  • To predict the aerodynamic characteristics of the grid fins from subsonic to supersonic speeds, low fidelity SW as well as CFD SW were applied. VLM(Vortex Lattice Method) and SE(Shock-Expansion) method were used at subsonic and supersonic speed domain respectively for the rapid prediction of low fidelity SW. For 2 configurations of the grid fins, the CFD computations and tests using the trisonic wind tunnel were also performed to compare the results of the grid fins. The results of low fidelity SW, CFD SW and the wind tunnel tests data were agreed well each other. Through further research on the grid fins, the effective parameters of the grid fin configurations according to the speed regime will be investigated.

  • This experimental study investigated the effect of tip clearance and bypass flow on the cooling performance of a straight fin heat sink. Both the horizontal and vertical directions of the bypass flow were studied by using a mass flow controller and test sections. The thermal resistance of a heat sink was obtained to elucidate the response of the cooling performance to tip clearance and bypass flow. The thermal resistance of a straight fin heat sink gradually increases with increasing tip clearance. A flow guide unit was employed to reduce the bypass flow. An optimal distance from the leading edge of the heat sink to the flow guide unit was found for the fixed volume flow rate. The contribution of the flow guide unit to the thermal performance of a heat sink increases with increasing volume flow rate.

  • Polynomial response surface model has been widely used as approximation model which replace physical or numerical experiments in various engineering fields. Generally, low-order model is used to reduce experimental points required to construct the response surfaces, but this approach has limit to represent the highly non-linear phenomena. In this paper, we developed the method to expand modeling capabilities of polynomial response surfaces by increasing order of polynomial and selecting optimum polynomial basis functions. Genetic algorithm is used to choose optimal polynomial basis functions. Developed method was applied to analytic functions with 1 or 2 variables and wind tunnel test data modeling. The results show that this method is applicable to building response surface models for highly non-linear phenomena.

  • Aerodynamic property is the most important factor in designing the pneumatic separator and handling equipment for grains and seeds. Particularly the correct information about the terminal velocities of the corresponding grains and seeds is indispensible. However, a few studies with relation to the terminal velocities of grains and seeds were conducted in this country, even though the terminal velocities of the domestic grains and seeds are required to design those equiments which can be used for the domestic grains and seeds having specific aerodynamic properties. In this study, the terminal velocities for four varieties of varley and six varieties of paddy were investigated by means of two different methods, the suspension method and the drop method in an upward current of air. For measuring the terminal velocities, the vertical wind tunnel which had been examined about the uniform air flow in the previous study was used. In addition, the effect of the size of grains and the moisture content of grain kernel on the terminal velocity was examined. The following conclusions were derived from the study : 1. The different terminal velocities of grains are resulted from the different measuring methods. The terminal velocity measured by the drop method is smaller than that by the suspension method. It is considered that the difference in the terminal velocities is caused by the difference in the projection area of grain which is faced to the air stream. 2. The terminal velocity of grain increases as the size and the moisture content of the kernel increase. 3. The linear regression equations for the terminal velocities of grains were derived in terms of the moisture content of grains by the variety of grains and the measuring method. Also, the linear regression equations for the terminal velocity, based on the weighted size of grains, were derived in terms of the moisture contents of granis.

  • This study presents a result on aero-acoustic characteristics of pantograph panheads. To analyze the fluid flow around the panhead and resulting sound radiation, simple models of panhead were used in the numerical simulations called Lattice-Boltzmann method. The simulation results were verified using the wind tunnel test. The main aerodynamic noise was generated from the vortex shedding which is characterized by the Strouhal number, flow speed and geometry. The reduction in the radiated noise with simultaneously achieving increased lifting force was implemented for the simple rectangular geometry used in this study. Also, it was shown that the radiated sound power was significantly reduced by minimizing vortex shedding using through-holes or streamline shapes.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of wing-tail interference for a tail-controlled missile. The magnitude of wing-tail interference was calculated with wind tunnel test results and its effects on aerodynamic coefficients were investigated. The downwash angle of tail wing was calculated with experimental data and the effect of wing-tail interference was expressed as a ratio of angle of attack. Numerical simulations were made to examine flow characteristics of wing-tail interference and the vorticity contour of missile were compared with respect to angle of attack. Experimental and numerical analysis results show that the wing-tail interference has significant effects on static stability of tail-controlled missile.

  • This study investigates store separation characteristics of an unmanned aerial vehicle having generic stealth configuration over unsteady flow of an internal bay. Free-drop wind tunnel tests are conducted to simulate bomb releases from an internal weapons bay while high-speed camera images are taken. The images are analyzed to examine the effects of flow velocity, angle of attack, flap deflection and the ejector force application on the store separation trajectories. For the free-drop wind tunnel tests, Froude Scaling is applied to match the dynamic similarity for the bomb model, and the ejector force is simulated by using small pneumatic cylinders. The results indicate that the test bomb model safely separates from the internal bay at the given test conditions and configurations. It is also observed that the effects of the flow velocity and ejector force application have greater impacts on the separation trajectories than those of angle of attack and flap deflection.

  • The flow around a circular cylinder was controlled by attaching O-rings to reduce drag force acting on the cylinder. Four experimental models were tested in this study; one smooth cylinder of diameter D (D=60mm) and three cylinders fitted with O-rings of diameters d=0.0167 D, 0.05D and 0.067 D with pitches of PPD=2D, 1D, 0.5D and 0.25D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulence Intensity profiles in the near wake behind the cylinders were measured for Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter in the range of Re$_{D}$=7.8$\times$10$^3$~1.2$\times$10$^{5}$ . At Re$_{D}$=1.2$\times$10$^{5}$ , the cylinder fitted with O-rings of d=0.0167D in a pitch interval of 0.25D shows the maximum drag reduction of about 5.4%, compared that with the smooth cylinder. The drag reduction effect of O-rings of d=0.067D is not so high. For O-ring circulars, as the Reynolds number increases, the peak location of turbulence intensity shifts downstream and the peak magnitude is decreased. Flow field around the cylinders was visualized using a smoke-wire technique to see the flow structure qualitatively. The size of vortices and vortex formation region formed behind the O-ring cylinders are smaller, compared with the smooth cylinder.der.

  • This experimental study investigated the wake flow around an elastically supported circular cylinder. In this study, the Reynolds numbers are varied in the region of $1.4{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}3.2{\times}10^4$. Under these conditions, we have captured the process of the wake mechanism and the moving path of the vortex by measuring the velocity at each position in the wake around the cylinder. Further, these facts from the wind tunnel test are proved by a flow visualization test through a water channel. From the result, we have arrived at the following conclusions : i) The process (formation${\rightarrow}$growth${\rightarrow}$collapse) of vortex is observed in the wake around the cylinder, ii) The vortex efflux angle is approximately $16^{\circ}{\sim}17^{\circ}$ under the experimental conditions. These angles have no relationship with the velocity change and the existence of flow-induced vibrations of the cylinder, and iii) The moving path of the vortex center is obtained by spectrum analysis of the fluctuating velocity behind the cylinder. These are confirmed by conducting visualization tests.
