  • There is a need to develop diverse cultivation species with reference to the favorites and farming experiences of allotment garden participants, in addition to the crops being cultivated in the gardens. In this study, therefore, a survey on the status of cultivation and the demand for herb crops for the garden participants was conducted. Current trend of the programmes related to allotment garden for city dwellers, executed by various relevant organizations was analyzed. A questionnaire was accomplished by adult participants experiencing farming in allotments. Likewise, interview with farm proprietors was conducted. The results showed that the number of crop species cultivated in allotments was about ten species. The purchase of seeds and nursery plants was mainly dependent on the farmland proprietors. The selection of the crops was made by both wife and husband. The status of herb utilization indicated that 5.7% of participants were cultivating or had cultivated herb plants. Sixty-two percent of participants were not cultivating herb plants because they did not know how. The purposes of using herbs were for medicine and beauty (22.0%), for spices (22.0%) and for enjoyment (29.0%). Thirty-four percent (34.0%) of participants were interested or would like to use the herbs in the future for medicine and beauty, 39.0% for spices and 31.7% for enjoyment. It is expected that the demand for herbs would increase. Also, 78.3% of participants had the intension or had taken into consideration to cultivate the herb plants, if the farmland proprietors would provide the plants. And, they had interest in planting, management and post harvest utilization and if a reference material would be provided as well. An approach to plant new crops might be possible to those who have more than four years of farming experience and possess relatively high level of cultivation techniques. In conclusion, the favorable crop cultivation strategy corresponding to the participants' abilities; and rental process were essential for the sustainable operation of allotment gardens and expanded number of participants. Moreover, there is a need to pay attention to the city dwellers who have a lot of farming experiences in allotment gardens to maintain agriculture and rural community. This is so, because they are interested in agriculture and rural community and most of them replied that they had intentions to move to rural areas in the future.

  • Objectives: Farmers are known to be exposed to a variety of allergens related to the work environment. This study was conducted to determine the sensitization rates as well as South Korea that they are sensitized to certain allergens farmers through the skin prick test. Methods: By targeting a total of 1143 people living in the rural town of Gyeonggi Province, it was conducted a questionnaire containing demographic and occupational risk factors and underwent skin prick tests with 15 types of allergens(including positive and negative controls). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between occupational risk factors and skin prick test positivity. Results: Except for the 30 people whose result is invalid, positive rate of the skin prick test was 18.6% in 1,113 people. The species of house dust mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae was the highest at 8.7% and 8.6%. After adjusted by age, gender, smoking and education level, odds ratio of flower plant farmers is 4.467(95% CI: 2.094-9.527) and fruit farmer is 2.275(95% CI: 1.096-4.721). In addition, the rate of sensitization to grass pollen mixture of the flower plant farmers is significantly higher(15.9%, p<0.001) than other allergens. Conclusions: Even farmers, the rate of sensitization to allergens related to the general environment, such as house dust mite is relatively dominant. However, given the presence of potential cross-reactivity between the allergens or distribution showed that the unique aspects of allergen sensitization in the flower growers, occupational cause is not be completely ruled out.

  • In this research, we performed a SWOT analysis to analyze the feasibility of cultivating tropical fruits in Korea, using the mango as a case study. The opportunities for domestic tropical fruit (mango) cultivation are that the domestic cultivation environment is improving due to global warming, the consumer market is expanding due to the increase in domestic demand, and some local governments are supporting the cultivation of tropical fruits as a new high-income crop. The strengths are that it is possible to produce high quality fresh fruits in Korea and that they are still distributed in small quantities, so they can be differentiated from imported ones. There are regular customers and the mango is recognized as a medicinally functional fruit. The threats are that the price competitiveness of imported goods is likely to be further strengthened due to the implementation of the FTA and that it is difficult to cope with the unpredictable climate changes, such as heavy snowfall and extremely cold weather. The weak points are that the initial investment cost is high, the operating costs such as heating bills are also very high, and there is no supply system for the chemicals, fertilizers and cultivation technology required for tropical fruits. In order for tropical fruits such as mangoes to become major fruits, we must make full use of these strengths and opportunities while, at the same time, complementing the weaknesses and eliminating the threats in the value chain.

  • The aim of this paper is to explore the role played by the endogenous farming organization sustaining rural community's competitiveness. Nulmi-Ri, Chungdo Kun in Kyongsangbuk-do chosen as a case study area is known to be one of the most competitive rural communities, making a living with a peach farming. This community maintains its competi- tiveness by operating a community-based filming organization which was organised in an endogenous way. Most of individual farmers in this community belong to the farming organization and they have cooperative relationships in the processes of production and distribution. In this respect, the exchange and circulation of knowledge, and collective learning, tend to be significantly taken place between the organization members. Based on the experience of the Nulmi-Ri's endogenous farming organization, we propose some constructive comments for rural community development.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical characteristics and biological activities of water and 30%, 50%, 70%, 100% ethanol extracts from Artemisia Argyi H. and fermented Artemisia Argyi H. The yield was the highest in the 30% ethanol extract with Argyi H. at 29.74%. Total phenol and flavonoid contents were the highest in 70% ethanol extract with Argyi H. at 72.25 mg/g and 33.34 mg/g, respectively. The antioxidant activities of all extracts were significantly increased in a dose dependent manner. The 70% ethanol extract from Argyi H. show the highest level of DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity and bleaching inhibition activity in ${\beta}$-carotene linoleic acid system. Tyrosinase inhibition activity was also higher in the 70% ethanol extract, and the lowest in the 100% ethanol extract with Argyi H. at 50.01% and 11.44% at $500{\mu}g/ml$ concentration, respectively. At $250{\mu}g/ml$ concentration, the xanthin oxidase inhibition activity of water extract was more than 60%, and it was higher than the extracts. These results suggest that the 70% ethanol extract of Artemisia Argyi H. has a high rate of biological activities and can be useful to develop functional food ingredients.

  • The National Center for AgroMeteorology (NCAM) has designed a risk management solution for individual farms threatened by the climate change and variability. The new service produces weather risk indices tailored to the crop species and phenology by using site-specific weather forecasts and analysis derived from digital products of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). If the risk is high enough to cause any damage to the crops, agrometeorological warnings or watches are delivered to the growers' cellular phones with relevant countermeasures to help protect their crops against the potential damage. Core techniques such as scaling down of weather data to individual farm level and the crop specific risk assessment for operational service were developed and integrated into a cloud based service system. The system was employed and implemented in a rural catchment of 50 $km^2$ with diverse agricultural activities and 230 volunteer farmers are participating in this project to get the user-specific weather information from and to feed their evaluations back to NCAM. The experience obtained through this project will be useful in planning and developing the nation-wide early warning service in agricultural sector exposed to the climate and weather extremes under climate change and climate variability.
