  • Unlike most aerodynamic wind-tunnel, Scramjet Engine Test Facility(SETF) of Korea Aerospace Research Institute should simulate enthalpy condition at a flight condition. SETF is a blow-down type, high-enthalpy wind tunnel. To attain a flight condition, a highly stagnated air comes into the test cell through a supersonic nozzle. Also, an air ejector of the SETF is used for simulating altitude conditions of the engine, and facility starting. SETF has a free-jet type test cell and this free-jet type test cell can simulate a boundary layer effect between an airplane and engine using facility nozzle, but it is too difficult to predict the nature of the facility. Therefore it is required to understand the starting characteristics of the facility by experiments. In this paper, the starting characteristics of the SETF and modifications of the ejector are described.

  • An experimental study was conducted on a subsonic wind tunnel to obtain aerodynamic coefficients for various situations in order to control the direction of a projectile. The angle of attack on the projectile was varied from $-5^{\circ}$ to $15^{\circ}$ and the roll angle of canard was changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$. The angle of attack on the canard was adjusted from $-20^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ and various inlet velocities were applied. Maximum Reynolds number based on the diameter of projectile was $5.5{\times}10^5$. The measured aerodynamic coefficients showed the same results for the various inlet velocities, and the highest effect on the canard was shown when the canard was set to the roll angle of $0^{\circ}$.

  • The wind responses of twin buildings are determined by the characteristics of wind loads and the dynamic characteristics of the structural systems of the buildings. In this study, the characteristics of wind pressure that influence wind responses were identified for two different spacings between the twin buildings using a wind tunnel test and the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method. Structural dynamic characteristics were also identified using 3D structural system modeling. The double modal transformation method was utilized to evaluate the characteristics of wind pressure for across-wind and along-wind conditions and the effect of the dynamic characteristics of each structure on the wind responses. The channeling and vortex effects were identified through the POD method. Across-wind loads were significantly affected by the spacings between the twin buildings, whereas along-wind loads were minimally affected. Similarly, while using the double modal transformation method, a significant difference was noticed in case of the cross-participation coefficients in the across-wind direction condition for the different spacings between the buildings; however, the along-wind direction condition showed negligible difference. Therefore, the spacing between the two buildings plays a more important role in across-wind responses compared to along-wind responses.

  • Prevention of exhaust gas back flow becomes a great interest to shipyards and shipowners in large container carriers because exhaust gas pollutes cargoes, flows back into the deck house and the engine room area through fresh air intakes and fan rooms, gives harmful damages to the crew's health and also gives thermal damages to electric equipments on the navigation deck. The phenomena of exhaust gas back flow has been studied with the analysis of sea trial records and wind tunnel tests and the height of the exhaust gas pipe, the front area of the deck house, the inflow speed and the position of the radar mast platform has been confirmed as the principal factors of exhaust gas back flow phenomena. The simple empirical formula to estimate exhaust gas back flow phenomena and the design guidances of exhaust gas related structures on deck has been introduced. In future, parametric studies for the exhaust gas back flow factors will be carried out with the CFD analysis. The results of this study will be the guide for development of the prevention method of exhaust gas back flow phenomena for large container carriers.

  • Experimental data are reported for charging and collection of NaCl aerosols in the 0.03- to $0.2{\mu}m$-geometric-mean-diameter range in 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitators. The NaCl aerosols are generated with geometric standard deviation of about 1.74 and particle generation rate of about 10^9 particles/see by the constant output atomizer and injected into the air flow in the clean wind-tunnel. The 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitator installed in the test section of the wind-tunnel is operated with a positive corona discharge. The NaCl aerosols in the channel flow are sampled and transported to the aerosol particle number concentration measurement system by using the isoaxial sampling and transport system constructed based on the Okazaki and Willeke design. The aerosol particle number concentration measurement system measures the size distribution of submicrometer aerosols by an electrical mobility detection technique. It is confirmed from comparing the measured collection efficiencies in this study and the predicted ones by our previous theoretical analysis that the predicted collection efficiencies agree well with the experimental ones. It is also found from the comparison that below about $0.02{\mu}m$ all particles are not charged and the uncharged particles are not collected, and consequently 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitators are not suitable for that particle size range.

  • This study was carried out to investigate reduction of the frost damage using the mesh net used for the purpose of non-bagged cultivation. A device measuring the weight of frost was developed and installed in both the control and the experimental, and the effect of frost reduction was evaluated with their weights. As a result, weight of frost in the control was reduced from 37% to 59% with mesh net on the day the frost was observed. In addition, the device for automatically observing the amount of frost was developed and the height of the windbreak of the frost measuring device was determined to be 30 cm through wind tunnel experiment. The results of this study are expected to reduce frost damage during the flowering season of fruit trees by installing mesh net and it is expected to be used as basic data for agricultural use of mesh net.

  • The contribution analysis of various external aeroacoustic noise sources to interior noise is important, enabling to design an automobile with a low interior noise level. With a new technique, the CD (Cholesky Decomposition), it is proposed to decompose an overall interior noise spectrum into multiple spectra, each representing the contribution of a specific noise source to the interior noise. In order to validate this method, three kinds of experiments were conducted. Furthermore, it is proposed to improve the CD-based contribution analysis method to be integrated with existing exterior microphone arrays in the wind tunnel. This method was validated with an experiment with two speakers.

  • Container cranes are vulnerable structure about difficult weather conditions bemuse there is no shielding facility to protect them from the strong wind. This study was carried out to analyze the wind load which have an effect on container crane according to the various wind direction. The container crane is a model of a 61-ton class that used broadly in the current ports. The external fluid field was figured as a cylinder which was set up $500m{\times}200m$. In this study, we applied mean wind load conformed to 'Design Criteria of Wind Load' in 'Load Criteria of Building Structures' and an external fluid field was divided as interval of 10 degrees to analyze effect according to a wind direction In this conditions, we carried out the computation fluid dynamic analysis using the CFX-10. As we compared computation fluid dynamic analysis with wind tunnel test, we analyzed the wind load which was needed to design the container crane.

  • A damage imposed on an unmanned aerial vehicle changes the flight dynamic characteristics, and makes difficult for a conventional controller based on undamaged dynamics to stabilize the vehicle with damage. This paper presents a neural network based adaptive control method that guarantees stable control performance for an unmanned aerial vehicle even with damage on the main wing. Additionally, Pseudo Control Hedging (PCH) is combined to prevent control performance degradation by actuator characteristics. Asymmetric dynamic equations for an aircraft are chosen to describe motions of a vehicle with damage. Aerodynamic data from wind tunnel test for an undamaged model and a damaged model are used for numerical validation of the proposed control method. The numerical simulation has shown that the proposed control method has robust control performance in the presence of wing damage.

  • In this study, forces and moments were measured on a projectile which consisted of a missile configuration body(shell) and a head installed control fins. The shell and the head were separated each other and the shell was rotated by an electric motor. The head rotated reversely against the rotational direction of the shell. The rotational force on the head was obtained from a couple of fixed fins of which angular displacement were set to the rotational direction equally. The air velocity was 40m/s on the experiment and the Reynolds number based on the diameter of head was $1.3{\times}10^5$. The other couple of fins were used to control the position and direction of the projectile by changing the angular displacement. From this experiment, the variation of force and moment were measured on the rotating projectile, and the effective amplitude and frequency were obtained through the FFT analysis.
