conversion. In addition to the wide tuning capability, the converter shows high-speed conversion and low saturation power capabilities.
